UN peacekeeping: Challenges mount in Africa

Monday marks the 75th anniversary of United Nations peacekeeping operations. Last year, at least 32 peacekeepers, known as blue helmets, were killed in targeted attacks.

Most killings occurred in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mali.

UN peacekeeping is only highly successful when the warring factions genuinely want lasting peace in the region, being tired from years of instability (Namibia 89-90, Cambodia 92-93, El Salvador 91-95, Croatia 96-98, Burundi 04-06, Cote d'Ivoire 04-17). And then there's places like Somalia, Mali, and Sudan where at least one of the warring factions is just a bunch of religious fanatics who are willing to go full jihad to the last man, woman, and child rather than settle for peace. These are places where the Blue Helmets are just punching bags and they can't possibly stop the violence.

Africa is in the process of forming its own army. Soon we will deal with these issues. In the meantime we pray for peace.

Huh? Crumbling in what way? Stop being misled by sensationalist propaganda….. The reality is the West is losing its power in Africa, and will continue to. They will never admit it to the general masses of their citizens… The only thing that is lacking in this regards is that there is no philosophical cohesion amongst Africans as to how Africa is to move forward…..many of this, imo, is due to misinformation agents that have crawled out of the woodworks in the past years to lie about African history and current affairs

No, it does not need India per se. But I do support India becoming the 6th permanent member. But no other countries. The UNSC must be about reality not nice feelings of equity.

Why cant African union takeover peace keeping in Africa? Africa is a huge continent. It is Africans who can bring peace in Africa. We saw it in Sera Leone 🇸🇱 and Liberia 🇱🇷. At least the ecowas managed to bring peace .
