I just started following the deer breeding industry and my question is this. Why did the buck with the damaged antler, have to have the entire antlers removed?

Take the stress off. They are still filled with many large blood vessels until the antler fully hardens. If he's already ran down, it makes him more prone to infection. If they cut them off, they're able to sterlize and doctor him up. Give antibiotics that will help ward off infection while the new wound heals
