I feel for you.... Your being way too magnanimous about the quality. What is utterly clear is that it has taken the shine off what should be a fantastic experience. I own a Gibson SG standard .it's a 2010...I paid £600 for it used with a proper Gibson hardcase....and in my opinion that's what it's worth ..not a penny more. I am happy luthering and have done many alterations, fret jobs, paint jobs in my time and I reckon I need to spend about 5 hours on mine to make it the quality I feel it should be. 1800 dollars is still a significant amount of money and it annoys me that the price point on all the standards has lifted so much over the recent years...and I think this is a deliberate play on Gibson's part which has become accepted by us consumers because of the whole custom shop /Murphy labs, imo, rip off prices. Normalising high prices for low value items and trading on a brand name....I actually heard someone say about a Les Paul the other day.."it's only £3200"..yeah well it should only be £2000 and that's being generous.....well a fool and their money are easily parted...I can never see me owning another Gibson...on a recent visit to my local guitar shop I played a natural es 335. It was £3500.00 and it was nice...BUT....I then played a Larry Carlton Sire 335 with p90s and it just blew it away... The Gibson had more premium woods and nitro, but everything else about the Sire was better...especially the feel and tone... And it was £560.00. I don't consider the Sire to be a budget guitar...just a brilliant guitar.... While people put up with the crap Gibson are handing out without complaining the longer it will go on. Truth be told if I were in your shoes I would be onto zzounds to come and pick it up... I know you can fix it...but why should you...your time is valuable and it is supposed to be a premium product.

There's a video of this somewhere on KZbin, but it talks about the cost of Gibsons today vs the 50s and 60s. Adjusted for inflation, they are essentially the same price as they were. They were always expensive. I remember buying my new Tele in 1976. I really wanted a Strat, but they were more expensive back then and the Tele was already expensive for me. Gibsons? Forget about it. No way I could afford one back then. The Murphy Shop guitars are where you're spending the big money.

Same story here: I have a genuine Gibson Melody Maker and a Chibson Melody Maker. The logo was off-centre on the Chibson (I corrected that), the headstock was the wrong shape (I corrected that too), it had some other things about it which were a bit off, such as the Melody Maker text not being on the scratch plate (I corrected that too). So now the Chibson looks pretty much like a genuine Melody Maker, which it's true involved a fair bit of effort on my part but since the Chibson was less than £200, I was not afraid to 'have at it' with my tools and in any case I like doing that kind of stuff. So now I doubt anyone would know it wasn't a genuine Gibson unless they checked the serial number it has on it (although even that is actually a correct number for the model), but whether I had done all that or not, it still would have been a better guitar to play than my genuine Gibson Melody Maker; the Gibson is just not as nice to play as the Chinese knock off copy is.

i purchased one of the early les paul chibsons back in 2007, stripped out the electrics and pickups, the pickups had epiphone stamped on the backs of them, i replaced them with gibson humbuckers, within 5 years the pots started playing up, the dusty pot sound, guitar still looks great and plays superb. At the same time i went into dawsons music here in uk...all the gibsons were trash, had the electric tuners on, high action, finish flaws, loose pots and selectors, and everyone knows they all sold to people who bought the name only

A long time ago I was discussing the price hikes of Gibson here in Britain with my local small music shop manager. Gibson was claiming the exchange rate (strangely pound sterling was high against the dollar), but he personally suspected it was because Gibson had seen what PRS was charging. He said at least Gibson was finally profiling the frets and not just leaving the crown flat after levelling!

Awesome review! Unfortunately I had the same experience with a 70's Gibson Explorer a couple of months ago. I sold my 1992 Explorer for a ridiculously low price and had regretted it ever since. So I've had a hole in my heart for it since then. So fast forward to a couple months ago, I paid $2400 fill in that hole and waited with grand anticipation. The blessed day arrived and I received it in the mail. But the guitar that I received left me feeling kind of depressed. It had poor tonal qualities, there were several finish flaws (like yours), and I'm not sure what happened with the nut but the high E string was on the edge of the fretboard to the point that the first three frets were unplayable without the string coming off of the fret and fret nib. Keep in mind that I paid $2400 for this thing. So if you're thinking that plopping down $2K-3K provides some assurance that you're getting a product that has $2400 worth of quality, you are (likely) mistaken because it doesn't, necessarily with Gibson. I contrast that with paying ~$300-$350 but having to put in some work to get a finished product that holds it's own compared to a Gibson.

