Joey, while its not a requirement, having a small grain sand for the bottom of a saltwater ray tank is a good idea. They like to bury in the sand. It can't be too coarse or they will scratch their bellies. Not sure on what they say about freshwater ones. I have no experience with freshwater rays.
@MaddieGraffeo4 жыл бұрын
people suggest fine grain sand for rays and sharks because it is less likely to scratch their sensitive bellies.

Joey : says he’s the first one to breed the botsmanni stingray in captivity like it’s no big deal Me : In shock “ I can’t even keep a fish”
@sdsmth14 жыл бұрын
To help explain what Joey is talking about with the physiology of the stingrays. Basically, it is because of osmosis. In a saltwater environment, fish species (teleosts, which includes elasmobranchs) can passively transport salts built up in the body using the osmotic gradient created by the salt water, meaning they don't have to pee or poop it out, it just passes through areas on their bodies and works with the water parameters. In freshwater, the osmotic gradient forces fish to use active transport, so they have to convert all the salts to waste like ammonia and poop and pee it out. Therefore, freshwater fish create more solid waste than saltwater, making tank maintenance a little easier in a saltwater system.
