D2 is a type of steel used in knives. It was pretty awesome when it first came out. It's now cheap enough to be found in many Chinese knives, and it does make for a pretty good blade. It trades stainlessness for edge performance, so don't leave it wet. It's up to you whether you trust the manufacturer that it's actually D2.

It doesn't matter what kind of steel it is if it's not heat treated properly. And that's the problem with the cheap Chinese knives. Additionally, D2 isn't stainless a pretty brittle. That's why the only bubble D2 blades have a thick blade stock. ...but that still doesn't help the fragile tip.

@@alphadawg81 So maybe i should do a torture test on these knives? Put them in a vice, use a weight tool to pressure them, or maybe into my press? See what it takes before they give out to test actual strength?

Knife 2 for sure. Also, a little advice from a long time high end knife collector…you should do the paper test slowly to get a better idea of what the edge is doing as far as edge geometry and sharpness are concerned. Take care and keep up the great work!!!

I remember hearing that when Japan was recovering from WW2 they actually renamed an industrial city to "Usa". Then they could mark stuff "MADE IN USA". A lot of shenanigans go on with Asian markings, like Ta1wan. But I guess that as long as you're happy with your purchase who cares, right?

About that Gerber knife, Temu does ship from legitimate brands in the USA. They do also have their "home base" in the USA as well. Yes they are owned by a Chinese Company but they have some real winning items. Thanks so much fo testing the items for us though it helps so much to know how good the quality of an item is even from an American company. ❤

I'd wager Temu has very few U.S. brands though. I also doubt Temu stocks the legit product as well, especially concerning knives. Any knifemaker worth their salt will not be selling their knives on Temu, Gerber included. I guarantee Temu is not an authorized Gerber retailer. If you see anything from Kershaw, Benchmade, Hogue, Microtech, Spyderco, Buck, Zero Tolerance, etc, for such a cheap price it is highly likely to be a counterfeit/fake. Temu is the last place you should be buying knives. Sure it's nice to save money and get stuff for cheap, but I'd rather have the real thing even if it means I have to spend more money to get it. As a collector/enthusiast of pocket knives, it really gets my goat seeing fakes for sale on these Chinese storefronts. I want the legit stuff and this crap devalues the real McCoy.

One thing about Temu, if you see something you like keep looking, often you'll find the exact knife (or any item) at a cheaper price from another seller. Two of my favorite spring assisted folders were only $5.50. I've bought a few as gifts.

@@UnboxAnalysisOfficialyou never really know what steal or the hardening/tempering it has. It may have been hardened but never tempered leaving it brittle. Sometimes they aren’t too bad and if you lose it you won’t cry alligator tears. Some of the Chinese counterfeit knives do a darn good job of copying. Kobun is the model name. On Forged in Fire the show the judges do a tip test. use a wood mallet and hammer the knife tip into the wood (like oak not pine) maybe 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch and without pulling lay the knife flat to the wood. if the tip breaks off or bends that means bad metal or heat treating , if the tip survives that mean a good quality knife

I have a decent collection of high-end / low-end knives, from a KaBar 1211 military fixed blade, Microtech Ultratech OTF, Muela Scorpion and dozens of other blades I picked up over the years. The one knife I use daily which is razor sharp after 1 swipe on a sharpener is a cheap Chinese folder that I bought on Temu for about $8. It's funny how throughout my life it's always been the cheap stuff that has been the most reliable and least hassle.

I Love those old Camillus TL-29 electrician knives. I got one from my grandpa, who was an electrician for over 40 years, and I carry it on a regular basis. I 'm not an electrician myself, but the scraper blade, wire strippers, and flathead screwdriver really comes in handy. I've had times where I've needed to strip a battery cable, scrape adhesive off of something, or tighten loose screws and it really helped. That knife you got from temu isn't an electrician's knife. It ain't shit compared to a TL-29.

Hello I recieved the knife recently and have to say it's really worth the price. It's small enough to carry and would be perfect for a outdoor use or as knife for the kitchen. The weight feels good in hand and it seems well balanced, the pattern etched on the blade looks great and even the sheath smells like real leather! The finish on the handle is a bit rough on one side by the blade but in no way detracts from the overall appearace and functionality of the blade. For the price I got this (around $15 US) I have to say it's really worth it. Sorry this was rather long winded.

It was almost painful to watch when you got to the Gerber though - I ordered one from Temu (to fit on the backpack that I also got from Temu!) But a week later they said there was a problem with shipping the knife, cancelled it and removed the listing! I wanted it so badly by then that I considered buying it here locally but it's like £100! I was hoping you'd tell me the Temu version is junk but now I just want it even more 😂 Awesome work on the videos, they were great to begin with but they just keep getting better, and it's so cool seeing how far you've come. Keep up the good work!

When you do the wood test , hacking an shaving the wood you may try doing mega close-ups on the edge afterwards to check whether the edge had chipped or rolled or just immediately dulled. This will give all of us as well as yourself an idea of the quality of the steel an more importantly the quality of their heat treat on the steel. Good info to know!

The pen-shaped knife is not thin. It is 4mm thick, only the top is sanded. The gray color shows that it is made of high-carbon steel. I spent almost 3 hours sharpening its top with a diamond sharpener. Steel is really hard. The handle is made of rosewood. The knife, which reminded you of a karambit, makes very thin cuts on the skin of the finger, but very nasty ones. The blood won't stop flowing. He is very dangerous. What does the best knives mean? You have chosen 3 knives for completely different uses. You can only use the tanto type for combat. The one with the blue handle is a hunting knife, slightly modeled on a kukri. The downward-curved handle increases the impact force when dividing game and facilitates cutting with the front part of the blade.