OOOOO you should have seen the 3 I bought during the sell off when the bankruptcy was going on. All 3 had production, sigh off dates 18 months before I bought them. Warehoused unsold for 18 months. No wonder they had cash flow problems. All 3 had issues out of the box but sighed off with the baby picture. One was "setup" so bad the strings were touching the bridge pickup. Ridiculous! Now I did buy them at 1/2 the retail price at the time and I did sort them out. But my opinion of Gibson was very low and went lower after the "Authentic" fiasco. I have not bought a Gibson since. Maybe if they go half price again...:)

My '08 American Standard Fender was $1200 if I'm remembering correctly and it came not only flawlessly set up and finished, but with an SKS hard case and a really nice strap. When I was shopping around almost every Gibson I played FELT like a $2k+ instrument. I can not imagine spending thousands of dollars on a guitar and having it come in a soft case.

Nice review. I think that down the road the Gibsons turn into heirlooms and otherwise increase in value over time. The imports don't have that kind of thing going on. There's nothing wrong with selecting what fits for a person. But ..... come back in 20 years. The import isn't going to fetch the same kind of money. Of course, any guitar is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. but...No one's looking for a vintage '74 Hondo replica. Gibson as a company now , is just riding on a name ! I’m a Gibson loyalist I own Gibson instruments costing 4 figures . But it’s a shame when someone else can do better at what you do best . And this isn’t the first time this has happened. They dropped the ball before in the 70’s . If you bought an instrument say around 1978 you probably got what was the worst quality instrument Gibson was ever making in there history. And I’m sure Orville Gibson was rolling in his grave ! They were bought out by a couple of guys then that set out to recreate the quality that had been the trademark of the company. You should read the book 100 years of Gibson . It not only tells the history of how Gibson set out to make a better Mandolin that became the Stradivarius of its time , but it’s also a story of a conglomerate and how businesses really operate and survive. But I’m glad to see companies that have long been belittled and ignored setting the new standard . Hey the guy that invented the wheel may have changed human history , but the guys building wheels today are blowing him away .

I have a Les Paul studio in Midnight Manhattan that came with that strap.. it’s laughably bad. I was lucky that it came with the brown case, and to the cases credit, it’s pretty nice for a soft shell. The guitar itself is what you’d expect for a $1700 Gibson. Mine didn’t have any finish burns, but it had the polishing compound in the crevices. With all that being said, I still play my Epiphone traditional pro IV as often as the Gibson. Dollar for dollar, my Epiphone plays as nicely as the Gibson in my opinion.

You're a better man than me. I would have asked for a replacement. I didn't catch where you bought it. I 'usually' but all my online guitars from Sweetwater. Presumably, with their inspection, your odds 'might' be better that they would have caught the blems and sold it at a discount as they'll do. Like all the big box retailers, they won't hesitate to exchange it, or accept the return. The odds are that you won't get two with flaws. I bought three Gibsons in '19 and '20. Two of them had not a blem to be seen. Perfect setups on all three. At the QC benches, you can see the cameras mounted directly overhead. You can be assured that they're taking pics of the actual guitar. With respect to the third one - Sweetwater noted the blem and were knocking off a few hundred dollars because of said blem. I was able to have my rep (Andy Hoye) get me the details of the blem. It was a polishing issue around the p/u selector,so I pulled the trigger on it. It's a black Les Paul Classic. I got it, noted the kind of 'orange peel' issue it had. I used my go-to solution and used my Mother's metal polish on the area and after just a few minutes, got it looking 100%. Simple as that. I'll accepts blems under two circumstances - both where they're disclosed. One on a used guitar, and the other on a new guitar that's discounted accordingly. Right now, I'm pondering which guitars I'm going to sell in order to fund the best of the best, a Collings!

Thanks for this video. It clarified a lot for me. An electric guitar is a wood guitar with electronics and hardware. The electronics and hardware can be completely replaced, the guitar itself is the essence. Seeing the quality of yours I took a chance on one of these with a one piece mahogany body and mahogany neck. The guitar I received was 10/10. The wood is super resonant and the construction and finish are flawless. The neck feels custom made for me. The hardware and electronics, as expected were 2/10. It still sounds surprisingly good. The instrument itself is super lively so it has a nice beefy SG sound. But you just assume going in that you're going to replace all the electronics and hardware. Which you can do well and inexpensively. I found 2010 SG standard Grovers on ebay for $20. And a both Grover tailpieces for $50 more. The Grover tuners literally weigh twice what the Chinese tuners weigh despite being slightly smaller. So its a substantial upgrade in quality for not much money. I traded some spare parts for a complete Gibson controls from a 2008 SG. And I have some special custom pickups coming that I basically got at the builders cost. For maybe $400 all in, it will rival any $1600-1800 SG out there. At the end of the day the magic of the Chibson is finding good wood and craftsmanship. Research this first and primarily. Look for 1 piece bodies where possible. Look for the woods best suited for the guitar and sound you want. If you get that right you can have a premium quality instrument for not much money.

