The chimaki sticky rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo leaves in Chinese are called "zongzi" in Mandarin or "joong" in Cantonese.

Actually that Chinese dish you menioned was called zongzi (漢字は「粽子」です。英語は Rice Dumplingです。) Chinese people used such kind of food to honour our famous politician and poet“屈原(Qu Yuan)”. Very delicious Chinese dish.

For 1st time eater, i would prefer you to eat Malaysian style nasi lemak because of traditional and original. My suggest as optional: Why not Steve and Peach visit Malaysia first? You will feel, the culture, multiethnic, diverse food, etc. Don't worry, in Malaysia lot Japanese lives here..

I’m from the US. My mom’s parents were from Mexico. Eating sugar cane for children who are Hispanic/Latino is a thing here (and in parts of Latin America).

actually the one that they speaks about is not soy sauce but tamarind sauce. tamarind originate from south east Asia but English called it Tamar(ind) because they assume tamarind from India. tamarind were use for malay, Thai, vietnamese and Indian style cooking. Chinese who migrate to south east Asia started to use it in their foods. so tamarind never used in China or East asia country

Btw, the "Chimaki" u mentioned in videos is called "Zong Zi(Zzz)" in mandarin, there are various kind of leaves being used overall based on area around the world. Different type of leaves give different aroma. The most widely used leaf to wrap up the glutinous rice in Malaysia is Indocalamus leaves (here I'm assuming the whole M'sia is using the same kind of leaves, but maybe there will be a different type used as dishes at different part of M'sia might differ, I'm from West M'sia North region). Last time is kind of rare to find if its far away from the date, but now still can be found as some sell this as their main business nowadays. There are also various kind of Zong zi available, consider it originate from different clan (hokkien, cantonese, hakkanese, etc...). Besides, from business POV nowadays, various new type being introduced to consumer as well, from normal to super fancy... its all about 💰😅 Still awaits u guys to visit M'sia 😉 This is a festive food that we originally make it and eat on 5th of May in Lunar calendar during so called "Dragon boat festival", the rice dumpling is not meant for the dragon boat race though but for a Chinese poet and politician in the State of Chu during the Warring States period, name "Qu Yuan". He is known for his patriotism and contributions to classical poetry and verses, however he get exiled by his beloved king and end up suiciding by jump into Miluo River. In order to commemorate him, citizens of Chu State make the rice dumpling and throw into the river so that the fish/prawn/crab in the river eat the dumplings and don't end up eating his corpse.

The difference between Malaysian and Singaporean nasi lemak was Malaysian nasi lemak you get plenty of sambal and we put everything together. Singaporean nasi lemak you get just enough of sambal and everything put on the side. But if ask me how good was Singaporean nasi lemak, I don't know because I'm Malaysian. I only eat the best nasi lemak 😝

Honestly Malaysian Street Nasi Lemak is a shame. Most of them are too stingy, the rice taste like nothing, fried chicken also overcook & very dry, sambal very little, fried peanut always taste bitter & burn. In Singapore they use coconut milk & coconut cream to cook the rice. Fried chicken cook in a certain temperature. The most important things is they're not stingy.

Thats like saying a 24k golden steak made by salt bae disguting. I didint know i have to eat nasi lemak that was made by the best chef that has a restraunt with 5 michelin stars. Also i live in malaysia johor and i have went to singapore and yea the food was good. I never once said "This shit taste like dog shit that was blend with sulfuric acid and the rice is raw completely so raw like singapore what a disspointment, im gonna go puke in the ocean now" i never said such thing while eating singapore food. #StopHating

Nasi lemak is national dish, it's cheap, stomach satisfying, and u can have it as breakfast, lunch or dinner.. u can get it with RM1~2, refer to basic nasi lemak, nowadays it's hard to get RM1 per pack, mostly 1++ or 2++, but maybe it still available in some places though.. fancy nasi lemak can add various stuff on it so the price is also could vary a lot.. PS: u r welcome to travel to Malaysia as well, don't look only to Singapore 😊 I can be your tour guide for Penang (1 of 13 state of Malaysia)..

Mmmmm I don't think we can find rm1 nasi lemak in Penang anymore but Butterworth maybe in housing/kampung area. I buy once and I get about 5 small anchovies and 1/8 part of egg 😀

Lotus leaves! Interesting. From my understanding, Zongzi is wrapped with bamboo leaves. If it's lotus leaves, i would say it's Cantonese 糯米鸡 or 糯米雞. No sure what it is in English tho

Seem mei me know better to heat the banana leaf, most Malaysian people now a day forgot about to heat it, and make me as local Malaysian won't buy nasi Lemak that do not heat the banana leaf, still not hygienic even the banana leaf is been wash....need to heat it no matter what..no need chicken actually, small cup of nasi Lemak already enough for the day.

she's make for selling food. the traditional ways is more easy. and the rice actually need to use 3 things 1) coconut milk 2) ginger 3) pandan leaves ginger is to prevent gassy stomach, pandan leaves to make rice smell goods, coconut milk to make rice more fluffy and I don't know the English words for lemak. that's why it's called nasi lemak. you can skip secret recipe she use for chicken because chicken is not original part of nasi lemak.

Nope. Singapore is multiracial country but the nasi lemak here most popular is made by malay, not saying chinese dont make it but malay do it better. Chinese here good at chicken rice and maybe few other dish but nasi lemak??? No no no, nasi lemak is not just malaysian food but is traditional malay food so as much as malaysian hates this, its not we steal their food but singapore have malay people also y'know like myself. Hahah singapore have this history thing being rivals and hated each other, i have family tree that origin in malaysia but i born singapore so its not obvious I side more to singapore. But I'm not like against being friends with malaysian no I'm open person but when it comes to this arguments who is better? sorry i have to side with singapore. Advantage being singaporean other than GST voucher we get (sorry for those dont understand what this is) is having malaysia as neighbor, over here things expensive? Easy, go shop in malaysia cheaper there then come home. $1 singapore is 3 RM there thats y malaysian decide work here, earn more. But seriously i think the whole singapore/malaysia rivalry got to go, the past is the past malaysia already got their karma for kicking us out so its time to let rivalry go. Singapore now successful, strict? Yes but some laws are there for good reasons thats y our crime is low like chewing gum being banned is for good damn reason eventhough i manage to bring some in when i went to malaysia. And then there are some laws that even as singaporean i find so ridiculous which I'm not going to mention
