Hi Sarah, as this 'Digital wind instrument' and the Re.corder are in the same price range it would be really nice to see a comparison video. How would you compare this one to the Re.corder as far as delay and response? I returned my Re.corder because the delay was way too long, and if I tried to play one of their beginner lessons through the app it couldn't register faster notes. When I contacted Artinoise about that they simply replied the app allowed enough room for errors and that was just ridiculous to me.
@Dave-nm8uk2 жыл бұрын
It'd be good to see a video comparing several different electronic "recorders" and digital wind instruments. Apart from the recorders, there are also similar models by Akai and Roland. What would also be useful would be a link to suppliers of these. For the recorder it's quite a niche market, so identifying the manufacturer's and suppliers can be quite difficult. Currently I can't find where to buy or get more information about the re.corder or this CarryOn instrument. This one could be great - but where do I get one?
@LarryShone2 жыл бұрын

This instrument is almost half the price of the re.corder in my country, and works standalone with its internal speaker and sound module. The re.corder needs to be paired with a phone to make any noise at all, and I think there are delay problems with the bluetooth MIDI. I'm very happy with this one anyway! The Akai EWI Solo looks great too but it's a lot more expensive and has no bluetooth MIDI at all.

This is very cool! I've been enjoying using my Artinoise Re.corder to play silently in my NYC apartment and to record multitrack pieces into Reaper using various exciting MIDI patches, but it doesn't have a speaker. This might be a fun option for a recorder I can play silently using headphones without having to go through a phone or computer MIDI bridge. I kinda wish there were some funkier/wilder synth sounds on it, though. Also I might get one for my 5-year-old, who's interested in learning recorder and loves electronics. I haven't been sure how to balance early recorder learning with apartment living, but this seems like a workable solution!

A bit of a luxury, but the EWI Solo is another option that has 200 built-in sounds and a much wider pitch range due to the octave rollers and saxophone-style keys. I'm not a sax expert but I think the fingering is a bit more logical too (and can be totally customised) and it reacts to bite as well as breath.
@lkj9742 жыл бұрын
I am really interested in this for my step-mom, who is almost 90 and has had to give up the flute. She has tried the recorder, but the forked fingerings were really challenging. I was excited about the simple fingering, but when I looked at the chart… it didn’t seem that simple. A little disappointed. Perhaps they should consider a truly simple fingering mode, maybe giving up a bit of range. This could be helpful to the very young and very old.
@richardharris97082 жыл бұрын
The simple fingering mode is very simple if you stick to C major, no forks or half-holes at all (except for the thumb). Transpose can be used to play different keys.

One thing you didn't mention about the difference between recorder-style fingering and "simple" fingering is that the simple fingering provides a full three-octave range, using the three possible positions on the thumb contacts (neither contact, only the closer contact, or both contacts). The most annoying thing about "simple" fingering is that C# and D can only be fingered in all three octaves the way the low C# and D are fingered on the soprano recorder, making transitions between octaves rather clumsy. Also, it is unfortunate that they didn't use all three thumb positions in the recorder-style fingering to provide a wider pitch range. The main weakness of the instrument, however, is the latency-- not being able to play a trill is a serious drawback, in my opinion. For the price, it is a reasonably attractive instrument, however, especially considering the bluetooth capability, which I have not yet tried.
@tonyhorowitz90562 жыл бұрын
I just discovered an odd fingering for C# in the "simple" fingering-- just the tall finger and ring finger on the right hand (the pinky can also be added). This helps a bit with the transition between octaves. Perhaps there are other alternate fingerings not mentioned in the fingering chart.

I just bought the Digital Wind Instrument and like it for practicing some difficult passages without bothering others. But the fingering differences are a bit annoying. As you mention, the low B-flat doesn't require closing hole 4, but if you close hole 4 it becomes a B! Also, the low F fingering T123467 works, but if you open 7 (which we sometimes do when playing fast) it becomes an E, although T1234 also produces an F.

Hiya Sarah, I see that others have asked this too. I'm an Artinoise re.corder owner and have found the latency to be the biggest problem with that. An interesting review. Could be very useful for some people. A few questions need more consideration. 1. I hear that the battery life is about 3 hours. How long does it take to charge up? Wouldn't be able to get too many hours playing in if charging took a long while. 2, Is this a throw-away instrument when/if the battery fails? 3. Does it do Midi over USB - which many controllers do now, or does it only use Bluetooth. Almost the same, but related question is 4. Does the USB connection only function for charging? The latency seems one of the bigger issues - so 5. is Blackstar going to update this in time?

I've got a similar instrument by Roland, the AE-01. It's got Bluetooth and the USB port will connect to any digital audio workstation (DAW) over it. Got it. It's very nice! It turns out that Carry-On is an OEM for a company in China named "Midiplus". The contacts on the bottom for the thumb are indeed a double hole. Covering one, the other, or none, you can get about 3 octaves out of it. I also found that you can use it while it's charging, so you can connect it to a power bank to operate longer than the 3 hours of the internal battery. I wish you could get higher notes with overblow, but it clearly can't do that. The "case" is just a cloth bag. I'm going to see if I can find a long, thin hard sided pencil case or similar to protect it better. But seriously, this thing weighs only about 100 grams, 1/5th that of my AE-01 or my Tromba plastic trumpet.

Thank you Sarah for this uselful review. I am very interested in acquiring an electronic recorder and your insight is so important to help me decide. I admit that up to now, I'm not overly impressed. My purpose is to have a recorder I can practice with at any time during the day and night, no matter the hour or the neighbours. A little bit like the "silent" collection of Yamaha that, up to now, features violin, viola, cello and guitar. But if I am not wrong, I believe they have made an electronic saxophone too, proving that you can actualy do wind instruments. This "digital wind instrument" offers features I don't need (the different voices) but, as you mentioned, does not respond "correctly" to breath, articulation and finger speed. I also don't need the midi functions, but that's me being an IT neanderthal: I realise they are an asset for younger, IT savvy musicians and I don't really mind them. I can even see myself using them, to an extent, in the future to better my playing or play over accompaniment. But, most of all, I need an instrument that plays exactly like a recorder but I can use with headphones (or low volume).
@MatthewWaltonWalton2 жыл бұрын
I've long been frustrated that most of the electric wind instruments are based on sax-like fingering systems, some of them with "reeds" included. They're nice controllers, but not so good for a recorder player like us. But then there are more sax players... Eventually I've settled on an Aodyo Sylphyo, but it is its own instrument despite its recorder-like fingering, and is not suitable for use as a silent practice instrument unfortunately.
@echse332 жыл бұрын

Not to pick on you Simon but I am guessing she meant that the Bluetooth feature was the last thing she noticed on this particular instrument. Unlike the other function buttons, the Bluetooth button seems to just have the symbol imprinted and not colored in. Sarah can speak for herself but her look seems more like an “Oh! That is what that little button is.” type of look. The feature is well covered in the documentation but just picking up the instrument it may not be obvious that there is any Bluetooth functionality. There does not seem to be a companion app for the device.

Nice! I wonder if it can measure temperature too hehehe. Jokes aside. Very interesting technology. Unfortunately it couldn't handle the lightning speed. But hopefully they can improve the technology - maybe. Also 3:07 --- nice jingle bells! (or is it squid game!!).
