As a 47-year motorcycle rider, I've seen the attention of drivers diminish a little bit more and more every year. Even though driving with cell phone in hand is illegal in my state, I see it every day. The built-in "infotainment center" in today's cars are nothing but a "dashboard distraction center"! Drivers are doing everything but paying attention to their driving. Motorcycle riders are at the bottom of the food chain, so were hypervigilant about watching out for distracted drivers. I've gone so far as to install 50-year-old twin-horns out of an old Buick I found in the junkyard onto my motorcycle. Drivers didn't even notice the little "fweep-fweep" horn the motorcycle came with, but those old Buick horns get their attention every time! It was well worth the extra wiring it took to install them.

Hi Hubnut. Your repair was a good result, given how terrible the 'before' looked. Well done! Re glueing broken headlight mounting tabs, here's a couple of my tricks. Sometimes I drill a hole into each piece of plastic, and put a metal pin (cut down 2" nail usually) in for strength. Secondly, to strengthen the join from the outside, I glue a piece of aluminium flashing to the area of the join .Epoxy glue takes well to the plastic and to the aluminium if both are well roughed up, and the flashing is thin enough to be pressed into the shape to confirm to it.

Admirable how quickly you guys got that sorted out and back on the road again. Normally that'd be rageSORN > park up and declare it a project > buy something else to replace it while it's parked awaiting work > lose keys > work on it two years later > find other issues along the way > declare it a 'rebuild' not a repair > start video series > get three vids in and buy another car > sell first replacement car > forget you owned this car > buy Skyline engine to mount in the back > sell Skyline engine & put car back together in a 'temporary' repaired state cos you need to move it > 2nd replacement car breaks > throw Charade back into service with mend & make-do repair > lose keys to 2nd replacement car > continue to use Charade, still sporting damage > scrap 2nd replacement car > Charade fails MoT on rust > back to Whitelands > cycle begins again.

It's not quite the same as your bash, but this reminded me of when an elderly lady drove into my then 'pride and joy' on a country road many years back (just a slow collision denting each of our car's wings, nobody hurt). I was more worried about her than the car. She was in tears as she was so shaken by it, so it was far more important to calm her down, make sure that she was alright and reassure here that it was just a thing that happens, I wasn't angry, the insurers would sort it out, no-one was hurt. People can be very fragile in such situations, especially the elderly. We tend to forget about people suffering from shock. Getting cross helps no-one in such situations. Be kind.

my old man had similar just got a new car and then driving around the godalmin area of Surrey, down a hilly and twisty road and the old lady drove straight into the front of the car being an escort eclipse had all bells and whistles, but less crumply then new cars. Fun side of things is that the insurance sorted out the body work, but not identified after getting it back and happened to be near the regular mechanics in Woking, the pistons let go on the engine at low speed thanks, turned out the impact had knock the block off its mounts too and had been missed, so new engine required. Reason that old drivers who don't regularly drive and clear to the point of danger should not be on the road. But, can see why the fear and frustration when this happens.

Having suffered a similar bump from a BMW to the rear bumper of my old MK2 Mondeo, I can say that BMW paint work is rubbish. When I first looked at the damage to the back of my car I thought the paint on my bumper had been taken completely off and it was down to the plastic. But I soon realised that what i was looking at was the paint that had come off of the BMW, once I had removed that there was hardly a scratch on the clear coat of my car. So I was not surprised to see Chemmy's bumper polish up so well. And she looks so much smarter with the headlights polished. (said he thinking back to the days when headlights were made of glass and did not need to be polished).

Years ago we had a scruffy 850 Mini City, coming back to it after work one day there was a chap trying to wedge a tiny piece of paper into the drivers window rubber. Goodness only knows why he didn't tuck it under the wiper. He had just smacked into the osf with his big Mercedes. I was enraged, because it was the only car we could afford at the time, and it was bright orange! I had a go at doing my headlights on our mk2 CR-V. Imagine 20 years of grime and washer liquid drying on a warm headlight. I had to wet sand by hand for the 60, 80 and 100 grit and finished off using a B&D Mouse sander for the finer grit (800 - 2000) and it got rid of almost every scratch and flaw. I must add I did buy a cheap replacement headlight off eBay (£20) to test it out first before trying it on my cars headlights. Fairly proud of myself for trying it.

Reinforcing plastic glued joints Ian - If you place a small washer flat across the glued joint and apply a soldering iron with a flat tip (those circular tips in iron kits that are probably for burning patterns in leather art and no one ever uses) gently to the surface of the washer, it will heat the washer and let it melt it into the plastic, providing a strong splint > repeat as necessary.👍

Increases the surface area for bonding by an order of magnitude, and takes the majority of the stress off the original break. Never had one I've repaired this way break again, except in another crash.
