I tweeted about this in May 10, 2019, in reply to a tweet that's now deleted. This story couldn't have been true. Here is what I posted: "This would be terrible if true. But, these stories by players years later are often exaggerated, or completely made up. Per Retrosheet.org, Joe West was behind the plate for only one Mets-Phillies game in 2006-2007. Wagner didn't pitch and the Mets lost. Assuming Lo Duca misremembered the opponent, West was behind the plate for only three Mets games against other teams in 2006-2007 where Wagner pitched, and only one was in New York (as implied in the story). He finished that game, but gave up one hit and struck out one. In the other two (in Atlanta and Florida), the Mets had a nice lead (not a tight game), and Wagner gave up home runs in both those appearances. It has to be 2006-2007, the only two years Lo Duca and Wagner were on the team together. Giving Lo Duca the most benefit of the doubt, we can assume this was spring training, since the Phillies and Mets both work out in Florida. In which case, horsing around with the strike zone wouldn't be as bad, but still not appropriate or ethical." So, good for Joe, clearing his name, now two years later. And good on you for picking up this story!

Actually, they get paid pretty well. Starting salary is $150,000 and the top of the range is about $450,000. And it's not like getting into the HOF is a lock for an umpire-there have only been 10 in Cooperstown, and most of them haven't gotten in until after they'd died.

It was funny at the end when Jomboy gave Billy Wagner's stats with Joe West behind the plate and the other commentator said, "not bad". I took an elementary statistics course. I did a hypothesis test asking is Billy Wagners stats significantly better with Joe West behind the plate. According to Jomboy 12 and 2/3 innings with 21 K's with West behind the plate. According to Baseball Reference dot com, Wagners career stats 903 IP 1196 K's. Without going through the gory details it does turn out that given the 12 and 2/3 inning sample that Wagners stats are significantly better with West behind the plate. Anybody else would like to try. I used alpha= .01 Null Hypohesis= .44 (Wagner struck out 44% of the batters he got out) Alternative Hypothesis > .44 p(hat)= .55 (Wagner struck out 55% of the batters he got out with West behind the plate.)
