Uncle Tony, I live in the deep south, was twisting wrenches when I was 12 yrs old helping my brother build. I became a big mopar fan over the years, built many. I absolutly loved the slant six, to me it was art. Mopar had their sxxt together! I never got to take my builds to the depths you take yours, I stayed pertty much stock, they produced the power I needed quite fine. My favorite engines were the slant 6 and the 318, it could run forever. In fact I drive a 98 ram1500 with the 318 on a daily basis. 187K on the clock and all you have to do is bump the key just to get one piston to hit the power spot and the motor fires off everytime. It doesn't need to spin and spin, just a bump and go. I'm currently hoping to find a donar truck to get what I need to change over to a 5 speed stick as I have pertty much lost faith in dodge being able to build a trouble free automatic. Since fighting and BEATING stage 3 lung cancer and no longer able to work, everything I do is on a tight budget, lol. Gotta love a mopar! Back in the day, I had a 70 sport fury I had built up with a 440 interceptor in it, car was smooth as gas, couldn't get any of the weekend bunch to run against me out at our favorite 1/4 mile spot, they all knew I would blow em off the road. The car was an absolute beast. I couldn't afford it these days though as it got 12 mpg on premium only. It was fast! Put it in first, gas on it and see 84 mph before the valves started floating, hit 2nd and it was a gone pecan. I played with the suspension a bit, car set long an low, handled like a dream. Everyone called it a 'land shark' fast and ready to eat anything that got in it way. I eventually sold it and one day on the way home from work seen it on a used car lot. Came home and told the wife I was going to go buy the car back, went to the car lot he had just sold it, couple hours later saw it on a roll back wrecker, it had been destroyed. The front end of the car was about 2 ft shorter. Guess the guy that bought it just couldn't handle what it was capable of doing. I'm just gonna keep to my little 318 pickup, it does everything I need it to do. Here lately been giving alot of thought into a true dual exhaust and would love to find an old carbureted 340 for the heads and intake. Just can't stand the POS 'kegger' style intake, most restrictive intake I've ever seen....all in good time, it will happen......

Wendell Jourdan Nick found a lot of things wrong with it but the comment was it was a thrown together engine. The lessons learned which I thought were useful was a typical shade tree mechanic would likely make the same mistakes and this is an example of what not to do with an economy build. Uncle Tony is typically very methodical with his engines so I trust his judgement on the 318 quick-build.

Oh, good, methanol-water injection is already planned. I would chase down an under carb nitrous plate to spray the "water injection" through. Oh, just remembered another trick that may help with heat: ceramic coat the *inside* of the exhaust manifold. That helps keep the heat in the exhaust gasses and out of the cast iron. You will still need to worry about intake air temp, but water injection should cover that side. I would absolutely install a temperature sensor in the compressor outlet, at least while tuning.

You can build some pretty neat heat shields with some tin , copper or red RTV ,and exhaust wrap. Glue the wrap to the tin and install. Or use that trick on original heat shields too. This can be a real pita , but if you cut short strips of wrap and bind them to the manifold with some safety wire that is effective. Might look a little ugly but it works.

@@needmetal3221 Yea true ,almost makes me wish it was diesel. I used to run an old VW 1.6 turbodiesel , no intercooler and about 35psi of boost for a daily beater. I crutched it with a homemade water injection setup by using an old washer bottle with a pump built in, fogging it right in the turbo inlet. On a diesel , it's easy to tune,keep adding water (i used blue washer fluid) until it quits and back off a little. Kinda shocking how much water it would take. The "jet" ended up being some copper gauge line and in the free air it would shoot about 5-6 feet. So no intercooler ? Uncle Tony, a possibility to be aware of, I tried to place a brand new 3-row aluminum V8 Radiator (Champion brand) in my 66 valiant in place of its stock one (also a Slant 6 car), and, although I was technically able to make it fit, it would have required electric pusher fans inside of the grille/valance area because it would not clear ANY belt-driven setup. Mine being an AC car, that was out of the question because that is where the condenser core lives, I realize that is a later model dart and so the dimensions are surely different, but it is something that you two may want to just keep in mind. Nice Dart, love the channel.

