IT'S NOT THE DISPLAY DATA CABLE! I got this exact same model MBP shipped to me, and it had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM! I thought it was the display cable, so I bought a new one, and it had the same problem. I'm sorry to say, you will need a new LCD… I'm getting now for my machine soon.

Well damn. Reminds me of the Aluminum MacBook I bought back in 2011...a day after I got it the LCD started jacking up like this. I think it was the shipping people because the box arrived in terrible condition.

Oh Dayum! Be prepared for total and utter logic board failure some time soon. I went through 3 boards on my 08 MBP due to that fucking faulty 8600GT chip. Run something like SMC fan control to keep it cool but I'm afraid to say your laptop is a ticking time bomb :/

Jack S New Macs don't seem to have any heat issues, but I think Intel is more to thank for that ever since their Haswell chips which are just... Wow. A yaer later, and I'm still amazed at what Haswell brought to the table. I can get at least 6 hours of battery life on my quad-core Haswell MacBook Pro, which is pretty insane.

Its the 8600 gt grpahics card, I own both a 2008 and 2007 macbook pro. The 2008 is completely dead. The 2007 Macbook Pro has been fixed with a copper shim and reflow. But it will probably stop working in 3 months. These machines are extremely unreliable. Yours started to temporary working again because the gpu chip has heated up temporary contacting the balls of solder to the board. Im sorry, you should probably contact the seller regardlessly of it working now. As always great video Tom.

I agree. I don't know how long your MBP's graphics will last Tom, but the 8600M GT GPU was highly unreliable, and there were very public lawsuits related to it. I don't think apple is still replacing them for free anymore though. Contact the eBay seller while you still can.

Be careful Tom! 2008 MBPs are an absolute nightmare when it comes to reliability. It doesn't affect all of them, but there are hundreds of dead notebooks out there plagued by dead logic boards... I myself lost my beloved 17" to the bug... 3 times. If you notice the GPU hitting about 70 degrees just browsing the web then you'll know you've got a problem. Just a heads up, thanks.

That issue with the display is a data cable issue. It is fixable but it takes time and is a bit difficult to do. The cables aren't expensive on ebay either.

Nice mac. I have the 17 inch from the same year, 2.5 GHz, 1920x1600, 6 GB of ram, 128 GB Expresscard SSD, 500 GB internal HDD, 512 MB of gram with the same GPU. Mavericks is not as quick as Snow Leopard was. My only problem is messed up internal speakers, they make an ugly background static whenever I play audio through them, but the audio jack works perfectly.

That display problem is your videocard, i had the same problem and after a couple of weeks my macbook died, you can reflow/reball the card

That screen issue is most likely because of shipping. I got my laptop from my uncle in Alaska and the screen had discoloration that later disappeared.

This model isn't the last non unibody mac book pro. There was one more model like this that came out in late 2008, check mac tracker

Awesome! I'm using this same computer as my main machine right now, but I have the 17 inch model. By the way, the graphics on these machines suck, so if you do any intensive video editing, install SMC fan control and turn the fan's RPM up.

A 13" Air would be a more beastly machine (annoyingly). My sisters 11" Air runs rings around my 2010 Core 2 Duo 13" MacBook Pro lol. It's still a great machine, that's just the march of progress I guess.

+BradTheBest I upgraded my macbook pro late 2007 15 inch to an SSD and 4GB ram instead of 2, now runs really smooth on the latest version El Capitan. It's not expensive, 2 GB of DDR2 667 MHz ram is like 15-20 bucks and the SSD was 50. Definetly worth it.

Keep it running cool and it'll be fine, just download SMCfancontrol and keep an eye on the temperature. If it runs too hot just take it apart, remove all the dust and put some fresh thermal compound on the chips, I'm sure you can do that :) I'm using Noctua NT-H1 in my MacBook Pro and it's great.

As others have said I would return it while you can, these MBP's are just too unreliable. I would get a unibody and whack an ssd in.I used to have a mid 09 15" and I loved it, still miss it now even though my MBA is better in nearly every way.

Holy crap. Just received a late 2006 iMac 17" with 4GB of ram and 256MB of VRAM on a Radeon X6100! It's awesome because it has the optional everything, even the HD! Keyboard is acting funny though, can't get shift keys to work at all. Anyone have an idea?

Do NOT buy a 2011 mac book pro (early 2011), because the amd GPU would fail and leave the mac book unusable, or just dead. they usually had a fail updating to Yosemite, and wouldn't be up gradable. OS X El Capitan is just not gonna work.

If it's the GPU that's dead Apple may replace it for free. You're best taking it to them before spending any money on it. They had some issues with the NVIDIA GPU's in the 2008 non-unibody models and I think the replacement programme is still running, assuming that is the issue. If nothing else they'll give you a quote on how much it'll be to fix it lol. You can always say no of course!

Sorry Tom but I think it is a dud :(. The NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor repair extension program ended on December 7, 2012. Tom, Run SMC Fancontrol, bump up the Fan speed to get beter temperatures ! Hold on your temps. dont get them over about 85 degrees or GPU will Die !!
