I was worried about trying to teach this. I heard it felt like a Lacerda game from another channel and I dropped my pledge. I'll back it for $1 though, lock in the KS price, it looks neat.

Theme integration, it’s more along a Lacerda, but mechanically, it’s more of a Pfister.

I don’t play lacerda. so I can’t comment on that. but as someone who doesn’t, it wasn’t nearly as difficult as I was dreading. Pampero which I recently covered was harder to learn and teach without a doubt

Lacerda would mean it's integrated soup of tight mechanisms in a loop. This one really isn't. Pfister-ish? Maybe.

They did a GREAT job with Endless Winter in fixing the issues the game had during the Kickstarter (and it had quite a few!). I've played this on TTS and it's decent but it also has issues that might have made me back out. Their development blog post pinpointed and fixed a few of the issues I had and they aren't done, so I've decided to trust them once again on this one :)

As a psychologist i so wanted to love this game. In the end i thought it was just a soulless euro gaming machine with turns which took way to long, too many mechanisms for its own good which makes it very AP prone (and i love Lacerda games, Kanban EV f.e.). I will try it again, but maybe im just done with this genre (nowadays im leaning more towards more interactive games like Root, Maria, Twilight Struggle and even more Ameritrashy games like Nemesis) :)

I'm on the fence with this one. It's been a struggle to grapple with the decision to back or not. We really enjoy lighter games that have elements of this, like Wingspan and Everdell. The complexity really intrigues me but the question is, will I be able to get this to the table enough to justify the price. Some of the best-value games in my collection, in terms of price per play, are consistently lighter games. Love Letter, Azul, & Wingspan have provided hours upon hours of entertainment with such a low cost. A game at the table that you enjoy is better than a game on the shelf that you love.

Looks great -but I'm in the same camp as you - I'm not a hard core gamer - just a social fun gamer - so lighter , quicker stuff is perfect - plus some people who played it online complained about run away leader - this might not be correct - but run away is super bad for longer games - unless super fun ( compete with yourself as well )

Great review, Chris! Enjoyed every second. One item I was hoping you would dwell more on is theme. May I ask you here to tell me how thematic you found this game? I'm hoping it really comes through, because I applaud its uniqueness and creativity. The aesthetics are, in my opinion, 10/10. Thanks!

Thanks for the high level overview. The synergy may be 2 + 2 = 5 for this game. I hope the nightmare expansion is an excellent addition. The add-on is uninteresting to me-trick taking game. I’m sure some people would enjoy the art in an unrelated game. How many games did you play to warrant the “I’m not good at this game” comment and how where did you not optimize as well?

3 or so. my mind just doesn’t do long term strategy well and that’s not just this game but any heavier euro in general. but that being said I felt as someone who was like that this was easier for me to do than ones in the past. now the argument you could make though is that just me getting better than I think at this type or is it the game that allows for that…
@only1kenoli2 жыл бұрын
@ got it! I think this game will be one where I teach and then lose. My wife kills me in games after playing ~3 games lol somehow I teach her and she learns from my gameplay and then dominates. It’s all wonderful.
@jortega13812 жыл бұрын
You say you are more confident teaching this one than others you have played recently. What do you compare this to, complexity wise? I have never seen you covering such a difficult game. Is it up there with Vinhos? The Gallerist? Trickerion? Anachrony? How long did it take you to learn? to teach? Thank you for a great review. I have seen so much coverage of this game, and yet, I can't make up my mind about it.
2 жыл бұрын
Pampero as the most recent. It was easier than that in both learning and teaching for us. Learning was actually easy as you went along relatively speaking considering the rules aren’t final. less non intuitive actions or minutia than I was expecting than in similar games. not sure what to compare it to though sorry! like you said, not my usual so the frame of reference is smaller. but even say like a couple earlier kickstarters non Worker placement like Fractal that I played at the beginning of the year.

My wife is a therapist and really wants me to get this at retail. But im concerned about getting this. Half the people who play Endless Winter say its amazing, the other half say it's a mechanism soup with too many interconnected parts. I think UM will be the same and i don't know which camp i will be in

Then the safe bet is to wait and if you like what you see later, trade for it from someone who falls in the camp of mechanism soup!

Thanks for your thoughts on the game Chris! What is your opinion on the best player count or in other words do you expect this game to have a high downtime in a 3 or 4 player game? Thank you. Greets from Germany
2 жыл бұрын
I think I’d prefer 2-3 personally. I don’t think there’s too much downtime though given the relatively limited overall either place a work vs recall being the main two things to do. that helps streamline it considerably comparatively

@@Exozik I would say a lot of the classics are classics for a reason, as much as I enjoy chasing the next shiny thing these are here to stay: Agricola (super tight which not everybody love and prefer caverna but to me the occupation cards give so much replayability), A Feast For Odin (complete opposite, total sandbox), Viticulture, Everdell, Castles of Burgundy, Terraforming Mars, Wingspan, Spirit Island (if you consider that euro co-op) and Mage Knight as a euro oriented adventure game. Games I liked but sold anyway: Great western Trail, Targi, Lost ruins of Arnak Game on my to try list: Brass Also I mostly play two player with my wife so if a euro is best at 3+ I usually would not look for it.

This game has a great setting, but the mechanisms don't seem thematic at all. It's essentially just your good-old-euro of optimization and lower than average interaction. Great artwork though!
@Exozik2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean the mechanisms aren't thematic at all? I felt that most mechanics here are linked very closely to what you're doing as a psychologist. Treating patient, publishing research, gaining reputation, etc.

@@Exozik Just because they are named such doesn't make them thematic though. It doesn't feel like what the theme us about.

@@KristoVaher Maybe it is me but I can't recall a game that came close to give me the feeling of actually doing the things the game is making me do. No game ever made me feel like I was in a simulation or something. Thou, some manage to make me create scenery in my head like Eldritch Horror. I am not sure if this is what you are talking about here.