Hey Uncle Tony, be sure that head is flat. I had one milled and it came back dished. It happens a lot on these lengthy blocks and heads.
@mpetersen64 жыл бұрын
If it wasn't flat within the specified range it wasn't set up properly. The head would need to be clamped directly over the riser blocks the head was sitting on. Plus if the head is rocking on the riser blocks then this needs to be eliminated by the either the use of shims between the riser block or the use of Jack Screws in place of the block or blocks. Even then you still need to make sure that each end of the head is at the same height. The valve cover gasket surface is NEVER used by the manufacturer as a locating surface during manufacturing.

The water meth is a good idea to control the temps. if there is any reversion lips on the back of the intake valves it would be a good idea to get them gone just to reduce restriction and not need as much boost to get as much CFM, hopefully it gets you into the efficiency zone of the compressor sooner and would reduce the charge temps in the low to mid RPM range under high load. Something else that might be a good idea would be a 4" dump pipe that necks down to a 2 3/4" - 3" tail pipe, it will make the turbo seem more on and off but you will get way better cylinder temps under high load if it behaves anything like the 2L Saab motors when they get up around 350+HP.

I would like to see it. It could be fun in a light car or 2wd pickup. It does have limitations, being a draw-thru, non-intercooled on gasoline. I am sure the armchair types are already lining up a 9 yard dump truck of negativity-haha. The Buick V6 and the Pontiac 301 turbo unit share pretty much the same parts except the compressor scrolls- A/R.42 on the Buick V6, A/R.80 on the Pontiac 301. You can see the #'s just up from where it bolts to the intake manifold. The 301 compressor castings do pop up, so keep an eye out if yours is off a Buick V6. The Buick V6 and Pontiac 301 had a "turbo computer" that limited timing under boost. I do not know much about them. A MSD 6T can do the same thing. Remember-the OEM stuff was meant for a new car in the late '70's early '80's with those lousy 1st generation catalytic converters- jetting on the oem carb is going to need attention. Anyway-go for it!

That turbo is too small to be worth while on a 318. Pontiac only made 220hp with them.
@ScottKenny19784 жыл бұрын
@@lb9gta307 if it will give you 10psi of boost, that's plenty for the street. 15psi would be double whatever the base HP of the engine was (give or take). Remember, the Ford 302 was rated at 140hp in the 1970s, and only made it up to 225 by 1990. If you're not having to fight craptastic first generation catalytic converters, it will run a lot better. Let's say you're getting 10psi out of that turbo on a 318. Stock, the magnum 318 makes 230hp at 4100rpm and 295ftlb at 3000rpm. With no other changes, you should expect about 375hp and 450-500ftlb torque (maybe less, turbos can do strange things to the torque curve). If you twist the tail on that 318 to closer to 300hp na, 10psi boost should see you to about 500hp. Definitely going to need methanol/water injection, though.

It's a draw through system with a carb. Turbos that supply air only can use an intercooler and are fuel injected.

Yeah, fill that intercooler with an air fuel mix then burp......

I wonder if you could use an automatic transmission radiator as a low-budget intercooler with a manual transmission turbo.
@tyronebiggums59644 жыл бұрын
You could do that. The engine would most likely LOSE power, but you could do that. Look at the size of the throttle blade on a dead stock 1bbl. slant 6 engine. It is MUCH larger that the largest automotive transmission cooler inlet. Any cooling effect from the trans. cooler would be more than negated by the massive restriction of the relatively tiny passages in the trans cooler.

You should never block off the heat to that manifold - you need all the heat you can get to stave off the icing and fuel balling from high velocity temp drop. She'll go lean.

Unless a giant turbo is bolted to the carb
@patrickbrown31354 жыл бұрын
@@fastinradfordable the turbo itself will not overcome the extreme freezing temperatures inside that manifold. Guarantee the Pontiac 301 this draw-thru came off of, still has an exhaust heated manifold.

That's called a good eye, between the head gasket & the milled head sharp edge! Us old guys are legion as l have been called but it's just experience nothing special.

Even under Force Induction you want smooth flow, that intake adapter is garbage and you will see good gains by semi porting that head
@aaronbarnes89384 жыл бұрын
The stock bottom end will be fine just like you said add ring gap. You should E85 it and run 12-14lbs and let it fly.
@79tazman4 жыл бұрын
you have to have a proper carb to run e85 all he needs is water meth injection and pump gas right now that set up won't run that kind of boost and if it did it would be inefficient big time

It had burrs that need to be deburred so its nice and smooth
