Great video! And, I think the HP Tools partition (that you mentioned in 9:57) has HP's Quick Start stuff on it, you might wanna boot the PC in that mode to see what it contains. Cathode Ray Dude covered it a while ago in Episode 7.

With that discrete graphics card, this laptop was perfectly adequate for Vista (It could even have had Windows 7 if it had been a late 2009 machine, which would have been perfect). In fact, consumer laptops had long left XP behind. Like 2 years before in fact. This is a business-oriented machine and in that field, XP stayed alive for a tad longer. Another thing that was awkward is the HP OS installer having a 2003 copyright date on it, I wonder what the deal is with that.

also Lenovo even made Kaby Lake ThinkPads with Windows 7 because Businesses wanted it, Businesses love old versions of Windows so much that you can even see Windows 3.11 in German Railways

I'll say that was a great deal! Some people try to sell used units of this model for not that much less (whether they are worth it is another story), and now we have this cool unboxing experience to watch. Great!

i LOVE unboxing new tech like this. you don't know the amount of times i've repackaged my devices to unbox them again. i pretty much keep every peel of my tech. (not anymore lol)

The CFL must have degraded over time. Fortunately, this should have a very common panel and you can even retrofit it with a lcd backlight strip quite easily. BTW, I dig HP's mid 00's laptop design.

Very cool machine. Lots of things that could be done with this. And for the price it would have been hard to pass up. Looking forward to seeing what becomes on this machine

The Elite Pro was HP’s top of the line laptop from that era. I expected given the specs, the last version of Windows it can run is Windows 11 23H2. It lacks SSE4.2 and POPCNT to boot 24H2. What a splendid machine in mint condition1 😊

while they were preloading 7 on 8.x era laptops they at least put a 7 sticker on it, though the keyboard would still have the 8.x-10 Windows key

Honestly I have great luck with Fujitsu drives. Never had one die, and they are decently quick.

I also had good luck with Fujitsu drives but all of mine are ide for my older laptops

I'm wondering if you may have a bad capacitor in the display backlighting circuit.... I have a LightScribe compatible desktop drive and some DVD-ROMs that would probably work with it. I'll have to give it a try sometime. Never used it back in the day myself.
