Just a note on ADS-B Exchange. The owner, Dan Streufert, sold it to JetNet which is owned by a private equity firm, for what some estimate is about $20 million and a $200K/year job. All of the developers who actually built and maintained ADS-B Exchange are no longer with the company and hundreds of feeders have shut down their data streams and redirected them to new community data aggregators. Best I can tell, the ADS-B Exchange database also hasn't been updated since the sale so the map is showing incomplete or out of date information for some aircraft.

year later question. Where did everyone go to? I signed up for Wingbits. They dont allow any BYOD anymore. But hoping it becomes the #1. Why not get paid to scan plane signals? 🤫🤷

After a few days tweaking settings, I have my setup running and feeding to Flight Radar 24, and Flight Aware. I may start feeding ADSB Exchange as well. The little $35 Inovato Quadra computer is doing a great job. I even put my whole setup on my hamshack solar, so that it will never go down. My entire shack is now on battery with solar panels. ADSB is so much fun!

Nice timing on these videos. I just picked up the 1090 dongle and ADSB-E image at Hamcation a few weeks ago. I have a Pi 3 and 4 laying around, not being used so I though I would put one of them to work. I hope to make the time to get it set up this month.

We did that on a live stream - I have a mag mount, a PCB based and the "rubber ducks" in the video. I'll have panel mount SMAs, so in theory I can connect any antenna that comes my way.

I've had alot of fun with ADSB. Need a much better antenna, just have indoors that small whip that comes with the rtl-sdr. Even then I get hits from maybe a 20 mile radius or so.

Very nice job! I have question,may someone can give me some advice.In the recen years we more and more RC drones with raspberry pi and some of them have control and telemetry tru 4G which makes them all most unlimited range(limited only by the battery).There is any way to implement the ADSB-A,ADSB-B, EDSB-E on the raspberry pi en instead of viewing into the monitor to trigger an event when the dron have the risk of colliding with an aircraft if by chance they have the same altitude for some reason.Make like ADSB on board rada acting collision avoidance? Any advice will help.Thank you all

Forgive the dumb question: how is having your own receiver better than just viewing the free ADSB feed?
@temporarilyoffline

Mostly because you know it's uncensored, and secondarily the feed comes from people like us that feed the public system. Just a fun project.

So I'm commenting 11 months later so you may have totally moved but just in case a question and a comment. First the question. Since I am seeing that ADS-Exchange maybe on the way out is this still the optimal way to set up and ADSB receiver using the Raspberry pi? As for the comment you do an excellent job explaining things however it is very confusing knowing what computer/system you are operating from for each step in the process. Also the use of which wifi what is connected to what is confusing.
@temporarilyoffline
@temporarilyoffline 11 ай бұрын
ADSB-Exchange is going away, but you don't need to "feed" any particular network to enjoy. As far as I know, the fallout hasn't settled yet and there is no new method to install the image - If you want to go it solo: github.com/wiedehopf I can see where the Wifi can get a little confusing. You'd connect to the auto-hotspot from your raspberry pi to configure the network...once that is done, you'd connect from your local network. If you're just going to set this up as a display off on a shelf, It will work without the internet, and wired is even easier. That probably didn't help any either ;-)

@@temporarilyoffline No that helps a lot and thanks for the reply. I have my HAM license and I'm a long time IT guy, mostly mainframe stuff, and have a cursory knowledge of a lot of all the newer technologies so I'm tech savvy in the broad sense. However I know nothing about the Raspberry PI and I am looking for a way to set up this ADSB device without having to go too deep in to the rabbit hole. Just being lazy I guess. again thanks for responding and take care.

A separate low noise amplifier + filter for 1090MHz close to the antenna and the cheapest rtl-sdr is probably in the same price category (or lower) as these specialized (crippled) rtl-sdr's with built-in filter, but it will be more flexible and will give better results. To get good results with rtl-sdr's that contain filter and amplifier, you have to get them close to the antenna. Then you need a very long USB cable or ethernet cable to move everything close to the antenna. But that is a bit of an inconvenience, so it is unlikely to be done. I haven't tested it, i just read the amazon listing and came to this conclusion based on prior experiences. In other words: It's just the opinion of a random person on the internet. ;)
@temporarilyoffline
@temporarilyoffline Жыл бұрын
Totally agree - coax is the devil we dance with and in this design, I've moved everything to the antenna! Very little coax is planned for this kit.

I am sorry I have to correct you on @11:18 ACARS data, ACARS data is some what equivalent to APRS. ACARS makes noises in analog... Where as ADSB is totally silent to the human ear and digital signal.

@@temporarilyoffline i hope nobody does this, but it strikes me as a very dangerous thing to have unencrypted adsb. a very simple steering system on a large sugar rocket that compares gps position to adsb position could take down an aircraft. this is off the shelf hobby grade technology. even in the unlikely event that the pilot was warned, he cant turn adsb off thanks to faa regulations . much as adsb is fun for us, they need to go back to the drawing board and add at least a level of encryption
@temporarilyoffline
@temporarilyoffline Жыл бұрын
There already exists technologies to do what you're saying, that can't be encrypted. I agree in spirit, but I'd suggest that encrypting something that is already easily discoverable is just adding/asking for trouble. @@noimnotarobotcanubeleiveit7024