Its called the law of diminishing returns. Idiot guitarists will keep paying over the odds because they are blinded by the Gibson Logo and the spending Gibson undertakes on PR setting out their guitars as high end products. Its the same in the watch world with Rolex. Standard Gibson models are production line guitars made by CNC machines just like any other maker, its not until you get to the the Custom shop that you could start to call them handmade. Is it really worth paying 6 times more for a Gibson Logo and made in USA badge? Downside with the Chibson is that by upgrading it might get you close to the standard of the Gibson but you will never get any of that money back because you cant sell it.

Seeing the Gibson and going off of what others have said, I don’t think I would drop that much on a guitar with that kind of reputation. I have 26 guitars and not one is a Gibson. They range from 2,700 to 120 dollars. About half of them are Chinese knockoffs and some are kit builds, they almost always need a setup to dial them in but play great after that. I enjoy tinkering with them but a new player would have problems getting a decent quality guitar. It’s always best if you can go to a guitar shop or pawnshop for that matter and actually hold it and see for yourself.

I just got a chibson a few days back build quality surpassed 99% of guitars ive owned. Ive had American fenders and gibsons. I'm 43 and I build guitars and this thing is SOLID.

@FultonStreetBeats I bought the gibson sg 61 in translucent teal. It is supposed to come with a Gibson Hardcastle. QC is so bad they sent it with a gig bag. I contacted them and they send the Hardcastle. For 2k you should get an excellent guitar with a hardcase.

They're most likely not the same woods. Gibson used to use Honduran Mahogany which is considered the only "true" mahogany. That tree is endangered and protected now. Gibson then switched to African Mahogany which is a completely different tree. Most Asian-made guitars are Eastern Mahogany which again is a completely different tree. Any reddish-brown hardwood is called mahogany.
@FultonStreetBeats Жыл бұрын
Luckily, the best thing about all of these types of mahogany is that it's virtually impossible to tell what they are with a guitar build. All work very well and serve the purpose.
@OddTimeMan Жыл бұрын
@@FultonStreetBeats One way to tell is where it's made. If it's an Asian-made guitar, it's most likely Eastern Mahogany (a.k.a. Nato). Also, the weight of the guitar is one way to tell. When Gibson used Honduran Mahogany, Les Pauls weren't known to be that heavy. When they switched to African Mahogany in the late '60s, people noticed right away that they were much heavier. That's why Gibson started weight-relieving the bodies with holes and then eventually chambering the bodies. Yes, the different mahoganies work well and serve their purpose, but a lot of people think they're all the same.

As someone who works in manufacturing I can say through personal experience that too many of the younger generation of workers just don't take pride in their work. To many its just a job and they only put forth enough effort to not get fired and these days the standards to maintain employment are pretty low. This isn't a problem specific to Gibson or with the population of workers around the factory location, this is just the reality of manufacturing in the US.

I've owned Gibsoms and I have a few Epiphones after set ups they sounded very close the Epi has alpha pots I have zero issues with them my first Gibson was the basic bare bones in worn brown,yawn so I sold it after a couple of years o had to buy the hard case from Gibson as well as the Epi all in if the imports you buy are any thing they are building better copies as time goes by

I just suddenly wondered if, well, the flaws are the point? It’s a Gibson, sorta handmade, individual…idk…just riffing… This is why I buy Chibson and upgrade a bit.

I've always wanted the Iommi SG also. I had the 1k dollar Epiphone Monkey version. It was nice. But still, a thousand dollars seems steep to me. Let us know what you think when it arrives. Thanks for watching.

OK, I’m a Fender guy, have never owned a Gibson, but I’ve heard their QC is really lacking these days. Given hat I hear that on Fender Telecaster forums, I try to take it with a grain of salt. But I’ve got to tell you, the blemishes and caked on buffing compound that you’re pointing out are unacceptable and embarrasing. By comparison, around 20 years ago, I had the urge to own a Les Paul, so I bought a new Black Epiphone LP Classic from the Dallas Guitar center. I played several to hand pick what I felt was the best on their wall. Then I bartered with the kid working there, for about an hour and eventually got him down to $150 plus tax. Seriously. And, I’m also serious when I tell you, with the exception of the nut being cut a tad shorter than the width of the nut slot, that new, black $150 Epiphone did not have ANY of the QC issues your $1800 SG has. Crazy.

