We are in 1921, women were expected to be married young. Not easy to be a woman in a man's world without protection so her wedding ring is her safety net and probably the buttoned up look and the glasses ... in my opinion

I agree with others that Edie isn't really married. I think eventually Lucas and Edie will work together. Then Lucas will become a successful governor. Also Edie will become Lucas' new girlfriend.
