That’s a good question - I’d probably say mid to late 2000s is when a lot of them transitioned to non-movable wheels. I know some of them had rolling wheels as late as the 2010s though.

Agree there - Matchbox has been dominating with playsets lately. Some leaks of the 2022 sets have already started and they look good too. Hopefully stores will start restocking soon and we’ll be able to start finding them.

i purchase the original matchbox airport, in 1998 which was triple the size,(car goes into the jet) which i still have, this is cool and modern. Its like the private jet version. I will buy.

HAH, I have seen this in Target, and though tempting, I have held off buying for my nephew. I didn't look this closely at it until this video, and OOOOHH, the details are fantastic! The departure voices and the luggage carousel are unique and brilliant features! I had original Lesney Matchbox sets from the 1970s, and though nice, the plastic seemed brittle, not particularly easy to assemble (I am thinking about the Harbor set from about 1981), and not sturdy enough to stay built as intended. Clever, 40 years on, the technology really has allowed designers to produce some remarkably clever stuff, and all the kids from my generation are able to design and build the sets that THEY wanted as kids. Brilliant stuff!!!!

I just bought this today, so glad they made more action drivers playsets because I bought the last three earlier this year, now I've got to find that parking deck playset because that's the only one I'm missing. I just love the more realistic playsets. I hope they do a fast food restaurant, hotel and maybe a mall or supermarket playset next

Hello! I also own an airport and the fire department, but I noticed in your videos that in addition to sounds and lights there is also a voice, a voice that is missing from my sets. Are there multiple versions of them? Are they depending on the year of manufacture or depending on the country? Thank you!

Howdy! There are two versions of sounds for each set - one for North America with the English speaking prompts, and the international version that is the same except they don’t have the voice prompts. This is done because it’s cheaper to remove the voice prompts than translate new prompts for every country they ship too…but I probably would have just left them in as English is pretty common around the various parts of the world.

While it doesn’t fold for transport, it does come apart quite easy. So you could split the playset up quickly and re-assembly fairly easily if you needed to store it or move it.

Happy to help! Technically all Hot Wheels and Matchbox sets with the same base style from 2020 and up will connect. Currently there are 10 Action Drivers sets made specifically to connect, so you could make a pretty big playset connecting them all.

No, the planes all have fixed plastic wheels that don’t spin. Some of the older Skybusters do have wheels that spin though!

@@selcuktamer5610 Oh, I believe you're referring to the plastic piece you can see at 3:55 ? It's a factory hold down for some of the pieces to keep them in place during shipping. It pops off when removing the parts behind it, and then you throw it away bc it's no longer needed.

Damn, this was so cool, I've only recently found some of the action driver stuff which I'm using with old Legends Class Transformers so I've been enjoying your vids to see what else is out there. :) I dunno if its a thing there, cause its not here in NZ but I wish they sold road tracks that fit the same style as the action driver plates so I could have 2 lane roads going along my shelf space, the added bonus being the matchbox plates don't have the rails like Hot Wheels so slightly larger Transformer vehicle modes get the extra width to use.

Thanks! These sets are great - that’s cool they fit the Transformers too. The need for extendable two lane roads is apparently a global issue as they don’t sell the add-one here in the states either. Maybe if we tag Mattel enough on social media and beg them that they’ll make it happen ha!

The runway might be a little short in comparison to the size of a 1/400 plane, but you could “taxi” one or two 1/400 planes on the rear tarmac area.

Did you buy your set in the United States or Canada? If it’s an international set it may have different sounds…that’s the only reason I could think it might not have the correct sounds?

@Random-seal so that’s probably why - because you’re in Finland, they can’t translate all the toys voice commands to the various languages, so a lot of times sets that are sold in countries (or online to the various countries) will have slightly different sound/voice commands due to the language differences. That would be my best guess as to why it’s missing the talking parts.

Hello @64wheels I bought this set but its different! Please check the European version because the roads all around are not “connectable” with others..!! So strange! And stupid! Anyone else noticed this?

Hi! That is how all of the airports are, even the US versions. For some reason when Matchbox designed the first few sets, they spaced the connections out a bit differently than they do now. This causes connection issues between the early sets and the later sets. They can all be connected but the airport and earlier sets need to go together. If you check my KZbin shorts I have a video showing the all the sets up to the Volcano connected exactly how Matchbox has them connected in marketing photos. I also will be coming a big video sometime soon showing all the sets and connecting them together.

They released the airport twice, once in this version and then a second with two other sets and more planes. The fire station they’ve only done once, but I’m hoping if we don’t see brand new sets in 2025, we see recolors of the fire station and some other sets.

I’ve learned that the sounds can vary depending on where you bought the set around the world. If you got one of the North American sets, you’ll have English speaking sounds. If you bought an international version or a set from outside of the US, then your set maybe missing the voice sounds since English may not be the preferred language where the set originated from.

The packaging isn’t bad but I like when the whole set is boxed rather than a part of it sticking out like some of the Action Drivers do. Makes them a little hard to store too
