You said he was effortless. The way I think of it is that he looks like he's singing in the shower or in his car on the way to work. There is absolutely NO effort or strain. There is only that beautiful, beautiful voice. No one will ever top or even equal this version of UM, no, not even Elvis. I love Elvis' singing but I think he would have been well advised to leave this particular song alone. Once Bobby Hatfield sung it, it stayed sung! BTW, if you are tempted to sing this in your audition for some TV talent show I have just one thing to say to you....DON'T!

Phrasing, almost yodeling, so very smooth; breath control exemplary. No strain to reach the notes; no vocal "stretching" or "searching" to get to the exact pitch -- he's right on target every time! I've watched scores and scores of reaction videos to this song and you are one of the most astute of all commentators. I was especially happy that you called out (as only a few have) Bobby's second "Are you..." at the 6:30 mark and the earnest way he sang -- nearly spoke -- those words, with the head nod that made it so incredibly believable and personal. It was as if we were illicitly entering as unworthy interlopers into a private moment between the singer and his beloved. Bobby strategically and yet seamlessly deployed nearly every conceivable nuance and coloration that any singer could possibly muster to any song, and let's face it --- Bobby's vocal portfolio was as big as a steamer trunk as compared with other singers' "bag of tricks." Bobby suffered from terrible stage fright and so wanted to perform well on this October 25, 1965 edition of The Andy Williams Show, as Bobby's mother was in the audience. The lip bite at the end of the song was no doubt an acknowledgement that he had done well for "Ma." The multi-talented Robert Lee Hatfield, Born in Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Class President at Anaheim High, football standout, co-captain of the basketball team, Bobby gave up a career in professional baseball to give us the lasting legacy of his other-worldly voice. A once--in-forever talent, a serenading angel come to earth. And we are blessed to have seen and heard him.

I had read accounts that, at this taping of the Andy Williams Show, his mother was in the audience (possibly his father too) and Bobby was a little nervous going into the song. The moment you mention towards the end when he went from being somewhat playful to taking on the more serious, emotional look for a moment, was, I believe, because he was gearing up for the climax, and he so wanted the ending to be "perfect" for his mother, and as you noted, he absolutely nailed it, hence the cheeky lip-bite at the end. He knew he had made her proud.

I just love how you picked up on so many of the subtleties in the performance like the look he gives when he says "are you" right before he breaks out. That was one of the first things I noticed. They say that his mom was in the audience and I'm guessing that a lot of that extra emotion and the countertenor range at the end may have had something to do with that. Again thank you for telling people about what a fantastic singer Bobby was. Just recently I heard Bill Medely sing "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" and was blown away!! You hear this mostly from female singers but WoW!!! Bill did a super job on this song. I don't remember him singing it back in the day but he did! And it's great!! I love these guys toget & on any of their solo's!!! They are The Righteous Brothers the Dynamic Duo then & now!!! These boys deserve to be recognized and passed in to the younger generation!! We all fall hopelessly in love at the first whoa! If Bobby had been sitting on rocks singing this, passing ocean going liners would have beached themselves to listen, he was a modern day siren. I like the way you noticed the orchestra building up to the climax, what is that instrument making the pa-pa-pa tone, it imputes a lonely sort of ambiance. The superb voice control, the gestures, the music, the words it all combines to make perfection. I go to sleep with this earth angel every night, I get the EchoDot to play this as I snuggle down to sleep, it's my lullaby. I have such sweet dreams ;)

It's so good to see how this affected you--I get chills each time I hear it. Knowing you loved his voice, I believe you would enjoy hearing some of his other solos. He sang "You Alone" and "MY Prayer" originally done by Tony Williams and the Platters also a great group from the doo-wop era. Bobby also did "Somewhere" from West Side Story, "I Believe", and a jazzed up version of "Summertime". You can pull all these on You Tube. Hope to hear you react to these songs. This is live performance is actually far better than the studio/record version most would be familiar with from the movie Ghost...this live version is quite different and far more powerful! Quite right...3 octave voice and he breezed through two octaves in this live version.

Spot on assessment dXX. Mr Hatfields almost conversational style in his singing is uniquely effective. Karen Carpenter also had this remarkable gift. Both would be on my Mt Rushmore with Elvis and Ray Charles. The last note is either a G4 or a G#4. depending on the speed of the playbacks you hear on other reaction videos. Yours is a perfect G4. The songs key is C. So it ends on the 5th. A note that most singers will never reach. Remarkable. Great video. Thanks for sharing, RNB

As a pure singer Roy Orbison is unmatched. His voice drew at the heartstrings. His operatic timber was spine tingling. And his heart is on display in every word he wrote and sang. Heart, but not soul. And when I use the word soul, I mean as in soulful. And I believe that was the difference between him and Elvis. And why his brilliant catalogue has a more limited (but still huge) audience, for the long term. I saw Roy perform at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga California only a few months before his passing. The greatest voice I ever heard live. And at 61, I've seen a lot. Best wishes, RNB

