Hi Bob.! Great video and congrats on the shoes.! Ashley remains the greatest.! I bought my first pair of shell from her years back.! That being said, shell IS denser and firmer and as such does not give and stretch as much as calf during the lasting and gives one a pinch more room in my experience. I'd say almost a half a width. Makes for greater comfort IMO. I have been using those butterfly shaped heel pads for a while both when I need a snug fit, and also when my heels are a bit too tight and cut into my ankles in some lasts, they work great as cushions as well as fillers. Stay well.

Color 8 cowhide darkens over time into an eggplant color. Shell #8 on the other hand lightens into those beautiful colors you see in the sunlight.

Interesting! How do your shell shoes fit compared to the calfskin equivalent?

Beautiful pair. Venetian Shoe Cream is what Horween uses on their shell cordovan before it leaves the tannery and what Nick Horween recommends for conditioning. Afterwards lots of brushing with a horsehair brush brings out the natural shine - I agree that it is preferable to not mirror shine shell.

I am dying to find out how these fit compared to calf. I generally get a width thinner for Shell.

Compared to my McNeil’s in the same size in calfskin, there’s a noticeable increase in room around my heel, and a little more space around my right pinky toe. I like the space around the ball of my foot, but the extra space around the heel is not ideal. I actually have another video in a couple weeks where I install heel liner pads to tighten it up. So based on my one experience, it does seem that they fit a little looser than calfskin.
