Both her bankruptcies are both completely understandable The first one was a completely hideous first record deal. Almost everyone in those days had awful first deals. She was on top of the world, but it cost a lot to put her on top, and it all came out of her own paycheck The second bankruptcy was a technicality that the insurance company found to get themselves out of payment. Toni was performing a lucrative stint in Vegas around her Libra album, but had a heart attack and her lupus debilitated her. Because of this, she could no longer perform, but all that lighting equipment, dancers and overall tech for her show had to be paid for, and because the insurance company got themselves out of it by using Toni's illness against her, she was forced to pay and thus forced to file bankruptcy again. It sounds like 2 insane situations, but few people have had the unique circumstances Toni has been in.

Beyonce fired her father and manages her own money. She actually took Oprah's advice about signing your own checks. Oprah extended the same advice to Toni when she appeared on her show but I think she took offense to the advice. So we have bankruptcy number 2. So many people are throwing stones at her but the same thing happened to her as with TLC, NWA, and countless others. You come in the music industry losing sleep, always working, world tours away from your family anywhere from 3 months to a year at a time doing concerts, shows, interviews, plus rehearsals, still recording, shooting videos, having personal trainers, going to awards shows and all these special events you have to show your face at...you see you're selling millions of records and hear your songs staying all over the radio...you EXPECT to have a pretty big check but unfortunately costs for music videos, touring (gas, planes, food, hotels, drivers, cost of your tour buses) plus you have to pay everyone (managers, producers, organizers, songwriter's, choreographers, that big set up crew you take on tour, plus their room and board), wardrobe for the tours, your stylist, the pr team, back up dancers, backup singers, the musicians who travel with you whenever you're performing live...I haven't even added in the marketing costs, the cost of manufacturing all those albums you sold to keep them in stores, all the studio time you used to make the album...and even more hidden costs...you get paid LAST of whatever's left after all the literal hundred ppl before you who get their cut.