The UK mount Rushmore? Wow, I haven’t thought about that one, but Freddie obviously has to be out there where George Washington is on the original mount Rushmore. Freddie is number one. Number two, for me, would be David Gilmour. There is just something about his voice that reaches in and grabs me. I think number three would be Robert Plant. It is not a great voice, but it is so extraordinarily expressive. The fourth one might be Dolores O’Riordan. Her voice, my God, it gets me every time. How about you? Unchained Melody was written for the prison movie 'Unchained' (1955). Hence the title of the song. It was first sung by African American opera singer, theatre and film actor Todd Duncan. The songs melody was composed by Alex North (1910-1991) and lyrics were by Hy Zaret (1907-2007). Together their greatest work would become a standard, and become one of the most recorded songs in the history of music. Since 1955 this song has been sung by almost every major recording artist in the world. Ten years later in a live television performance on the 'Andy Williams Show' (1965). One correction 😊 this song was produced and arranged by Bobby’s partner Bill Medley - who also played piano on the studio recording . It was never meant to be released as a single. Phil Specter put it on the B side of intended hit song he produced, and B sides are generally ignored …. This one wasn’t. It became an accidental hit.

Nobody will ever top what he did with this song. He was singing his heart out and it came through beautifully. He enjoyed singing it and it showed in every note. There will never be anyone who can top him. I still enjoy it as much or more now than I did when I first heard it. He sings it so effortlessly and each note is beautiful. The song seems like it was made just for him to do and it will never be sung so perfectly as when he sang it. He had such perfect control and every note seems so effortless. This was taken from Andy Williams show. If this song had been released before Beatles came to America you would know Bobby Hatfield's name and asking Beatles who are they. Only Phil Spector got involved and tried to put Unchained Melody on side B of another single. He took credit for the album but it was The Righteous Brother Bill Melody who produced the album. Bobby laid down tracks went home then came back said he could do it better and he did. 65 here and I slow danced fell in and out of love as a teen listening as my older sisters who never got into the Beatles Mania played it over and over. It is a song that you wish the singer was right there singing directly to you. He had one of not only the greatest voices but pure romance coming through. His Gentleman looks only added to the package.

My wife and son saw the Righteous Brothers at the MGM Grand probably in the late 90’s, an Bobby admitted he had trouble with the high notes, but Bobby and Bill still gave an unforgettable performance live. I’ll never forget that.

@@daxmusix It is indeed impressive but not me, it is all him. And the fact that he could present it in such a poetic conversational way with as you so astutely pointed out, absolutely no strain in body or voice. All with no digital augmentation or enhancements that are so prevalent in today’s artist's performances. Bobby was a treasure and if one explores his entire body of work over his career, it only serves to impress even more. Add to that the fact that he suffered nearly paralyzing stage freight all through his career, which by the way lead to him using cocaine. However, contrary to reports at the time his death which was not from a cocaine overdose. It was from a long-standing heart condition instead. By the way, his parents were in the audience for that live performance, (no pressure) and he finished with a satisfied smile, as if to say, take that to the bank folks. This performance will always be remembered as one of the most viewed and valued classic love song renditions ever. One that elicits a broad range of emotions in every listener regardless of musical taste or background. I have watched countless reaction videos to this performance and except for those that are just mugging for the camera and offering far too many interruptions to have really listened to the performance at all. The vast majority regardless of gender have a pronounced emotional and sometimes even physical reaction to it. All of which appear to be genuine and profound. And that includes many professional vocal coaches. It is one thing to hear this performance but to see Bobby and his ease of delivery along with the astounding vocal gymnastics and range is truly an experience to remember. Thank you for an honest, heartfelt reaction. And if I may, I want to compliment you on doing some pre-reaction research for yourself instead of asking all your viewers to do it for you as is often the case with the reaction videos.

@@MrHorsepro Horseman , thank you for the real reason for Bobby's death. Wheather he was a coke addict is very questionable. Bill said that if he had thought Bobby was using drugs, he would have done something. So how do you work with someone for decades and not know? Bobby was a class act until he died, and there will never be another like him. Bobby' biggest downfall was a huge appetite and smoking. He ate lots of junk food, that's what killed him.

Bobbie had a head cold that night and he wasn’t sure he would be able to sing it. His mother was in the audience and had never heard him sing this song before. So he was thrilled when he was able to pull it off for her benefit!

I was 15 when this song came out. It was great then and just as good today. It’s been covered more than 60 times. Even Elvis who sung it is just not as good. Bobby Hatfields and Bill Medley were the greatest duo of all time. I’m a 70 year old guy and still get the chills. You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling was the most played song of the 20th Century and still sounds great. I think more people today, young people are enjoying it. If you can can you play Rock And Roll Heaven. A very un appreciated song from 74. Thx for your insight.
