I have a 79 F150 someone swapped a 360 FE into what seems like years ago, I had it freshened up and had a 390 crank put in it to stroke it out. It's made me love these engines so much, they sound amazing, last forever, run so smooth and have tons of torque. Much better off than with a 351m/400. Only thing I hate is the intake design.

I have been racing since the late 60s and I have never had a new race car work off the trailer. It always takes many passes to get it consistent. So all of you who who watch these reality shows and think that is what happens you need to build a car. Tony and the crew will sort the car out so be patient.

I have to agree with you. I think that the only reasons so many of these modern weenies run their "tuners" on a short strip are, 1) they can claim "impressive" times, and 2) most of them top out at around 100 and would make singularly unimpressive full-length runs. The lowering of the bar continues...

Nothing wrong with the 1/8th mile culture, us central ohioans been doing it for many generations. If a car is tuned to run it's best in the 1/8th then it will never disappoint when its run in the 1/4 because getting the best 60, 330 and 660ft is what drag racing is all about.

For the life of me I cannot understand why you would use a piece of plywood covered in fiberglass for the access panel to the starter in the Miata when a simple sheet metal panel and rivet-nuts would be such a more elegant solution that would not be susceptible to oil degradation or fire, and never mind be much stronger against any possible shrapnel entering the drivers compartment even if that risk is relatively low. Like my first shop teacher told my class on the very first day of class “Think before you do,” and always remember the the “5 P’s of life ‘Prior, Planning, Prevents, Poor, Performance,’” and “never assume anything because it will make an ass out of you and me.”

Once again, it's all about the money. 1/8th mile means getting people down and off the track faster, so more cars can run in the same amount of time. Every minute the track is open is more money they are spending. Now if more people are interested in racing and they can pack more people into the same amount of time, the track makes more money!! It also means far less repair on the track and lower speeds with more break down time, so less wrecks. 1/8th mile is all about MONEY.....

I grew up in the Northeast where drag racing is mostly 1/4 mile. Now live in SC where most tracks are 1/8 mile so I travel to Atlanta dragway to race. Apparently Atlanta Dragway has been sold to a developer, last race is scheduled for Oct 16. My car runs about 95 MPH in the 1/8th and a little under 120 in the 1/4. Like most street cars mine doesn't have the HP to accelerate a great deal in the second 1/8. So 1/8 mile racing makes sense but I still like the 1/4.

I’ve gone to Maple Grove near Reading, Pa my entire life, which is 1/4 mile. However, my favorite track is Beaver Springs Dragway in the middle of the state. It can run 1/4, but for the most part is 1/8. I’ve always enjoyed 1/4 mile, however, I find top fuel boring. The race is over so quickly I can’t enjoy it. I feel like a mindless bird watching it happen, attracted to shiny things and quick movement. 1/8 seems to be where it’s at for more grass roots racing. There’s a greater variety of cars competing and the barriers of entry are low if one wants to get started. It feels more in line with the sort of racing that existed when the sport was created

Hey uncle tony, I'm sure you are aware of this but please don't forget to address the lack of a residual valve in that disk brake master cylinder. Just thinking that you have so many things going on you may be human and overlook the lack of a residual pressure valve in the rear port on the factory front disk master. Before commenting folks, the port with the small reservoir goes to the rear drum brakes and will have a residual valve in it.

Is the 40# of weight savings really worth going back to drum brakes for the extra hassle they are to replace and the less effectivenss of disk brakes?? I would feel much safer running down a drag stip being able to stop and if really wanted more weight savings I'd go with a newer disk setup replacement. I know brakes don't make the car go like you mentioned in the Ford pickup troubleshooting, but stopping can be important when going fast ;)
