Very nice looking watch - the semi-covered bezel is a nice feature. I did some diving in the military in the late 1970's and was issued with a Heuer on a nylon strap. It was mechanical (self-winding) and rated to 1000ft. It said 'Professional' on the dial but I don't know what model it was. It was all black (probably steel - painted) with screw down crown which was a brass alloy (because the paint wore off after 20 years use). It had luminous dot markers, hands and numbers on the bezel - and it was easy to read in low visibility. It never failed after more than 2000 dives - varying in duration from 5+ hours in shallow water - clearing obstructions, surveying, reconnaissance and recovery, and later, as a commercial diver, up to depths of 500ft with mixed gasses - non-destructive testing of submarine structures, cutting, welding and salvage. In the days before reliable dive computers, a watch and depth gauge were all one had to avoid decompression problems. When I took up sport diving, in the 1980's many divers wore a Seiko (usually with an orange face). I did see one or two with misted glass but I think they were reliable - although I thought the orange face was harder to read. The Heuer was stolen from my hotel room in Paris in 1998 and I've often wondered who has it now and whether they know what it's been through. That would be my nominee as 'best dive watch'. Now I wear a Bremont Supermarine.

Gavin Thomas I’m so sorry that it was stolen. That watch is incredibly valuable - more than they know

Gavin Thomas I think I have found the model number of the watch you owned. Here is the reference: Vintage Heuer 1000 980.026. I hope u see this I did a quick google search of what you described and then found one that matched your description, then I found the serial number and googled the reference to make sure.

Shit that deserves a thank you! Hope Gavin just hasn’t seen this comment and didn’t just ignore or simply ’like’ considering you took the time to read his story and find out all that info. Shame on Gavin if he saw this and couldn’t be bothered simply typing ‘thanks’.... at the very least! Served for his country or not, a real man shows gratitude
@reality-cheque4 жыл бұрын
Nandor Buga - many thanks for that. I’ve only just seen your reply after an alert. That certainly looks like my watch, although I think the crystal was flat and slightly recessed into the bezel, whereas this one looks like it is slightly domed. 980.026 could be a ‘civilian’ version but it looks really nice.

I have two of these! And two of the Seiko black & gold titanium nitride watches. Of these four watches, two were purchased at the China Fleet Club in Hong Kong in 1978 when Hong Kong was still a British colony. All are running and keeping very good time. Whenever the batteries have run down, I send them in for cleaning, battery R&R, and service to dive specifications.

Thats where it started - but it wasn't until I got my first proper watch (the Breitling B2) as a 40th birthday prezzie (15 years ago now) that it really kicked off. Been buying as I can afford spare change since.

I love dive watches. No I don't go diving but I live in the Philippines and enjoy the beaches. I usually go swimming with my skx007 and use the dive time bezel to remind my sunblock retouch every 30mins. Massive respect for seiko after researching seiko's contribution to the development of dive watches. Love that seiko tuna!♥️

I always get a kick out of divers watches. They are beautiful, but no one really using them for diving.
@ROrneli3 жыл бұрын
specially at 300 meters ! lol most recreational divers (also known as sport divers) do not get past the 160 feet mark because that requires a special mix. So the gold standard for most of the dive watches is 200 meters which more than covers 99% of diving. they may be maybe 100 saturation divers in the world. It is a nasty job, days in a capsule the size of a demolition ball and in total darkness and very very cold. Some people cross the 200 meter mark but a regular diving computer and ISO diving watch will easily cross 200 meters you just won't be able to operate the buttons on the watch past 200 (safely anyways) Old school diving watches like this are just for the look of the diver. almost all my watches are divers I am a big fan of the look. but when I go under I take my frogman GWF-A1000 on the left wrist and my diving computer on the right wrist. Besides salt water deteriorates watches and devaluates them quickly.I honestly only know 1 diver that dives with a Citizen aqualand but the rest use G-shocks as back ups. No one that I know would dive with a Rolex submariner or anything north of 1000 dollars.

+James Welling If the Tuna being quartz is putting you off, you may not know or care about the Tuna's history. (And that's totally fine! 😊) the fact is, the tuna's transition to a quartz movement was an important step for Seiko and I think that's super rad!

