The DayZ mod was the sole reason i started gaming on pc. I'll never forget seeing the trailer for DayZ for the first time back in 2012, i immediately went on craigslist and found a gaming pc for sale by some broke college kid, i haggled him down to 500 bucks and went to get it. Came home and played the mod for like 18 hours straight. Went on to co-found a DayZ RP community with some cool peoples. Easily top 3 gaming experiences for me.

Never in decades of playing video games has a game made me *feel* the death of a teammate more than DayZ. You can spend hours with someone you've only just met, become relatively close with them and come to appreciate their personality only for them to get killed before your very eyes in an instant. And (unless you're in discord which is just... BOOO) that's that; that friend/teammate is GONE. They're not coming back, they're as dead as it gets in a game. Their loss is real. That, along with the agency the game provides players in developing and telling a story, truly does make it the greatest game I've ever watched or played, and that's no hyperbole. Thanks for the awesomely informative video man. Never knew Dean's story until now. Great work, great watch!

Started playing DayZ when it dropped. No traders, minimal vehicles and the farthest place north was the NEAF. I quit for about three years then a friend told me I needed to come back and see what had been done to the game. I didn't recognize the map. Bigger cities and towns. More opened buildings. Tons of new places to loot, and hunt other players. Been back to playing for about four months now and I am enjoying it again. But I do miss the fun I had and players I met back when DayZ was still a baby.

you must Be new to DayZ , DayZ has a lot of hate with the original player who got in on early access this game has struggled ! for all the reasons you have stated. The Dev team didnt know what the were getting them self into and they kept adding feature which kept breaking the game. At one point they had to remove a lot of stuff and start over. Things got better though game is super fun and still a long way from being done if Bohemia sees DayZ through 100% . I love the fact you brought up the commitment of the Devs. they have worked really hard and its good to see someone talk about it. the game paved way for others to realize their own survival game dream. I have been playing DayZ SA late 2012 as that when early access began but i think it was labeled SA in 2013 as it was just DayZ back in 2012. so much has changed and i stream DayZ from time to time.

I haven't played DayZ for years, but some of my most vivid gaming memories come from this game. The strange thing with it is that despite not being anything like an RPG, it was the purest role-playing experience I've ever had in a video game. There was just something about it that drew you into its world. Every exchange I had with other players felt like we were all in character all the time. That changed a bit as it became more popular, but even then it still provided the most tense and realistic feeling zombie apocalypse experience I've ever had.

Met a bunch of new friends that we still talk to and play games with today. OG mod is easily one of my top 5 favorite games ever and it's awesome that it's still going strong on the stand-alone so long later. SOOO much crazy content has been made in the game as well from youtubers. Crazy that it all came from 1 guy, Dean 'Rocket' Hall, making a mod for a Military Simulator that only had like 25,000 players before he made DayZ; and then had millions of copies sold a few months later all from people wanting to play his mod.

The 1st toxic online gaming community in history of gaming... that I can remember being pointless and irrelevant. So congrats of reminding me of the same... Just when you think years has past and finally it's thing of a past, an idiotic video fueled by delusions like this pops up and spreads lies and reminds me of this garbage community in general. I had my fun with Arma2 DayZ mods but only with selected people on local servers that we had control over. On top of that Arma2 is garbage anyway so it's not like we could be stuck on it for long. Today garbage is called gaming and lots of idiots online being the majority of the community renders gaming irrelevant. SO congrats for killing gaming and being the start of the end and the actual and end of it too... and even the word idiots is way too generous.

I remember when I first started eith Dayz Mod. I used keep hearing how the game was a social experiment. Milgram style. It was always a curious anecdote to the game as the choices you make to survive, sort of went on the wey side, you know? When it was heroes vs bandits. Now, I feel that is sort of lost as pvping is less about survival and more about what you can take from others. Its speaks to society as a whole. Its ab amazing game and experience. DayZ 4Life.

Though its been awhile since i sat down and played, I absolutely love DayZ. The environment and especially the adventures and peril you can go on with random strangers and the stories that come about are what I love most about it! A short story if one has time about why DayZ holds a place in gaming for me, and why even with risk meeting others in the game is the FUN of it. I used to always lone wolf in game do to fear of others. Nothing like spending hours days and weeks on character only for it to get snuffed out in a second, thats actually gets the adrenaline going. Playing on one server late one night just one other guy and myself online chatting in the in game text chat. I'm scavenging around Electro and he somewhere up near NEAF just chill conversation amongst ourselves. In-game sneaking from building to building avoiding zombies in pitch black (well as dark as the mod was at night) get a message from him asking if I could bloodbag him as he was near death. Nervous it was a trap but respond "Sure why not, however I'm nowhere near you" He says "no prob just camp the roof of the hospital in Electro and he'll be there in a minute." Puzzled how he was going to be there so quick but i do while also being worried about being trolled and sniped from the nearby hill. Couple minutes later on top the hospital only the sounds of the night and zombies... when a distant drone of an engine comes in. Louder then LOUDER till the An-2 Biplane he is flying goes right over top of me and lands in the field by the power plant. We meetup and and I give the transfusion. Bro ask me if want to team up and look for heli crashes in the plane. We run through night time Electro dodging zombies looting last minute food and supplies. We come upon the field where the plane is. The planes lights illuminated the night and the field a horror. The plane and the engine noises attracted damn near every zombies and was surrounded by them. We dodge and weave through the horde and take flight. Rest of the time of flying through night Chernarus. Two dudes chatting and joking in the aircraft, I'm playing some music through the vehicles ingame radio for us to jam to while scanning pitch black fields and forest everyonce in awhile see the tell tale glow of the our prized Heli Crash sites we are hunting for. Eventually we part ways and log off. Unfortunately we didnt add each other in Steam so who knows whats happened to each other. Thanks for reading my blog lol, but encounters like this is why DayZ is fun to me. 🙂

