Midwest mud was infamous in the 1800's, to the point that wagon trains would go around entire states (like Iowa, Kansas) because if they got stuck in the mud, it would take weeks or months to get moving again.

Coole Videoserie. Sauinteressant. Was genau machte den entscheidenden Unterschied aus zwischen Straßenpedalen und SPD? Rein theoretisch bekommt man den Fuß mit ein bisschen Gefummel in die gleiche Position relativ zur Pedalachse, oder?

Bei den Straßenpedalen ist zB die Auflagefläche um einiges größer und „satter“. Ich weiß natürlich nicht wie genau Paul seine Schuhe/Pedale fährt, aber ich hab auch MTB-SPDs am Gravel und Straßen-SPDs am Renner. Die MTB Pedale haben mehr Seitenfreiheit und alles ist insgesamt nicht so gut anknallbar wie bei den Straßenpedalen. Ich merk auch dass mir am MTB Pedal die Waden schneller hops gehen weil man einfach mehr muskulär ausgleicht und nicht so stumpf reintreten kann. Irgendwie wie ne Skibindung, die man auch vollgas anzieht wenn man härter fährt damits einem die Ski nicht davonprellt…

Sie waren nicht identisch eingestellt, was aber der Fall hätte sein müssen. Trotzdem ein Unterschied vom Tritt her und auch Stack ist und weiterer Q-Faktor. Time Cleats sind fix und man kann diese nicht seitlich bewegen (ich weiß, dass man die Cleats von links nach rechts tauschen kann und damit den Q-Faktor verändert, aber das reicht nicht).

The person on the front experiences more air resistance allowing the person behind to draft and save energy. She asked the other girl to take a turn on the front so Carolin could have a turn at saving energy rather than doing all the work on the front.

sorry to hear you had to scratch paul! i didn't quite understand from the video, what happened?

I had to change the pedals from road to MTB. Therefore the shoes as well but the cleat positioning wasn’t the same. So I was using different muscles and that got me into trouble around 7hrs into the race. I’m quite sensitive to such changes I’ve to add. Anyhow. I will come back and give it another try.

@@autsaidcc ok got it! overall, what do you think about organisation of this event? muddy section in particular - acceptable challenge for this kind of a race or it's too much and should have been rerouted?

@@vorcot I think it should have been rerouted especially as a detour was planned and available. Bu not for us pros but for the 95% of people who pay for the equipment and are there to have a good day on the bike. I know those challenges are part of the game but if you've other options then you should use them. But I do get why there made no changes - they wanted this epic race and they got it.

Das Wort das du suchst ist nicht Mud sondern Clay also Lehm. Krass das das so einen Unterschied macht. Es gibt für Bikepacking Extra so Mtb Clicks mit profil weil man oft schieben muss. Nehme an die hattest du aber nicht an. Würde es Sinn machen da Flat Pedals zu fahren? Gibt ja Studien das es keinen Unterschied macht.

It is not that simple. I fu**ed my muscles with the cleat position. I’m not quitting from the front group after 210km for no reason. And I get that people won’t understand that, but I would appreciate if they also just accept the situation. For sure this won’t happen again.

I feel like that’s one of the negatives of being “pro” some people are more concerned about position in a race and sometimes you have to let that go and just ducking ride to the finish line and deal with all of the shit-- it’s like that saying “a coward dies a thousands deaths” - shit happens out there but as pro you should have finished

@@autsaidcc I’m not trying to be a asshole I appreciate your perspective.. I know it was an extremely tough day out there but that is what this race is all about !! Every single rider pro and amateur dealt with the same issues as you did -- As a professional you are paid to deal with the worst conditions and excel due to your talent and top level gear and training - if I was one of your sponsors I’d be very disappointed in the fact that you quit because it was too hard --- you are a sponsored athlete and to me quitting should never be an option for professionals unless you are injured -- last place will always be better then quitting --- I’m sure deep down you probably wish you would have just finished and had the experience-- we all have weak moments where the situation gets the best of us but you are paid to overcome them - this wasn’t a training ride where the weather got bad so you went home !! This was one of the biggest races of the year and I would just think someone in your position would fight to the bitter end - I look forward to seeing more of your videos and I wish you the best of luck in racing and in life --

​@@60westpro Why can't everybody not decide for themself? "quitting should never be an option for professionals" never heard something bullshitter then this. Especially as a pro you have to keep in mind what is in the future and don't hurt yourself too much for no reason. Professionals don't ride there for fun, they fight for a good placement and if that goal is not reachable, it makes totally sense to not totally destroy the body and save some reserves for the next races.

@@overdosexoxo please , mate - you ride to the finish use it as a training session or just have fun and ride your bike and suffer with everyone else but quitting is ridiculous if you’re not injured •• we all know it -- do you follow world tour cycling or professional Triathlon DNF’s are so few and far between no matter how far back they are - How many times have we seen riders going down tearing up their legs and arms bloody but still riding to the finish - That’s the whole premise of professional sport - I believe someone in the XL broke their arm and they still finished !! generally professional athletes don’t let themselves quit because it can become psychological and harm you in the future when times get tough - I don’t thinks he’s a bad person I’m just giving my staunch opinion - you never know especially in a 200 mile race what could happen Keagan could have flatted 7 times - think if all of the great comebacks in sport -- that’s why you keep pushing because you never know he could have made top 10 or 20 - it’s his choice but I he has a KZbin channel that I watch so I feel I’m allowed to voice my opinion-- as someone who rides their bike a lot and loves riding their bike DNF seems like a mental fuck that is way worse then the peanut butter mud that they were dealing with -
