THIS WEEK’S FEATURED WATCH
White Gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Meteorite Dial ref 116509
Shop Pre-Owned Rolex Daytona Watches: www.bobswatches.com/rolex-daytona-1.html
The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is the Big Crown’s signature chronograph, outfitted with a stopwatch function, tachymeter bezel, and sub-dial counters. While chronographs were initially developed as professional tools for pilots, racecar drivers, and even astronauts, today, they appeal to modern collectors of all professions with their distinctive and functional aesthetic.
The Daytona was released in the 1960s and christened with the name of the iconic Daytona Speedway, of which Rolex was the official timekeeper. The contemporary, 6-digit generation started to take shape shortly after the turn of the new millennium, with ref. 116509, making its debut in 2004.
Specs:
The 6-digit Daytona is outfitted with an in-house Rolex caliber 4130 Perpetual movement, which replaced the outsourced Zenith El Primero movement in 2000. It uses fewer parts than the Zenith movement and boasts a longer 72-hour power reserve.
As a newer Daytona, ref. 116509 also takes advantage of the innovative Triplock screw-down crown with three waterproof sealed zones, scratch-resistant sapphire, and longer-lasting Chromalight, depending on the year the watch was produced.
The Daytona also notably sports a standard 40mm Oyster case and a three-link bracelet secured by an Oysterclasp.
Rolex produced the 6-digit generation in every metal finish you can imagine, including lustrous 18k white gold forged in-house for a far more superior metal finish than other brands.
The Meteorite Dial:
The all-gold masterpiece is the perfect canvas for the rare and out-of-this-world meteorite dial, which is decorated with luminescent baton hour markers, the famous Rolex coronet logo, and black chronograph registers. The Daytona logo reminds us that this gold stunner is a sports watch at heart in bright red.
Meteorite is a common watchmaking material, which Rolex sourced from the Gibeon meteorite in Namibia, Africa. New laws now protect jewelry and watchmakers from sourcing material from the meteorite, making these dials increasingly rare.
The Daytona sports a slice of the legendary meteorite that has been treated to reveal stunning striations and “ribbons.” Additionally, no two meteorite dials will ever be alike.
This watch has since been discontinued to make way for the current production model, ref 126509.
Rolex Daytona 11650 Price:
This watch commands a premium on the secondary market because it uses precious and rare materials. The average price as of the filming of this video is upwards of $50,000.
That’s a wrap on this week’s edition of Watch in the Box. Join us next week to see what we unbox.