Not sending it back is why Gibson continue to get away with this sub standard Build quality/QC. I bought a Les Paul Jnr for Christmas, bucket list guitar for me personally and couldn’t believe the factory let it out the door, similar finish issues, but the pick up didn’t even work, wiring was fine just a dud P90! Not acceptable, sent it back for a full refund. However it was a blessing, I ended up buying an Eastman SB55v after watching some reviews, and wow! Custom shop level of finish, higher quality parts and that lollar P90 is phenomenal, even the Hard case is a thing of beauty. Gibson need to wtf up, The Chinese have some first class Luthiers and workers that have pride in what they are producing…
@endoffate547510 ай бұрын
These finish blemmishes are unbelievable.. I own an all black Jackson and it had none of these issues in the finish, so thats not an excuse. Its been said a million times but you are paying for the name when buying a Gibson or a Martin. At this point theres so many great/cheap options outhere that theres no point in buying these super expenssive instruments.

The Epiphone SG ‘61 Elitist I have has a better finish and QC than that Gibson. What a shame. I’d return that considering how much they are.

ive got two gibson les pauls tribute from diferant years both came with sharp fret ends the tuners on the 2016 mosel were good but the 2017 tuners were rubis in less than six months there was play in them i got a replacement set from gibson and there were just as bad . fast forwar to 2023 i checked out a tribute model in a local store and the fret ends were still shart on a £1,200 guitar this is not exseptable its time we all stoped worshiping this brand they simply dont deserve it there living on there past reputation from the 1960s and befor when they were something special if it was not for the fact there pickups are superb and the original desighns {angin that were dome many year ago } they would have nothing going for them at all there just living on there past reputation

Gibson and Fender are cashing in on boomer and gen x emotions for these guitars I refuse to comply. Chibson it is!
@billvrtis10095 ай бұрын
I think these instruments, because of the price, pretty much live forever and MANY different aftermarket hands touch these guitars. If someone's in the market for a gibson I'd always recommend a used one that's at least 20 years old. That way it's already likely had multiple setups and probably a fretjob. You're sure to get a well broken in super solid instrument. Go into ANY guitar store, the used gibsons will always play better than the new ones.

I actually surprised you wouldn't sent that Gibson back. That was in horrible condition. I had a similar experience with a Les Paul from MF and then realized they were sending out returns as new. If you complain, and request "from the warehouse", you'll get an actual new guitar. That's when I quit buying from them and GC. Their "we'll send what we want" policy is a dealbreaker.
@WindRider1 Жыл бұрын
No way would I have kept that guitar. I bought a LP from Sweetwater and the fit and finish was so bad, I boxed it back up immediately. The fret board over hung the edges of the neck so far you could hang your fingernails on it. Gibson needs to know the quality leaving the factory. If you keep it, they will never know.
@FultonStreetBeats Жыл бұрын
They definitely know. However, they turn a blind eye. I put 14 hrs of nitro correction into it and sent it on its way. Until quality is back up across the board at Gibson. I'm out for a while.

I'm personally not against getting a Gibson, what I'm against is the price they charge for literally the same guitar, does it really matter what kind of wood they use on a guitar that's completely painted anyway, how does one know if the same wood that is sourced for a budget guitar, isn't the same wood that Gibson is using,you basically don't and most likely never will, so your paying for 3 pieces of wood and some hardware, and your hoping it has a nice finish, I seriously think Gibson has priced theirself right out of the market, and they have made the budget buyers mad by going after copycats and headstock designs, that's not a winning formula for the company, if your simply the best then start acting like it, QC is number one, on the long list of changes needed to fix their reputation,I'm not sure they can ever recover.
@curtjohansen5742 Жыл бұрын
Qc is a thing of the past,, way past for Gibson. They can find out exactly what employees built and let that guitar out of the factory and fire all of them. If Gibson wants to keep customers they can't let another guitar out of the factory like that. Firing people will send a message to the employees that will make them up their workmanship. Gibson should know this by now,

Ive just bought a 2009 Gibson les paul for £1200 and its in a lot better condition than your sg. That is pretty shameful for Gibson 😳😳 i would definitely send it back with photos of the Chibson. I would also email Gibson customer support too. That is an American product being beaten by a chinese one, someone at Gibson has to be bothered by this including every one of the shop floor employees. Is there no pride in craftsmanship anymore? This is what happened over here and nowadays a made/built in England tag means nothing apart from its more expensive and thats if you can find something made in England. Oh we have heinz beans they are still English and great quality 😁👍
