Regarding the history of martin houses, this video could be insightful: Bring Birds Back: The Past, Present, and Future of Purple Martins In particular, a noteworthy fact I have found is that despite popular belief, martins are not effective at controlling mosquitoes, and the original martin gourds were more likely set up to keep meat free of flesh flies.

My brother has lots of bird houses…mostly for Western Bluebirds, but he also has a high narrow contraption for Purple Martins. PUMA is one of the three life birds I’ve had since moving to Mendocino County.

It's so nice that people are willing to selflessly make homes for birds. Such a cool thing to exist in the world, and really nice that your brother is helping birds. By any chance, is PUMA a Purple Martin? It's fun to imagine a tall spire in a backyard that houses dozens of pumas. :)

@@BioBush Yep…PUMA is PUrple MArtin. All North American birds have a four-letter abbreviation that generally consists of (1) the first four letters of the bird’s name if it has a single name (Bufflehead = BUFF), the first two letters if it’s bi-nomial, which most are (Fox Sparrow = FOSP), and generally 1/1/2 for hyphenated names (White-crowned Sparrow = WCSP). I often shorten many of my regular birds (California Quail = CQ, CR = Common Raven, the default bird of my town) since my lists aren’t read by anyone but me.

@@maryrosekent8223 What do they do if there's a collision between two birds? I can't think of an example where both are in North America, but Common Grackle and Common Greenshank would both be COGR. I have been considering doing a similar project for every bird in the world, so it's interesting to learn that someone has already solved some of the problems.

@@BioBush They adapt; there was this exact situation when Cackling Goose was split off from Canada Goose, so Cackling became CAGO and Canada became CANG.
