Thank you so much for this !!! How wonderful to see AND HEAR live performances !!! So BEAUTIFULLY and tenderly sung by Scotto !!! The thick orchestration of Puccini covers her voice in the lower register...but no matter what...a gorgeous performance...and the high C gallo at the end of the duet was very well covered up with acting !!! He was lovely too.

questo tenore è Giacomini non Giuliano Ciannella. Giuliano aveva una voce ben diversa che io , sua compagna di studi al Conservatorio di Bologna, rammento nei minimi particolari.

She sang Lucia di Lammermoor, Sonnambula & Gilda in Rigoletto, which means that she's a light lyric soprano to start with. Freni never sang either Lucia or Gilda. But Scotto managed/dared to sing this heavy role of Butterfly, which is kind of crazy.... ONLY SCOTTO can do such a vocal acrobats!!! Besides, being such a romantic, sensitive & naive Japanese adolescent (Cio-cio san was 15, in this scene and commits suicide at 18 or 19 max...) so naturally and convincingly is simply grandiose.

Una favola,la Scotto e' stata ancora una volta favolosa,senza quegli stridori nelle note alte che la caratterizzavano quando tendeva a forzare troppo,con la voce perfettamente poggiata sui fiati...un brivido.

Ici, Scotto est encore en meilleure forme qu'avec les "live" aux côtés de José Carreras. Superbement chanté ce magnifique duo à donner (et qui donne ici) la chair de poule. Ciannella lui aussi en grande forme, un ténor hélas sous-estimé et parti trop tôt.

It's so annoying that Scotto spoiled an otherwise strong performance (at least for me) by her constant insistence on always singing straight to the audience. It's a love duet and hardly even glances at Ciannella who is forced to turn his head to look at her. Her last note however wobbles badly.
