Meerschaum is absolutely one of my favorite pipe materials and I'm super excited to open and restore this Peterson Meerschaum that I found on eBay!

Great job. I professionally sharpen, and make knives, so i have a good bit of experience when it comes to polishing. One thing I'd recommend is changing directions each time you move up in grit. So say you're at 1000 grit, and youre polishing north to south, then when you go to 1500 you change direction to east/west, then at 3000 you go diagonally, etc. This allows you to make sure you have the previous scratches removed before moving on to the next grit

I have that e a same pipe. I have a decent collection of rare, vintage Peterson meers. I LOVE them.

i actually got one of these recently. a beautiful, smaller, fumed one. since these are all african block, they really, really don't take on any patina from regular smoking. they are also fairly hardy and dense compared to turkish block. however, i didn't risk it with any liquids and just went with the spit route. spit shined the crusty rim to shiny perfection, reamed the draw with a bent double pipe cleaner pushing out about 50 years worth of lakeland gunk. i still need to polish the silver mount and deoxidize and polish the stem, but that'll happen soon enough.

Lol. Yeah, the best thing about using a high proof bourbon is that you get to “sample” while you work. 😂 Thanks a lot though. One of these days, I’ll build out a real workshop and try my hand at some more complex repair/restorations! 🔥

Meerschaum, briar and cobs are my favorites. I've smoked pear and cherry too and they're OK as well, but the big three are the big three for a reason. I have an attempted match of Dunhill's 365 which isn't perfect, but is still delicious. I haven't tried it out of a cob yet, but, so long as both are dry, meerschaum and briar provide a sublime smoke with this tobacco.

Subbed. Been really getting into Meers the past year. Finally found one I truly love. Took about 8 tries but I can always sell the others. They’re good. This sms just fits what I want.. I do want to try a Peterson Meer someday. A friend just got one the other day. Just like these. I need to figure out how to re-clock some of these. Some older ones came over clocked. I can do that all day with screw in pipes… haven’t tried on threaded plastic yet. As for cake in a Meer, once I’m able to get it out mostly, a very low speed rotary tool with a split mandrel and some strips of sandpaper will make an easy flap wheel that’s very controllable as far as no pressure on the Meer and can adjust how much cake is removed based on grit so not to over do it. Just need a slow speed rotary, not a standard dremel style.

Wait. Top 10 pipe materials? Briar, bog wood, steel, corn cob, meerschaum, clay………. I guess if you count the various other woods that might be used.

Hi, is there a way to neutralize the head of a meerschaum estate after scraping it out? You can't go like Bruyere and do it with salt and alcohol.
@Cornerstone-bk8vl
@Cornerstone-bk8vl 7 ай бұрын
I inherited a giant bulldog meerschaum, the guy who owned it smoked vanilla aromatics through it for decades and it had massive cake. I carefully reamed it, but it still smells like vanilla and is pretty ghosted. I might have to risk the salt and alcohol treatment. Any other ideas?

Top ten pipe materials ? Are there even more than ten??
@michaelmorrison4843

Overall a good job except removing the cake! Using the sharp pick and knife blade could damage the inside of the bowl ! Using a pipe reamer is the perfect tool for this! It will remove the cake a little at a time and retains the shape of the bowl! I've done this hundreds of times over 50+ yrs. and never had a problem! 👍🤔

I have an estate meershaum pipe that cracked away from the stem. Can you glue it back together? If so, what do you recommend.

Fantastic video and what a restoration. Great work! I love meerschaums myself. Do you ever treat the scorched bowl rim or just leave as is?
@OrderofthePipe
@OrderofthePipe 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot! Yeah, meerschaums are definitely underrated. So, that's a great question! When the rim is truly scorched, I don't actually know of a good way to get rid of that on a Meer, aside from heavy sanding. I should definitely do some more research on that! But in this case, the flumed rim was holding up pretty well. And the good thing about a flumed rim is that it actually hides a lot of scorching that may take place. Another reason that I love these '60s - '70s era Peterson meers!

@@OrderofthePipe This is my first time seeing these Peterson meers, and I love them! They look to be 9mm filtered, yes?
@OrderofthePipe
@OrderofthePipe 2 жыл бұрын
@@SmokesaPipe Yeah, the Petersons with this finish might be my new obsession. Lol. But no. No filter at all. Do you prefer a filter?
@SmokesaPipe
@SmokesaPipe 2 жыл бұрын
@@OrderofthePipe I tend to smoke wet (code for too fast) so the 9mn filter does a great job reducing moisture. All my briars are 9mm and about half of my meers as well

@@SmokesaPipe Yeah, I should actually consider trying more filtered pipes for the same reason. 👍

This is why these pipe smoking mythology bothers me. Just because they are white and you can see the absorbed tars , doesn’t mean briar pipes don’t do the same thing. That’s why briar pipes get much darker in time. You all believe something without thinking about it by yourself
