Malcolm Gladwell speaks at Miami Herbert Business School's Real Estate Impact Conference

Malcolm Gladwell is the author of five New York Times best-selling books, "The Golden Gate Bridge and Beyond: The Moral Implications of Place". Gladwell discusses psychological and sociological implications of buildings, streets and neighborhoods during the University of Miami Real Estate Impact Conference on Friday, February 8, 2019. Previewing some ideas from his forthcoming book, Gladwell addresses the importance of place in driving decision making and suggests we shouldn’t assume nudges that aim to separate people from doing things in places they are comfortable will work easily.

From Malcolm Gladwell's Keynote: What did they discover? They discovered, as you can imagine, that the kids who had been sent to do art appreciation were vastly better diagnosticians than their peers who had instead spend all that time in a med school. What that tells us is that, as the kind of problems that professionals are facing grow more complex, and the task of an ophthalmologist today is even more complex than it was a generation ago. You're asking questions and answering questions that never occurred to the generation or two that came before you. As these problems grow more complex, the benefits of interdisciplinary preparation become greater.
And so, I think that when we think about, when we work backwards from these kinds of observations, what we need to be saying is, that if someone is to be a truly effective developer or architect or do anything in these professions, they need to have a broader perspective on society. They need to have people who have thought about and been trained in the humanities and have read literature and history and have just some other, something that they can bring to their profession from the broader world that prepares them for these kinds of much more complex and consequential questions. Malcolm is correct; our knowledge of architecture and the human mind is in its infancy, and more studies should be done. The bridge between universities and the commercial world needs to be widened. It would be great to understand why one-way streets and other quirky factors (like lighting) contribute to negative human behavior.

I love Malcolm’s attire. Long gone are the days of suit and tie. Anyone listens to the four people who have something to say that no one want to hear before Gladwell comes on stage ? I imagine the audience is looking at their phone until Gladwell is on.

Buildings do indeed have a "feel". And I react to them based on how it makes me feel, especially if the feel of the building doesn't match what it's being used for. It makes me so uncomfortable that I've got to get out of there.

I design buildings and by extension dip into city planning, you can tell when a city has a cohesive feel and when it’s built with intention vs new buildings cropping up in different eras with a stunted feel

My wife is a psychiatrist and she has worked with people who attempted suicide. She told me that nearly all of them had repated the SAME METHOD. Obviously, a person who has once chosen a bridge will most likely try another bridge, rather than shooting themselves. Forms of suicide are very "individual", and it would appear that if you are discouraged from jumping you are not going to shoot yourself.

There seems to be certain areas in each city where predators of children (pehophiles) prefer to live also. I was very surprised to find a rather large mass of convicted child predators living within a 6 block radius in Toronto, which was discovered when "Emanuel" the shoe shine boy was killed. This type of crime, being the most horrible crime should be included in further studies.

Excellent point. Look at the Catholic priests of Boston. If you’re a married Episcopal priest and convert, you can continue sleeping with your wife. But if you deny human beings an outlet for innate sexuality going in, you don’t turn men into pedophiles, you attract the wrong kind of man to that “place.”

Given the results of these studies showing how 3.4% of a city's streets account for over 50% of crimes, how many municipalities have modified their policing tactics accordingly and what have the results been? I wonder if Malcolm addresses this question in his book.

There has to be counter statistics that speak against his conclusions. It feels very selective. I would like to see statistics over a longer period of time than what Malcolm is speaking to.