DayZ is the forefather of all the survival games that followed. That's why they were dubbed "DayZ clones" (H1Z1, Scum, Miscreated, and tons of others). Some of them have survived, others have not. Even Player Unknown (the creator of PUBG) used to be a modder for DayZ.

He didn't changed anything. Plus the mod isn't even his. He just miked the bare minimum idea of it, to literal death. The mod was made by some kids even just to put it into perspective how the so called devs were incompetent in comparison to someone who was a paid employee. We had ''DayZ'' before DayZ was even a thing ... talking 1st days of Arma2 and before that the zombie survival mod already existed in Arma1 and plenty of other games too either were out of the box this or mods been made for certain games, there are too many to mention here and I wont even bother to waste time stating the obvious. People should know better by now. Also the actual later DayZ mods of Arma2 made by the community changed the game and survival sandbox gaming forever. Rocket is a scammer and pathetic individual who have nothing legit on him. We back then had mods of games that years later some even almost decade later tried to cash in on it the 1st time and declared how its' a innovation of sorts which is pathetic. DayZ standalone or wtf is called today is same pointless unplayable mess as it was 10 years ago just with ''prettier'' (different) graphics. It's a pathetic cashgrab and everything this guy is attached to is just a scam. So time to taste reality and stop spreading lies and delusions that Rocket and his so called developers did something, or some corporation did something 1st ... Things like DBD, PubG and other today ''popular'' garbage started decade plus ago as silly stupid mods, today these halfbaked and overall pointless garbage is magically labeled as a game and completely overhyped which is pathetic as it can get. Case and point that people today don't even know wtf a game is nor who made what originally... But sure enough act like experts on everything and all driven by delusions too.

Original DayZ standalone dev here. Dean already worked with Bohemia Interactive when he started working on the MOD, it just took about a year before he reached agreement with the CEO of Bohemia interactive and then on the standalone we struggled with the very old SDK of Arma which wasnt ready for this and while we tried to make the game on the old SDK, we also slowly moved everything over to a new in house SDK which was not easy and was very long process. DayZ SA didn't really hold to me as well as the mod. The mod was something different it was sucked you in and made you want to play for hours and hours. DayZ SA doesn't do it liek the mod, I really wish there were more servers for the mod. The mod was fairly popular years after the SA release. All good things must come to an end right. God bless Dean Hall for the creation of DayZ mod and the countless hours I spent playing and watching.

As someone who loved DayZ mod, DayZSA in its current state is the best its ever been thanks to the modding community. I highly recommend giving it another shot if interested!

The mod back in the days was incredibly fun and i am so glad that i could experience the high times of the mods - especially DayZ Origins captivated me so much back in the days. I came back to DayZ in November again and since then it did not lose a grip on me.

As someone who first stumbled on dayz back when it was a mod cause of youtubers like FrankieOnPC, TheRunningManZ, etc this video definitely got me thinking of getting back into playing. Some of my most memorable experiences on video games came from dayz including some of my closest friends, Great vid.

You have me so addicted to DayZ! I very much enjoy your content along with Nezars. 2 completely different channels/content but share the same passion for the game. You are not assholes but don’t take shit from anyone. Very well balanced. I tried playing on Xbox to get a taste of the what the game has to offer but I’m dead within minutes every… freaking time… no so much other players but zombies. Anyway, Love the content and look forward to the content to follow. I think I caught up on every dayz video to date. I binge watched for weeks. Cheers

Pro tip, dont shoot zombies. You eill attract every other zombie in town. If you get swarmed, jump on top of a wall, car, bus shelter, etc, and use a melee weapon to kill them
@ConMan1504 Жыл бұрын
I would like to clsrify, zombies cant climb. They can vault, but they cant actually stay atop one of those objects. Still, stealth is the best option. Also beware zombies will hear when you use the in game voip

This is probably the only game where you can have an amazing story that somehow sounds believable. The more hours you have the more stories you gather, then there is community... and DayZ community is... well... it's DayZ community, something that will surprise you even if you have like 10K hours within the game and you've been around since mod times
@Zakkerman Жыл бұрын
I my played for about 3 hours yet I get exactly what you mean. I was kidnapped and sold then trained then freed then killed by zombies.

