500 IP Cameras to the scrap heap, I'll get some boards, probably under $2 for each box but it does add up.
ot my preferred way to deal with stuff like this but it was a one off destruction contract, that's just how it goes sometimes.

Still, so many comments about selling and giving away the cameras to people who want/need them, even though he clearly explained that he cannot give these to ANYONE under ANY circumstances. He is under contract.

I would say this particular contract is unethical, it promotes dirty recycling. No personal or otherwise sensitive data is stored in the cameras memory, therefore resources and energy are wasted on 'scrapping' just to have at least some of the materials go right back into the same product.

Was the destruction order based on them being a security risk? Cheap IP cameras have weak security in relation to default usernames and passwords that have lead to websites hosting live cameras of people's lounges, gardens and property.

You have to wonder if maybe there was a defect with the camera, maybe with the wiring in a specific lot. Could have made them a safety risk... Hence the reason for the destroy only. Not allowing resale. Because if there was something wrong with them the company would be liable... I am not saying that is why they did that just a potential reason...

Would you be able to sell components, such as all those Ethernet patch cables? I see a package of 6 1-foot patch cables on Amazon for about $9. So it might be worth your time to try and sell them on e-bay in lots of 10, 20 or 50. The Ethernet patch cables are the ones with the plugs that look like a wider than normal telephone plug.
@EngineTuning
@EngineTuning 6 жыл бұрын
I must confess, I had the same thought ... That some of the elements of the kit were worth almost nothing as scrap, but as manufactured items, they would retain value. Those cables were in original wrapping ... perfect for trading. Obviously, as others have mentioned, he knows how he runs his business. ... but when you have a large quantity of packaged 'standard' components, they will have value to small scale manufacturers / retail outlets. These items are still current; it's not like they are outdated. Anyway, it's his biz so he gets to decide; and maybe he just can't be arsed to shift them by other means.

All the people complaining about destruction and waste. This is the life cycle of electronics people. And its not really that wasteful because most of it get repurposed as recycled raw materials. only a portion of it end up in landfills, this man is doing a service to the community by breaking these things down when they would otherwise just be buried in a hole in the ground.

@mackjeez
@mackjeez 6 жыл бұрын
@Jeremy R Why? First off those are without a doubt cat5 cables and they're really short which make them limited to what you can use them for, second point, they're pretty cheap, just get a box and clip your own if you need to wire server(s) room(s). I buy a 1000ft box of cat 6 cable for around $70 and the cat6 plugs are like $5 for 100.
@mackjeez
@mackjeez 6 жыл бұрын
@illuded perception Cat6a cables are not needed unless you're doing lengthy installs. Extra shielding is not required for a server room unless it's exposed to EMI sources, the UTP standard which has some EMI protection through wire twisting should work perfectly fine.
@GRHmedia
@GRHmedia 6 жыл бұрын
My bet is if you read that contract closer. It says you can't sell it intact because you are allowed to dispose of the scrap. Or you wouldn't be allowed to even sell the screws and so on. So take the units apart and remove the labeling and sell it as a diy kit to be put together. You know for hobbyist. You probably can sell them for more than $30 each then and you still won't violate the contract. But the amount of effort you are putting into it. Hell my time is worth a lot more than that. If I couldn't do what I said above I would have told them keep it.

My main yard buys the gold connectors for .08 cents a pound. I always cut them off. Also the phone wire you called low grade in my area pays way more than your mid grade wire. There is more copper content. I separate all those wire/cord types. This is just like I was saying in another comment. Every state in the U.S. or other Country's scrap yards pay different prices. Interesting. No yard in my area takes plastics like that for the camera. All that is actually burned in giant incinerators that power the whole plant. It is all clean burning and there is no waste materials. Take Care.

Well thats a bit of a false equivalency, hard drives for many are a security issue and it is very common to destroy them for just that reason. These cameras are new in the box from Taiwan and clearly never been used. It would make far more sense to resell them.

I'd say, you just don't have friends at correct places. back when I worked for Johnson Controls, I had to disassemble and recycle around 200 laptop hardrives [500gb each] trough recycling company. But I made friends there, so I they gave me certificates for every drive as if it was recycled. all I did was I took them home and used software to fill them with zeros and reformat them twice. Data on them were gone for good. And i've sold them for 20€ each. And about data on them... I was really not interested in child porn they stored on them...

I get tired of people asking me the same questions. I scrapped 2 pallets of cisco office phones. Everyone was saying sell them. I try to explain to people you can't just sell them one at a time. It would take years. I get in loads every week of items and have no room to store items. Also I cannot test everything. I've always just broken my electronics down and sold them fast to make room for the next loads. Your probably among my top 5 favorite scrappers here on KZbin mainly because your honest. You don' have to use a bunch of vulgar language like others. You keep your site clean and professional. Your a lot like me. Keep up the good work and don't ever let the down thumbs people leave get to you. They are just people who don't have a clue how much work is involved in a scrapping business. They also don't understand that every state or country has different recycling laws. In my state I have no place to take television glass so I take it to a goodwill where it can be disposed of. I can't sell scrap plastic. It has to be taken to our incinerators. Just the laws where I live. Take Care. Kerry.

Who said that you need to sell them one by one ? You can sell them all in one time, for a very small price, or sell them in batches of 20 or more. You will earn more money than scrapping it, and more importantly you are doing a good thing for the environment, as scrapping brand new equipment only because for no reason at all is not very green...

Dont worry not only will the company write it off at tax time they will sting you then next time you buy a product off them to cover the losses from these items, its how business works, fuck over the consumer then bitch about lost sales.

This is why shit cost so much in Australia, they scrap thousands and somtimes millions of dollars in usable equipment, write it off as a loss at tax time then include the price of the scrapped gear into the price of the new stock. Ive been at tips when cadburys chocolate, BMW, Bosch ect have dumped security loads worth millions just to get rid of stock and claim a loss, ive even seen truck loads and i mean semi truck loads full of cigarettes and mixed alcoholic drinks just pushed into a hole and run over with a compactor just because, then you as an end user pay through the nose for the products.

good on you for recycling responsibly.. But man, get yourself some power tools and proper drivers for unbolting things. I can't imagine how tired your hands are from unscrewing all that stuff by hand :-0

Ben, you should try to cash on your introduction catchphrase. A lot of big youtube channels supplement their income with the merchandise.

Because he's signed a contract to destroy them. If he sold them the company would take legal action and he wouldn't get any more lots.

A little bit of a back story as to why these brand new units 'HAVE' to be scrapped rather than re-sold would have been beneficial because many people are aware of old equipment that needs to be ewasted but they have trouble understanding why brand new untouched items have to be scrapped. These camera's were brand new yet the company you acquired them from said not to sell, just scrap, why? It just helps your viewers understand that bit better, that's all.

it could have been a customs seizure. Most likely chinese firm that have lied on their customs forms, saying they were worth nothing, and therefore not paid any duty and tax. Option for them to pay, but they'll refuse and just cut their losses.
