Pronunciation aid for the word LANGSPILl: Lang: The a before ng sounds like ow in owl. Spil: There is absolutely no Rheinisches Schärfung in Icelandic, so NO Schractchen-Donnerwetter sound before the p - please. The p actually sound lika a b and the best pronunciation is like spill as in oil spill, but silencing the l a little. In Icelandic the l is in the front of the mouth and at the end of the tongue . It´s difficult, I know. The bulge of your d-shaped, and very well sounding langspil (has a deep tone like the one I built when I was 12) is among the largest I have seen. If you want to get an idea of the different types of Langspil, with or without a bulge (which is not necessarily a chronological indication) please go to my blog, where I have a series of entries on the Langspil fornleifur.blog.is/blog/fornleifur/entry/1290064/ . I agree that the roots of the Langspil ar in the Hummel (Scheitholt) and mainly in the Frisian Balke. You should get Wilfried Ulrich's The Story of the Hummel (2011). It's an misconception that the the Langspil derived from Norway to Iceland. It most likely arrived in Iceland with Dutch sailors in the 17th century.

Nice job Niccolo. I didn't know you were doing this series. A quick note on names. Scheitholt was used by Michael Praetorius back in the day, and revived by Jean Ritchie who called the ancestors of the mountain dulcimer, like the one in the photo in your video, German Scheitholt, but the commonly used, popular name in northern Europe was hummel. As Vilhjálmur says here, the body shape with a curved belly, is not a chronological indicator. That shape turns up on Iceland all the way back and also in hummels in mainland Europe. Wilfried Ulrich has a great website at: www.ulrich-instrumente.de/.