Surprised you didn't mention that PuBG was a mod made as an addon to the original DayZ mod. DayZ and Dean Hall are the inspiration for every survival shooter on the market in the last decade.

Nice vid. You are right that Rocket's mod created a game that devs would never have dreamed of making and it would be up there with my best all time gaming experiences. I would not be so glowing about the development of the standalone game though. It took way too long and was not in a very playable state for most of that time.

I do wonder, throughout the standalone game’s development did they ever considered reaching out to the guys behind the ACE mod of Arma, since ACE had a lot of advance interactions that could’ve been used, ACE is still is one of the most recommended mods in Arma that makes the game feel more realistic and is customizable to fit a player or servers balance

I just recently got into this game but I've had it for years.. I am addicted and love it.. though its challenging... I made my first trip 15min run to the nearest tier 1 military camp, sadly no good assault rifles or anything but I did find a silencer for pistol, Colt 45 and camo gear... I plan to equipped or carry Bio Chem gear and go deeper or to another, maybe try to build a car.. That is if I can stop from being raided every other day... I love it...

Until this day, it is unique in many ways. Though this is a very high level summary of what has happened. I think it is worth mentioning, that because they sold so many copies, suddenly a lousy 30 million euro's came into play. That's when Bohemia started to become increasingly involved with management. Though its creator was hired as project lead, he was also developing and not great, focussing on adding new dynamics like cooking. Which was not what Bohemia wanted. Having issues with an outdated graphic engine and spawning economy of loot items, they decided they needed a new engine. So the money earned from sales, basically was used to get rid of Dean and rebuilding the game. However, building an engine is not easy. So they lost a huge amount of the OG players, who where drawn in by the immersive survival experience. Looking at what DayZ has become, I call it 'An old Battlefield game, with a sneeze'. Instead of bringing back the original survival PvE, exploring to crafting and cooking, they only add weapons and ammunition to encourage PvP. Which doesn't make it fun, because the engine is too buggy for quick FPS combat. Creating stronger PvE dynamics would encourage people to work together. Sadly basebuilding has no other point than getting raided. Which is only a matter of time. It was supposed to be way to wait out storms and rain, basically hide some stash and build a few hidden shelters to hide out untill coast was clear or weather conditions cleared. My final episode ended when my buddy barely got into the fire, but burned and bleeded to death within seconds before my eyes. Years later I started again, got spawned in the rain, and died of sickness in a empty town with absolutely NO LOOT at all, within 10 minutes. I hate it that I loved it so much, and its gone.

You failed to mention that Dean Hall didn't hang around to see his project completed, he collected his money and left the project in Brian's hands. Who a while later also left the project incomplete. Dayz is not still alive today because of the Developers hard work, it's alive today because of the modding community.
@Zakkerman Жыл бұрын
I didn’t know that. Thanks for the information.

Brian Hicks was the Creative Director and by the time he left there was not much for him to do on the project, as the creative direction was set in stone. They way you phrased it sounds he just abandoned ship, which is not the case. Also, while the game's popularity due to the modding community is true. Saying it would be dead without it is kinda far-fetched. Besides, the devs made an excellent environment for modders to work in, with also continues support for the modding community.

I wouldn’t say it’s only the modding community, I only play vanilla servers and they are steadily updating it and making it smoother and better.

@@Zakkerman what @autobahn performance shared is disingenuous to say the least. Dean left the project because he basically had to. His travel visa to Prague was expiring and could not be renewed any more times. He would have had to apply for a resident permit. Plus Dean had been away from his family (who were still in NZ) for years and living in Prague to work on the game. The guy was just tired and wanted to go home and be with his family. So, circumstances being what they were, he negotiated a severance package to compensate him for his IP, left Bohemia and handed the project off to Brian Hicks. Of course though the conspiracy theorists elected to view it as a cash grab on Dean's part and have always held it against him. Personally though, I've traveled for work often. I know what being homesick is like. Let alone having a family at home who's also missing you over several years. He took a severance package and went home. Pure and simple. Did that ultimately have a detrimental effect on DayZ development? I think it would be hard to argue otherwise. Even so, anyone with a shred of empathy wouldn't be able to hold it against Dean for doing what he did. Family, as well as your own physical and mental health, should always come first above your work. All that said, DayZ Standalone is still a long ways off from the original vision from the mod. And honestly I doubt we'll ever see it get there with Bohemia at the helm in terms of official content. It's true that the modding community has gone to great lengths to fill in the gaps left by Bohemia Interactive, and they've done a fantastic job. There's tons of killer mods out that really help take DayZ to the next level.
