@@matthewkeyes4639 why does it need insulation? 2 inch thick walls and roof will retain enough heat while in use, surely?
@stuntcock013 жыл бұрын
@@matthewkeyes4639you're right in that he didn't use the best materials for the job, but we dont know... maybe this was a cheap case study in "can I build a sauna" before he went out and spent thousands and thousands of dollars on 4x4 red cedar posts. as for the structure... this exact building method is used by Finnish sauna builders. there is no need for insulation when you are using solid walls like this, and even most cedar barrel saunas which use T&G panel don't have insulation or vapour barrier ; A sauna is only meant to be hot while you are in it. the structure itself doesnt need to retain heat, only the rocks in the stove. the only disadvantage to using knotty wood is that it heats up unevenly and its uncomfortable to touch. a knot on the wall isn't a big deal... a knot on the bench will hurt. . the wood may or may not rot. there is a Japanese technique called Shou Sugi Ban which he did (scorching the wood) which serves as a form of weatherproofing. only thing I would do differently is not use glue. the tension from the threaded rod is enough to compress the beams. I agree with you that this may not be the best LONG TERM application, but it works. as with anything, do your own research. that is common sense.

@Juho When you are showing a video of how you made something on KZbin, you can assume others will look it up as a guide to follow. He built his walls with allthread... I love the video, and love how he illustrates that you can get away with a super simple structure... but since this is the first thing I saw on Google after looking up how to make your own sauna, it's a good thing people mention in comments that those looking to build their own should look for instructions elsewhere. Cool video, don't do what he did, it's a poorly built structure. TBH I'm impressed a guy who uses his phone as a level and a drill bit as a jigsaw pulled this off, I genuinely enjoyed it, but the critical comments serve as a disclaimer IMHO.

The issue isn't that his build isnt beautiful but the way he built it is dangerous (no cap on the smokestack and no support for the bench where he is sitting on) and also this hut will break in a few years because he didnt cover the roof all the way so water will leak into it and mold will start to grow. My issue is simply that if he invested like 10% more time and thought it out a little better, this build could have been 100% better. The Japanese calls it Shou Sugi Ban and it improves longevity outdoor.

Other guy is right. This is a method we use often out in the woods when access to fancy material is not available. It prevents mold, deterioration, and pests. It will improve the lifespan of the wood. Additionally it helps make a liquid proof seal.

Really good I enjoyed and of course you could make it more insulated that's just extra time on the video, the bones of the construction and idea are there...well done ps I want one

Since I can't use the sauna at the gym due to the nonsense antisocial distancing rules, I'm considering building one in my garage. I really miss getting a good sweat going in the sauna and being able to warm up when it's cold outside. I'm thinking about using an infrared heater, though. Wish I knew someone who has one in their sauna to try it out, so I can see how it compares to a traditional electric heater. Appreciate seeing your build.

Great video! Nice sauna! I am curious, why is it that people don't build their sauna with a gravel floor?
@Unboxingexperience72 жыл бұрын
- It's cold when not heated, but gets very hot during a Sauna session. - It does not insulate. - It's difficult to clean. Bacteria have a tougher time on wood.
@LUCKY_LARRY2 жыл бұрын
@@Unboxingexperience7 - Hmm. I have been in two old, wood heated saunas that had an earth floor. One in Northern MN, and another in the UP. They both worked really well. One had a small platform under the feet, much like the bench you sat on. Three tiers, basically. One being the floor.
@ProjectsandThings4 жыл бұрын
Smart move to use y´r roofing burner to do the wood as well! I also put a Harvi M3 in my DIY sauna. that thing works wonders. I added insulation to mine, but with the heat that is generated I can see how this thing can get hot enough without insulation. I dropped a video about the build on my channel as well.

This was a damn interesting approach! Threaded rod to keep the boards in line than bolt them down. If though the stove is exhausting, I'm thinking some soot might escape and being that your in a very confined area. This may be bad over the years.
