Great interview by Gareth especially with the inspiring Prof. Mamokgethi Phakeng 😊 🙌. She understands what Black people have gone through when it comes to education. I admire her Leadership at UCT and proud that she left because the institution before it became toxic to her health.

What she speaks and does is very controversial...like not all people are meant for university, like not all people are leaders so is the Prof..not a great leader at all. Only driving political agenda's instead of driving education.

Her perception and perspective on education is precisely diversified, she knows the difference between the privileged and deprived when coming to accession on education in overall. Academical education has been politically influenced and inclined from initial, and now is very difficult for a deprived child to become an academic.

i highly concur with the speaker audience 1;25;38 on the issue of academic journals not being free to access instead one having to pay for them. i honestly think the system is depriving those who cant afford the opportunity to indulge various scholars and acquire information. if something is published it should be available to the public without a hassle to access it

I am still struggling for a job which requires a major in mathematics and statistics. Marks on my academic record are poor. I am currently doing an administration job. I have given up looking for work done by investment, data analysts and engineers; quantitative analysts. I have given up looking for work heavily requiring a mathematics and statistics major. Starting a business (which will probably fail) is the only way to respond to the extended definition of unemployment.

Gareth, you seem to have mellowed over time and with age. Listening to you back in the day, we where primed for interviews were the content would at times veer in a direction where we could expect, awkward silences, controversy, you stirring the hornets nest, rocking the applecart with great enthusiasm, pushing the envelope, man . I guess what im really saying, is that i expected an edgy interview, Gareth. Prof courted controversy and somehow , she seemed to be handled with kid gloves. That, Eugene Khoza is a really funny guy.

1st, her being a Maths educator by profession means she'd have probably have cultivated a way of thinking that makes her inclined to being extra careful with her word selection when expressing herself because excatness and clarity are very important to mathematicians, 2nd, english is not her first language and that means she probably doesnt process (some of) her thoughts in the language, and so as she articulates herself she has to constantly translate her thoughts into a second language, something that some of us who didn't grow up speaking English as a first language can relate to, and speaking of laguages, how many African languages can you speak? And also her waving hands like that as she speaks is something typical of people who tend to speak pationately and have lively personalities, does that offend your sensibilities?
