Also good for RPGs like Call of Cthulhu or skirmish rules like Pulp Alley set in the 1920s and 30s

I really would love to make them as just French Resistance. But I'm also thinking about taking some of my spare Imperial Guard bits and making a squad of Conscripts.

I am planning on making Polish resistance fighters with them. They are really versatile figures :)

Exactly what I was thinking - and the "Call of Cthulhu" boxed set over the reviewer's shoulder suggests Jazz-age and pulp-era Call of Cthulhu investigators as well: I'm hoping there are more sets in the future for female "resistance" and males to add more variety in costumes and gear - a wider variety of hats and, as you say, Thompsons and shotguns - as well as things like sticks of dynamite, Molotovs, axes and clubs - would certainly add to the variety of armed civilians that could be built for a range of subjects through most of the 20th century! I've also seen this kit kit-bashed with modern weapons such as assault rifles, and heads without hats, to make some pretty convincing modern/post-apocalyptic zombie hunters: those "French resistance" costumes aren't very far out of place even for the late 20th up to 21st century fashion. I bet some creative modelers could kit-bash this set with some of those new Stargrave sci-fi kits to create cyberpunk style near-future detectives, smugglers, militia, corporate goons, and the like for games like Cyberpunk, Shadowrun, Paranoia, Stargrave, Starfinder, Star Wars, and the like! We're in sort of a golden age of plastic miniatures - hopefully we'll see more miniature kits like this that are useful for civilian Gaslight-to-Near-Future gaming subjects ranging from the Weird West and Gaslight London, to Victorian sci-fi and steampunk, to Jazz-age Cthulhu and pulp investigators, to all manner of civil wars and historical conflicts, to modern militias and revolutionaries, to near-future, post-apocalyptic, and other "future" sci-fi settings.... With that in mind, Great Escape Games has recently released boxed sets like this for Western gunfighters... the kit looks great from the sample photos I've seen, the Wild West subject is cool and useful for other settings (Victorian-era Australia, Cuba, and the Philippines come to mind, along with pulp, fantasy, and sci-fi subjects like the Weird West) - I can't wait to see what else these new gaming miniature manufacturers come up with to break the traditional mold of generic medieval, Napoleonic, and WWII historicals, and standard sword-and-sorcery fantasy kits, to instead bring us some miniature subjects that have never been done before!

Really love Gary’s output. Would just say next time maybe offer size comparisons for extra coolness against other WW2 minis here for example.

My only gripe with this box is the number of rifles included. One firing and one carried is a bit limiting.

I'm going to go with what Gerry said: the thinking is that pistols and SMGs are more stereotypical resistance-friendly weapons. I couldn't help thinking that it would be nice to see more shotguns and improvised weapons like axes, clubs, molotovs, dynamite, brickbats, and the like, as well as e.g. the Thompson SMG, and perhaps a bigger variety of heads with hats: this set seems to me to otherwise be well-suited for all sorts of early-mid 20th century gangsters, rioting mobs, rebellions, pulp investigators and adventurers, and so on. For a first-of-its-kind kit, though, this isn't bad at all, and the "(I)" in the kit's name sounds like a good sign that additional kits with better variety are on the way! As for rifles, I'm betting that arms from more traditional military kits, with suitable military rifles, can be easily kitbashed into this set: I've a feeling the military uniforms will swap more or less seamlessly with the civilian jacket sleeves, and those military kits do seem to typically include plenty of spare rifles arms! (Maybe that will prove to be a good source of those elusive Thompson SMGs and things like PPSHs too, now that I think of it....)

Nice review, thanks. Besides using for French, these would be good for Spanish Civil war, esp. with the berets and side caps. With careful attention to head gear and weapons, these can work for Russian partisans. i am using mine in conjunction with the useful Bolt Action French (with women) for the Very British Civil War. Especially good when weapon and head options are expanded with various metal ones available.

I wonder how easy it would be to kitbash with more German weaponry. Hoping that some female resistance fighters are next.
@pietrayday9915

I've not seen any examples of that sort of kitbashing yet, but I have seen someone kitbash some modern assault rifles from "zombie hunter" kits onto these guys, and the results looked great: I have a feeling that German kits with lighter-duty uniforms will kitbash nicely onto these models with minimal modeling needed to make it work, since uniform jackets aren't going to be all that different in proportion to the civilian jackets these resistance guys are wearing. (Figures in heavier coats for e.g. the Eastern Front might be a very different story, but any kits for, say, the North African campaign might work just about as well as kits in lighter western European theatre uniforms....) I don't have any German weaponry in my stash of stuff, but I do have a couple boxes of these resistance fighters, and a bunch of other odds-and-ends, and can't wait to see what can be done with them: I'm betting the new Stargrave sci-fi weapons won't be too hard to kitbash onto these resistance bodies to create cyberpunk noir detectives, and Frostgrave Cultist bits won't be too hard to kitbash onto these guys to make Jazz-age Cthulhu cultists....

Add some of the WWI German weapons and you have early Easter Rising along with the troubles in 1920s and 1930s Germany and emerging new states

Great idea actually, perhaps some seperate arms from one of the warlord kits and give them earlier Lee Enfield's, shotguns, howth Mauser's if anyone does them. Probably need a handful of metal heads with flat caps, trilby's and just bareheaded. On that subject, they've make great UVF / early b and c specials (before uniforms were issued), especially with some having armbands and the odd bowler hat visable

I don't know any details about it, but Wargames Atlantic recently announced a partnership with Grey For Now Games to produce military kits for a WWII skirmish game called "02 Hundred Hours: Night Raids in WWII" which sounds to me like it might fit the bill of a system for asymmetric warfare that practically begs for this French Resistance kit to participate! The first kit that Wargames Atlantic announced for this partnership is, predictably enough, WWII German Sentries: a more natural foil for your first French Resistance "night raids" is hard to imagine!

a very british civil war?
@Bluecho4
@Bluecho4 2 жыл бұрын
It's a miniatures line/game that posits an alternate universe conflict within Britain, the eponymous civil war. It's set in the 30s, if I remember correctly. Basically, it's what would happen if the same sort of thing happened in the Spanish Civil War, but in England.
@pietrayday9915
@pietrayday9915 2 жыл бұрын
@@Bluecho4 - I've never heard of it, but it sounds intriguing - I bet that many miniatures suitable for Call of Cthulhu and pulp gaming, as well as WWI-WWII wargaming, could be useful for this game, and vice-versa, and this kit seems especially well-suited for it. Wargames Atlantic apparently has a kit of "Space British" figures in the works right now, which look suspiciously similar to WWI-WWII era British soldiers (overcoats, boot gaiters, and Brodie-style helmets with gas masks), with a mix of WWII-style, modern, and sci-fi weaponry, along with a few alternative uniform bits (like body armor) that might be out of place on historical figures, but would surely be handwaved for alt-history: I'm planning to grab a box or two for use in pulp/Weird horror gaming (I'd be just as willing to handwave them as squads of Jazz-era US "Delta Green" soldiers, requiring only some appropriate weapons swaps), but I have a feeling this "Space British" kit would work really nicely with A Very British Civil War, by the sound of it!