Cold steel is the maker. Kubon is the model name. Aus8a is the steel. D2 is the steel type. Gerber, like all makers, have high end and low end offerings. $16 is cheap but no unheard of. If the name isnt stamped in the knife, its a mix of a bunch of steels. Flex in your hand means nothing, put it in a vise if you want to test the flex. Weight doesnt equal quality Paper test is more for edge geometry. A razor blade glides through paper but is made from very cheap steel. No edge retention. If you're going to keep reviewing knives, I'd honestly do some research into makers, steel types, it would help your reviews be more informative for people that aren't into knives.

This is a great comment. Glad I'm not the only one cringing at the lack of real info being provided here. A few things I would add/correct is that the paper test is exclusively going to test the factory edge and nothing else. And that all those damascus knives where "real damascus" in the sense that they use 2 or more different steels but for all we know it would be home debot steel as they aren't labeled meaning they are 100% of the time going to be total junk. Just because something is "real damascus" means absolutely nothing about quality and WAY more often than not at this price point it's going to be a downgrade in quality.

you need to do the paper test after the wood testing, or get some rope and cut the rope about 20 times with each knife then do the paper test to see how the edge retention is. you can sharpen a fruit rollup to the point of slicing a paper, but its not going to do it more than a few times which is the important part.

The Gerber n Cold Steel knives aren't meant to do the paper test, they're not meant to be the most slicy knives. Both models are more outdoor/tactical/military style knives. Also, I wouldn't trust the d2 stamp on those knives. It might say d2, but more than likely won't hold up like d2.

I’m curious, other than buttering your toast, have you ever used a knife before? The “test” with the 2x4; what was the intent? It did nothing but provide a very weak indication of the weight of the knife. And the paper slice? Slow down! If you plan on doing this again, I recommend that you watch a few videos with someone knowledgeable on the subject. Also learn common names of blade steels and manufacturers.
@BennyBladez-
@BennyBladez- 8 ай бұрын
D2 is a type of tool steel with good edge retention tough and durable with low chromium making it non corrosive resistant or stainless. It will rust so you’ll need to oil it. Weight doesn’t mean quality or that it’s super solid. Also that knife labeled cold steel is not a cold Steel knife. Cold Steel is a brand.

I'd love to see a baton test into the wood, but would expect it to damage/destroy most knives. Then perform paper test again after the wood to see how much of that super sharp edge is still there.

Please do the torture tests!!! In the soul of that gerber knife you bought….i was HOUNDED with advertisements during the holidays for that particular knife…and it is a 100% perfect clone of the original. But, the test I’d like to see you do is this. Take the temu one, and an actual gerber strongarm, stab them into a stump, and pry it to the side to remove it from the wood. I’m betting the actual gerber will bend, and the temu will break. So to me, “the good knife” would be able to be hammered straight, and resharpened to be usable, while the cheap on can be ground down to a shape, and maybe resharpened with what’s left… if it doesn’t snap at the hilt. Just as an example my favorite machete bends like a wet spaghetti noodle when I shake it side to side. But, while swinging it around to chop thorn covered rush, I hit rocks, and it bends the edge over, but never breaks my blade in half. And I only keep it sharp enough to cut soft wet wood with a few chops, but more than one, cuz if I miss, I don’t want to cut my own foot off in one failed swipe.

Years ago, I purchased some knives from vova, which were similar to temu, distributors for chinese goods. The vova knives were all junk, their ESEE Izula was made from cast iron, blunt and refused to take any acceptable edge. Temu surprised me, their blades are hardened and come sharp - I wouldn't rely on their claims about beeing D2, M390 or the handles made from titanium (it mostly refers to the colour- real titanium goods like pots and cups are at an equal price point as here), as well as beeing from Cold Steel or Gerber. They are knock-offs, but usable if you don't expect them to be as strong and capable as the originals. Haven't tested their toughness yet, but don't expect much - somewhere they must save costs and hardening and tempering the blades is an easy way.
@BradGryphonn
@BradGryphonn Жыл бұрын
The interesting thing about these top 3 picks is that they've all been discontinued. I'd suggest that is because they are counterfeit knives. Dubious Chinese companies will produce copies of well-known knives, using cheaper materials, including 'pot' steel, steel used to make cooking pots, but labeled as higher-end steel. That type of pot steel can't be properly heat-treated and will go blunt almost immediately, and be very hard to get a sharp edge. Not because the steel is hard, but because it is too soft. I have a genuine Gerber Strongarm (like the copy in your video), and it was about USD80. It is a tough, sharp, all-rounder that is a great tool. I would suggest that these knives might be fine to have around to 'show off', but they won't be practical for any real use. With respect to which one I think is the best value, I'd pick No2. It has a minimalist aesthetic, and looks expensive. Plus, you can't beat the price. Cheers from Australia.

I've been buying a lot of 12-volt switches, junction boxes, and bridges for my home-on-wheels build. I can get the same items at most times better quality for a quarter the cost at an outlet here. Most of the companies here are franchise/chain auto stores that are buying from the same suppliers anyway. I don't think I'd buy precision tools or power tools through Temu though...or flashlights/torches etc. Anyway, I'm rambling. I like the way you present your Temu hauls. Very cool.

You are clearly good at being on screen, filming, editing etc, and reviewing items looks like it come naturally to you, but maybe something more in you wheelhouse would be better suited.
