Wow, cant thank you enough man, I'll make sure that top goes on a special guitar with all the inspiration it carries for me! Also the woods in this unboxing have to be some of my favourits from your channel so far, I always love and prefere ''non standart'' exciting woods with a great story such as some of the sinker stuff you got here, just awesome - cant wait to see what you do with them! Again thanks so much for everything and all the best man :)

Great episode - always love seeing these beautiful woods! Most are usually new to me, but you had several from my stomping grounds (Texas)! I'd love a Sinker Sycamore over Osage Orange!! And FANTASTIC that the grand winner is a new luthier, just starting out!!!

Great video as ever, Tom, thank you. You asked "what am I seeing?" regarding the 'hold on to your pants'/male cocobolo - well, it reminds me of an Edvard Munch painting! Also, the osage orange looks interestingly vibrant now but I've heard that it turns from that hue into a duller brown in a relatively short time (apparently).

I just discovered your tonewood videos. Bravo well done! I used to live on a farm in Virginia with Osage Orange trees, and when those "balls" would drop.......um they will give you a good bonk (and yes I'm being serious). As for the male Cocobolo, I'm just wondering how big a guitar you would have to make to get the whole picture on the back so to speak. Seems a shame to miss part of it.

Tom, first off, I love your videos. Especially the tonewood videos. You asked us to tell you which wood we'd like you to do a deep dive on. I grew up in Iowa using Osage Orange to make wooden swords and the like. My great grandfather put osage orange fence posts into the ground that are there to this day. The wood is special to me for so many reasons, and if I ever had the money, I'd have an Osage Orange guitar. I'd love to see a video about this wood.

I love the variety you've just received. I hope you have fun building with all of them. Seeing the T'Zalam sets makes me think about re-purposing a quartered, curly T'Zalam board I've had for a number of years and sawing it into sets. Also, are you sure that the Male Cocobolo set is in fact male? It has a feminine look to it for some reason...😉 Oh, and congratulations to the three winners!

Don't like the white ebony. Vertical grain sycamore is beautiful. The canary wood had the most ring. Amazon rosewood is stunning. The show stopper is the figured male coco bolo! So special. What a fun video, thanks so much.

What the hell, that's his first try at making a guitar?! Amazing.. One question - could you make a classical guitar with some of these more exotic types used for the top? Or would it just sound crap compared to the usual spruce or cedar?
@TomSandsGuitars Жыл бұрын
It’s a lovely thing! Ideally you want something lightweight and stiff for the top, so exotics are not really suitable

Feel spruced up just hearing about the winners. Having just returned from having a look and play of the USA made Epiphone Texan and Gibson guitars it actually gave me more appreciation for sheer build quality of my Brook Taw. The difference between a factory made guitar to a hand built guitar was so noticeable particularly on the fretboard imo

What do you mean, what's in the male cocobolOH MAN, I just understood the thumbnail. And I wouldn't overlook that pignut hickory; while it's not a showstopper like some of the others, it'll make a fine guitar for someone wanting a more subtle design. As for videos, I couldn't choose between all of these, although a comparison between spalted and non-spalted examples could be very informative, if you now have enough. (And red maple is _Acer rubrum_ .)

You've got it all going on. Maybe wood porn will get you to 5M subs. 😉 I've mentioned this before but you should check out Alaskan yellow cedar. I really like it for tops and it can be milled quite thin. That can make for some great dynamics especially on smaller body guitars.

I absolutely love you and your videos, man, but how DARE you show us that stringed instrument with the rare woods we've seen and heard about but not even pluck a string to give us a sound!! 😭 Most of us will never in our lives get to hear how those woods resonate together or the tone they carry in a real instrument. Here you've not only been sent the guitar, but invited to show it, you hold it up for us to see, and then slap us violently in the face by puting it back down without a sound. That's just cruel, brother!!