I wanted a Tuna for a while, on my search, I ended up with the Baby Tuna SRP637. Great watch, loved it, but it wasn't a Tuna. So, I ended up selling it and got a SBBN033. I prefer the stainless steel bezel as it makes the overall watch look smaller than it my seem like on paper being almost 48mm... and, like many Seiko's, they wear smaller than their plain stated case size would suggest.. and they are all very comfortable. I'll quickly add, I totally agree about Seiko and say this. They are both highly regarded yet highly disregarded unfairly. What I mean is that some people think once you start paying over $XXXX for a Seiko, they are not worth it compared to the same cost for a Swiss brand. So, untrue. Seiko has an incredibly long history, excellent track record, original designs, technological innovation, and pack tons of value per dollar, all in-house, etc.. the list can continue quite a bit longer, but despite all the +'s, for some weird reason that all goes out the window when it comes to paying more for higher-end Seiko's which is ridiculous. Not going rant anymore, but highly agree with you and enjoyed the video. THanks.

Indeed the quality does show. I can't tell from the pictures but does the shroud come off? On rare occasions I've had to clean fine sand out of my Seiko 5H26-7A19 bezel after some tropical diving and the thought of sand getting in between that bezel and shroud is scary. Also if it is removable, it would be interesting to see what is beneath.

Truth to tell, I didn't know a whole lot about 'em...above and beyond the obvious. But a month later...and I now know a whole lot more... And I have to say, I really am super impressed. The Grand Seiko is outrageous. But that aside and despite owning a Rolex Sub and a Bell and Ross, I have a Mini Turtle arriving imminently in the post. Gotta say that I'm pretty stoked about it! A super cool little watch I think that represent Uber bang for buck. Seiko I think should rightly be super proud of what they're doing. So keep up the good work my man. You're doing a bang up job. I wish I could have the enthusiasm you have about Seiko...but I bought I seiko samurai dive watch, loved it, however the first time I wore it in water it leaked. Yes the crown was screwed down tight, no I never opened the case back. All the lume was ruined, do I sent it to be fixed/ I tried to get them to replace it with a different watch( same model). All they did was fix the dial they had no idea why it leaked customer service was horrible and it took a few months and cost around 100 bucks. So now I can't even take my dive watch diving because it will almost certainly leak. My casio duro has done several dives down to 100 feet and works perfect.

I actually dive and Seiko makes great diver watches. But IMO Deep Blue makes the best of the best. Sure, many Seiko divers have a shielded luminous pip at the 12 hour marker on the bezel. Not only does that come on Deep Blue divers but the entire ceramic bezel has ultra lume. As far as depth ratings go..... Deep Blue Depthmaster 2 (I am currently favoring that one for my dives now) is rated at 3000 meters. Another aspect I love about Deep Blue is that they employ a bunch of multi colored tritium tubes on a single watch. It's a very unique look.

Hey Time teller tell me this please, The Tuna comes in many forms and prices (about three ranges) can you make sense of this for us? The Kinetic is not considered a "true Tuna" why? it seems smart to not have to break it open to replace batteries. Did you compare all and consider this one as best or are you saying any Tuna is best?

Awesome watch. Just not sure if I personally could spend that much on a quartz. But it's soooooo damn great looking! Kudos for doing the hurricane intro. If I didn't already donate, you probably would've convinced me to there. If most US citizens donated $10-$15 there would be money to spare. That's not including government aid and insurance. With that, probably $3-$6 would be enough to make it like it never happened. Hope someone reading this just makes the leap. Even a dollar or two can be $25-$50 in medical aid through Americares. I just thought if it was me, one of those people affected would've donated to help. Also, I love your outro! I think it's my favorite outro I've seen on KZbin. Just a few days ago and you already have a ton more subs. Congrats man.

I HAVE BEEN collecting Seiko watches since I was in the U.S. Army, 45 years ago. From the first time I saw a Seiko automatic, I was hooked. Overseas in the military was the perfect opportunity to by brand name watches at incredible prices. Often, right at the base exchange. Since a Rolex at that time cost under 200 dollars, you can imagine what great Seiko's cost. Obviously much less and very affordable. Yes, there is something about Seiko watches that goes beyond the good value and reliability. Its a cult.

I've owned a Seiko divers for a few years. Great looking but 1. scratched when I hit it on a wall. My fault? Yes, but a G-shock wouldn't 2. left it on a hot day in a relatively hot place and the illumination tube on the bezel came out 3. illumination charge is poor. Dive with it for 20 minutes - you probably can, but see time in the morning - not Otherwise it's been great.

I've been viewing a bunch of watch videos - I like your channel - I'm just not feeling classic dive watches until now - this watch is amazing - thanks for sharing the big tuna
