Old guys like me want to own the cars they dreamed of when they were younger. It's not about speed and being the best, It's about the experience. I giggle like a schoolgirl every time I drive my 996 GT3. Every GT3 generation has the special sauce but the 996 gt3 series are as close to a cup car as you can get for the street. Very raw machines that love to be driven hard. I used to own a 996 c2 which was also a great car but very different. I also own a GT4 but honestly much prefer the 6-gt3 because it's just more fun.

As an owner of a 996.2 GT3 Clubsport I am a bit in it. So what you have here is the 996,1 GT3 withe 360 PS. The next gen had 381 PS. Although like Andreas Preuninger says, the 1. gen often were a bit shy of 360 where the later gen was very much between 395 and 410. It was just politics to be lower then the turbo. So they say the 996.2 was quicker not only a margin. Anyway that car is such a joy to drive, everything is so crisp raw and you can rev it to 8200 - which makes a phantastic sound. Only thing is, that the front is sneaking very close to the ground.

996’s are great cars. I’ve had a 3.4, 3.6 4s and now a turbo. The 4s was slightly underwhelming but incredibly pretty. The 3.4 was perfection to drive but not look at. I’ve had the turbo for years and it has been superb and completely reliable.

I have a 3.4 and a 3.6 and couldn't agree more that the 3.4 996.1 C2 is perfection to drive. It's a daily driver with the most smiles per gallon. And personally, I LOVE the looks. Mine is an early build (3/98) with amber lenses. 24 years later the look is pure modern classic in my eyes. Plus the early built 996s were hand assembled along with the outgoing 993 gen on the same line so they are tanks. No squeaks or rattles. And mine still smells like the beautiful Connolly leather that was still used at that time. Get a well-sorted early build 996 C2 with a cable throttle and you'll never regret it.
@hugohugo28322 жыл бұрын
@@pshame4466 yes I agree. Build quality is better. I didn’t like the looks at the time (over 15 years ago) but it’s aged well so I swapped for a 4s which was a mistake. Heavy and slow. But I do love my turbo.

I love the analogue nature of the 993 gt3 with less electronic nannies to dilute the purity of driving experience, all these are captured in that mechanical engine sound coming into the cabin. This car is a time capsule in terms of its vintage status and the focus is on the drive, if one can overlook the somewhat unique look of the headlights then you got a gem. I concur that 996 is a miss for me, I will take the 964, 963 and the sweet spot 997 generation. When Compared to with its siblings 996 is not ageing as well as other classic Porsche due to its unique headlights imo. Thanks Pete!

I have a 996 4S that's a great car. It truly is that good middle ground. It has the wide body, all-wheel drive (to save me from wrapping myself around a tree lol) decent level of comfort (it doesn't beat you up too much) and enough speed to "feel modern". Personally I would wait for prices to drop. The prices for 996s/Caymans are absolutely absurd, these days even the high mileage examples.

Hello Peter….from that collection it might well be the GT3 but I get a bit worried about older cars at that value…I have wandered many an auction with a few very worrying old Porsche being persuaded from one sale to the next…the owner hoping the rust bubbles would not break out again. A friend paid £10,000 for a 1981 Targa in c.2000 and I remember most the aroma of dying clutch, damp floors and new respray…but he sold it for £12000 after six months….and I see it is still around, taxed, MOT and with the current owner since 2012. So I’m not sure..BUT if I could get a new one…torn…GT3 RS Weissach or MR…but guess the best real world drive…a 992 Turbo S …they would do very nicely thank you!! A neighbour bought a brand new 911 in 1980…he truly drove it as a daily car because it was his only car. In 2002 he changed to a new 996 C2…he still has it, is still his only car….and doubtless has made a profit…two cars in 40 years still worth what he paid! Good luck with the thoughts on buying….is it a Morgan or one of those on sale???😃😎😎😎😎Richard.

Ditto. I could have gone for 996 or 997, but a 40 Jahre 996 in exceptional condition came up & it chose itself! GT silver, extended leather, alcantara headlining, full electric seats, X51 (345bhp?), LSD, MO30 suspension, shot blasted chrome-look wheels (I think they’re a tight cast aluminium and polished, not coated), updated PCCM+, contemplating PSE, too. It’s got such a low mileage that I can’t justify replacing the stock shifter with the 997 GT3 all metal short shift. Even three up (my wife in the back) on the test drive, it’s quick enough. Looks, drives & even smells like a new car. Lucky to find it at the perfect moment in time. Not too powerful but enough to give me a grin each drive. I had been considering RS3, but I’ve had two S3s and couldn’t get excited about an RS3 any more. It’s also “too good”. Everything is electronic, and the newer ones have that ghastly black shiny stuff everywhere and an empty space filled only by software when you turn it on. I got a flash of insight that I’d be renting the virtual cockpit. I am never going to have such a car. I’ll be driving modern classics only from here on in (I’m 64, so quite doable). The final option was a A45S AMG but they are so rare that finding one was difficult. And do I need that much power? Not really. The only pang was seeing 997s because I do concede they’re more beautiful than the 996, only just! I didn’t find one in the condition & spec that I wanted. Had there been a Speed Yellow 997, low mileage, well maintained, fully loaded, I’d have bitten a hand off for it. But my GT silver 996 is special to look at and to drive, almost completely analogue. Just ABS & a basic TC. New cars are to me distressingly digital and I’ve particular reasons to be wary of an over digitalised life.
