Try holding the short for a few seconds, then I bet that transistor will no longer be unbreakable!

You will damage the transistor if you hold the short, try disconnecting the antenna or dummy load as that will smoke it. 1000watts into 50ohms Is a awful lot of power, the amps cost over $500 usd not that cheap either. The wire is held with pliers is not a short circuit, but it causing a mismatch. It looks like about 100 watts of rf energy in those sparks you are pulling. If you disconnect the load and mess with it, it will flash up and burn and destroy the rf connector, catch fire. VHF at 1kw is no toy it can be dangerous.

It will work but you won't get full power as you will need a more powerful PSU. PAs are not 100% efficient.

These Fets are ALMOST unbreakable, BUT, as others have said, leave it into an infinite VSWR for some time, it will not survive. In addition, a near lightning strike to the transmitter will kill ANY MOSFET.

Yes. The same trick a quarter wavelenght further down the line, would put a high voltage peak on the LDMOS drain destroying it immediately

Its a good idea to run the amp at less than 1/2 power for the purpose of increasing its life and reducing the chance of damage if a mismatch occurs. Use more modules to get the power needed, instead if possible.
