One quick comment. As I was editing this together I noticed that this black version is very reflective. So that's something I'll be looking at more when I get to the final review. Especially how it might compare to other glossy black watches.

The new Orient Star diver is just beautiful! I own an Orient Star Sports Outdoor pvd w/ grey dial and it's a keeper... absolutely bulletproof! I'm very impressed with the brand and have wanted one of their dive watches. However well executed, the 43mm size of the other OS diver has kept me from purchasing one. My Seiko Williard and Monster already fill the larger diver slots in my collection. The LE version of the OS 1964 is nice but is too much like the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf 53 Skin that I already own. I really love the classic monochrome look of this piece, it has a refined elegance to it. The finishing looks beautiful and the 41mm size is just about perfect. I've been eyeballing the black-dialed Longines Hydroconquest 41mm and this looks like a very attractive alternative. I look forward to your full review, thanks!

Looks good, Shane. But I couldn't see the power reserve hand,... Was it the lighting?
@RelativeTime2 жыл бұрын
It's the lighting. It's a very thin silver hand, so it was just reflecting the darkroom back at the camera. In normal lighting conditions is easier to pick up. One interesting thing is that this is the first Orient Star I've seen where the power reserve wasn't recessed with a grooved texture. It's just printed directly on the glossy black mirror dial, making it much more subtle.

Really pretty watch but the price might be a bit high. Citizen just released the titanium fujitsubo diver with very similar styling and specs and that costs around 700 dolars with the bracelet. This watch sits right in the middle of the newly released citizen and the seiko 62mas reissue. That's a very classy looking diver, def. has a Seiko vibe to it. I'm not a fan of the power reserve though, seems to be a pretty common Orient Star feature?
@RelativeTime2 жыл бұрын
At this point the power reserve is a "signature feature" for Orient Star. They seem to be commited to it, as it seperates them from most other watches in the same price range. Or at the very least it gives them something different from their Seiko cousins.

I'm considering picking up this watch in turquoise (I think they call it "pond"). But also the Seiko Glacier MMR looks amazing too. Which do you think is a higher quality watch?
@RelativeTime2 жыл бұрын
Eventually, I'll do a comparison video, but it will be a while out. That said... They are close, but I think the Seiko has a slight edge in terms of quality. Especially with the case and bracelet having Seiko's Diashield coating applied. Personally, I like the MMR's case design better, as well as the handset. The Orient's are a tad flat. Plus you have 70hrs of power over 50. Although there are some things the Orient does better. Better lume. More comfortable thanks to a smaller case. As well as the Power Reserve meter, which the Seiko doesn't have at all.
@michaelglinessoundmixer82502 жыл бұрын

Orient Star is the higher-up brand of Orient. Kind of like Grand Seiko is for Seiko, but not near the same quality level as that. Technically they are separate companies. With Seiko Watches is owned by The Seiko Holdings Corporation, and Orient Is owned by The Seiko Epson Corporation. But they are connected overall by the larger Seiko Group. @RelativeTime2 жыл бұрын
For years I've thought of the Submariner as the 1911 of the watch world. It's an older iconic classic that multiple companies took inspiration from and have made their own versions of. To the point, you could almost say a Subby is a type of dive watch and not just a single watch. Just like with the 1911. Colt is the one that created it, but these days most companies have their own versions of it. So if someone says they have a 1911, you know what kind it is, but you usually ask what brand.

IMHO, the RE-AU0602E has the much better dial colour. =quote=This green version is is a matte green dial with a matching matte green bezel surface. The green gradation on the dial is inspired by the Ryusendo Cave in Iwate Prefecture, Japan, thought by some to be the most beautiful and mysterious limestone cavern in the world. This model reflects the spirit of the divers who dive deep into the underground lakes to survey the cave and unlock its mysteries.=unquote=

Huh, I feel that could be a $400 Vostok if Vostok ever decided to make a $400 model. It's because of the bracelet style, and how it's so distinctly -roughly- contrastfully fitted, the unconventional retro looking dial, where also everything is printed, the simple, no nonsense knurling on the crown also, the bezel insert also, it just being a bit understated. And I'm not saying that to diss either of these brands. Vostok has its own charme and place in the watch world.

Hey sean. Can you answer my question please. I really want this dive watch. I have a offer to trade in a watch towards getting this dive watch from orient. I have the orient star heritage white dial. Is this dive watch worth trading in my star dress watch?. I really like an adore my heritage. But at the same time i really want this flagship dive watch from orient. What are your thoughts?.
@RelativeTime Жыл бұрын
That's maybe a tricky decision. Short version though, if you adore your heritage, don't trade it in. Or at least I wouldn't. I'm still a few weeks out from a full review. I've worn it enough that I know what I'm going to say, but I have other videos I have to do first, like Lume-O-Ween. The 1964 is good, the black dial is extremely refelctive, but overall it's a good watch. Lume is good, the build is good, and the power reserve is very subtle so it has a very clean look. So it's good for someone who wants a dressy diver, something a bit retro. Or someone who may want a Submariner that isn't an homage. Where things get complicated is in terms of value. Typically with Orient and Orient Star, every watch I see punches way above its price. Where I feel like it could stand on its own against watches that cost 2x as much. This is the first time I've had one that I don't feel that way. Comparing it to my Seiko MMR (which has about the same MSRP), id say they are about the same in terms of value. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses, but value they are on par. So the 1964 is still an ok buy, but it's not what you typically expect from the brand. Or at least that's how I feel. Anyway... long story short it's good, but I wouldn't risk trading something you absolutely love for it. Hope that helps. Feel free to ask me any more questions.

i dislike the approx. 2 year ago release of this newer orient diver (should be same as your video here that pepsi bezel one) since it has too many roundish design markers on BOTH the bezel and dial ; and at 43mm it is abit too LARGE to be a daily wear piece , of course for professional diver , larger at 42 to 45mm is nothing wrong functional wise . the newer editions with more regular rectangular markers looks much better , especially this smaller case width one discussed here.
