In today's video I thought I'd let you know where I get my feeder insects from as well as unboxing them and setting them up in their new 'enclosures'. Caring for insectivores means generally you have to take good care of their food too. Don't underestimate the power of gut loading, it makes a massive difference :)

Hey, i am REALLY considering buying a leopard gecko but need to convince my parents. I just wanted to ask, can you feed a leopard gecko on just live meal worms or is it a necessity to feed them crickets as well or is it optional? If you can reply that would be great! :D

Feeding geckos is like death row for the food The insect is transferred to a new cage, given a last meal, then they get executed by the gecko
@roseicapilla2244

The mealworms come in wheat bran. It is a cheap and readily available substrate that doubles as a food source. The reason that the Morio worms take so long to pupate is because they will only pupate when isolated from other larvae.

The tiny darkling beetles are buffalo beetles, they dont eat a lot of decaying crickets, more so they eat the fass (droppings). There are also dermestid beetles and larvae which are flesh eating worms and beetles and they are great to have in any insect colony.

@seeyataliya7578
@seeyataliya7578 6 жыл бұрын
Leopard Gecko you do, when in groups they are competitive for food. The way I think is easiest to breed them is get a tackle box with the separators put a single worm in each compartment and leave them there in a dark area for a few weeks. Not feeding them is the best way for them to pupate quicker. Once they turn into beetles you can then House the beetles together and feed them (carrots and such) and they will breed and die within a month or so
@andy-pandy969
@andy-pandy969 6 жыл бұрын
Leopard Gecko yes, leaving them in a container with no food works well, but the pupae tend to be messed up and bad. My way, they can get extra nutrients during their time in there and the eco earth helps keep it natural. This way, most of the pupae are fine and healthy. You can make a video with this method of breeding. Thanks! I love your channel, keep doing what you are doing! 😝

For my mealworms and crickets, I used to use ground up dried beans (a variety of types, including dried peas), oats, potato flakes, and bran for their substrate. I didn't ever look into the different amounts of acid, I just figured the biggest variety for them to eat would be better. I'd give them fresh veggies, but would pull the leftovers out after an hour or so to keep mold issues away. The last leo died at age 9, so the beans didn't seem to harm them. I'm glad to see more science going into the feeder insects diets now, and will look into it more if I decide to get a new leo.

Morio worms (superworms) do pupate fastest on their own. What I did was take a 6qt Tupperware and put a few tiny deli cups inside. I placed one worm in each cup and left them alone on a shelf. No food, and the lack of companions stresses them into pupating. I got several beetles with this method.

This was a great video!! I’m always eager to learn more about feeder insects as sadly it’s a bit of an ignored topic for some people. Have you considered using a three drawer system for your mealworms? In the system, the beetles stay up top, eggs fall through a net (cut a hole in the drawer and glue one in) and into the middle drawer, and then you pick out the pupae and put them into the bottom drawer. I’ve found that this works great but I’ve actually seen you use it. I highly recommend breeding mealworms this way!
@goldpieceleo
@goldpieceleo 6 жыл бұрын
Not, really. There's a lot of wrong things about this video. I breed 5 different kinds of feeder insects. Dubia, lateralis, golden crickets, mealworms and superworms. 1st the worst thing about this video is using wood shaving, you should never use wood shaving to mealworms and superworm, petshops use it because most them don't know how to care for them and some use it because they don't want you to learn how to breed mealworms or superworms so you will constantly buy from them. Second superworm only pupate when they got isolated because the other superworms will eat it when it turned into a pupa, there are rare cases that they do pupate but very rare. 3rd silent crickets are only juvenile crickets. 4th you should put your feeder insects in a much bigger enclosure that is well ventilated. Lastly crickets need a lot of hides and space to keep them from killing each other. If you got successful on raising your own feeder insects you will almost never buy insect feeders again, maybe just a few every now and then just to introduce new bloodline to keep their genetic healthy.

I just upgraded my cricket enclosure from one of those little critter keepers to a decent sized tub with lid. Poked a bunch of holes in the lid, laid down some aspen, egg crate, and set the crickets free in their new home (before being sent to their impending doom lol). In some strange way, it actually made me really happy seeing them with all that space to hopefully enjoy their life for a bit....

Alfredo Wh reptile shows sell a ton of second hand stuff. Just don't do that to much with the wood pieces. But the resin designed decor and tanks can be up to 70% cheaper than the stores. Another one is the wish app I found has select over stock of a lot of fish/reptile stuff. If it's safe for fish it's amphibian safe which in turn is lizard safe when it comes to decor.

If it is available in your area and you want to save a little money use wheat bran from a livestock feed store instead of wood shavings for your meal worms. In the U.S. alot of our pre-packed meal worms and morio worms come packed in bran for substrate and food. I have bred my own meal worms for the last 5 or 6 years using wheat bran and have had no issues at all. Thanks for the vid.

Good luck with the beetles they turn into. I had started with 150 small mealworms for my two beardies next thing I knew I had 1,000 of them and had to feed lots of them to the two gluttons. When I thought I finally had it under control I found several thousand more beetles. I used the three tier shelf like design and thank god my fish were able to eat them because the arrowanna and electric catfish loved the beetles at 6 per week each fish. The Oscars and red devil's looked the beetles as a appetizer and still demanded more food.

I don't think the substrate they come with is wood shavings. I am not sure about the place you buy feeders particularly, but the substrate is usually a mix of different types of flours and similar materials, with the main ingredient being wheat bran if not only wheat bran, which I think the one in the video is.

I feed mine with locust, not crickets. And I small tip, it's better to use water crystals, you can literally make that bug gel tube out of one teaspoon of those crystals and they're still cheap
