Just thought you should know that this is really helping people. I notice that your hand is very much without unnecessary tension. I’m striving for that. Also, I actually like that you play it at full tempo with swing eighth notes and accenting the backbeats. I’ll slow it down with the YT cog wheel if need be.

The learner, myself, learns more from understanding what goes wrong, than what is good. Wonderful how you contrast common mistakes ( such as not swinging ) with better form. A lesser teacher would show only good form, and the student would go shed and come back, and the lesser teacher would say, "you made this error." And the cycle would go on forever until the student exhausted all poor techniques. Your video shows the learning student what to avoid, at the outset. Wonderful teaching technique.

The left hand's rhythm is the 'engine of the song'. That is a great way of explaining it and is one of those 'key' phrases for me. Yes, that's a good one right there. I am at that stage right now ! You might need to see the notes on the baseline. See them and listen by the measure. Practice it till you get the muscle memory and speed it up. then go to the next bar and do the same. learn to read the notes and play bar by bar until you can do it without thinking. You will see the pattern for it always repeats. It is much the same for both left and right hand. You will get where you recognize runs, arpeggios, octaves, and grace notes. A good teacher is quite a help. Good luck to you for I love to play but I learned best with a good teacher. It is worth it.

sorry to be so dumb but I'd love a clear text list of what notes. Because I don't follow watching the fingers easily especially at speed and you confuse me when you begin and say you're going to do CGCGC and then immediately start using A ! It wouldn't hurt to just write them short lines in the comments - what the notes are - would it?

+Eeco Rijken Rapp Sorry for my question. I doń,t know english enough well but ... IF i try play with my left hand fast like you on this video, after about 1 min i feel pain in my forearm. For begin is a little pain but after next 30 seconds my arm cannot hołd this tempo. And now is my question. 1. It,s normall reaction IF i didn,t play before like this. My beginning with boogie style will be painfull but with time my arm will be more strenght and can hold this tempo (or faster) for very long time. 2. I feel pain in my left forearm cause i do something wrong and i need to teach my left hand how to play fast but without tired. What option is correct?

Hi. I am just a beginner, but that is lots of fun too. I really am enjoying your videos more than any other rag-time or boogie woogie master. I think it may prove important to me to copy your fingerings as closely as possible, but something seems a bit strange to me, in that by the middle of this lesson I notice that you are using your thumb double-duty on the 2nd two examples. What I mean is, by the time you include the Eb +E in your bass roll, & come back down to finish the C chord, you hit with your thumb twice. The very same thing happens in the next example when you strike the Eb +A series & come back down to finish it--you use your thumb twice, again, rather than arrange some other fingering. Of course when you do it, there is absolutely no rhythm lag or such. But I can't help but wonder if this is something which came easily to you. Or what? Who could say what Albert Ammons used? Look, maybe it is not important, but, you know we beginners are only afraid of learning bad habits, & re-inforcing them as we practice. I beg your pardon for the long post, & I realize that eventually I will be able to use my own fingerings if they are more comfortable. Another thing we beginners fear is just bunching up our fingers so that we can't ever keep the rhythm nice....I am reminded of that book by Peter Sylverster: He had a left hand like God. ♥Alan*
