Bess of Hardwick is one of my historical heroines. One of her houses, Temple Newsam, is not far from where I live. I enjoy sewing so her prolific and expert needlework is inspirational. I have also always loved the fact that you can see Hardwick Hall from the M1 motorway and it's a sign that home is not far away. Merry Christmas to all at HH.

Professor L is my favorite historian, hands down. Why? She expresses her passion for the place, person or event she's teaching us and you can almost see in her eyes, that she places herself in their shoes almost as if she remembers that time period. She can even teach by retelling old stories with her own magic and newly discovered additions. More Suzie on HH lol !!!!

Tasked with the job of being Mary, Queen of Scots jailer, Elizabeth of Shrewsbury was duly rewarded for her loyalty to Elizabeth I. She knew her place, and expanded to fill it fully. She was fortunate in her marriages, was dealt many a lucky hand and played them magnificently.

Bess was married four times, inherited a great deal of money, and made the rest of her wealth through her ownership of mines and glassmaking workshops. The use of glass in this house was like an advertisement for her business. While she was a "friend of the Queen", she was also a thorn in her side, as well as in the side of her half-sister Mary Queen of Scots, because she presumed to compete with them with this ostentatious display of wealth. Personally, I can't grin about these gross displays of money and power, when you consider the vast suffering that underlay all of it.

"As a woman in Medieval/Renaissance England How could you get wealthy and powerful enough to build a house like this?" The answer is rather simple and easy. 1) Marry someone wealthy, 2) have a number of rich relatives die leaving you as the only heir, 3) be Royal (and while a Countess isn't Royalty it is in the nobles heirarchy), 4) control (notice I said control not own) highly productive and profitable land and/or 5) any combination of the above. As for not being able to own property you COULD manage property for an underage heir.

What I don’t understand is where in the house you could go to keep warm in the winter? I don’t see how a fireplace could keep a room warm where all the heat goes to the ceiling so far above. Then you also have to recognize the obscene wealth a house like this represents compared to the average person at that time. Nobody even builds houses that size any more except, perhaps, the odd dictator.
