A lesson for everyone from this: If Aaron lost his jacket his keys and phone would've been gone and he would've been stranded out in the cold while soaking wet. Better to keep your keys and phone locked in a pocket in your bib which you can't lose if you fall though. Or in another pocket of an undershirt or something if you think your bibs could slip off somehow.

Well, a 5 gallon bucket filled with gear would float on its side, the heavier side down, then water would slowly start filling the bucket.. as it does the bucket would fill up and sink heavy side or bottom first. I can easily conceive how it could end up on the bottom of the lake right side up and gear / contents intact

Hey brother for what it means, I've been subbed for a long time and you really promote safe boating and safe behavior out on the water, and you've likely saved a few lives from people buying the life jackets you wear and little things like that. You just don't go if the ice is iffy. Not worth dying over a fish, or a video. He's extremely lucky he got out. He's in good physical condition, and that saved him this time, but youth doesn't last forever. He got lucky. If that sled had flipped and a battery or the auger gets tangled on his clothes he would be dead. You know how hard it is to swim with boots full of water? Stay safe people.

I did my first day of the ice fishing season today. I was definitely thinking of you today. I thoroughly checked the ice on my way out and it was all good to snowmobile on. I rode along the shore anyway just to be safe. I started to ride out on the ice and I thought I better check this area too since the ice thickness is different all over the lake. It turned out to be thick enough to walk on but would have been very risky to ride on. I left my sled on the shore and walked out instead. I ended up catching my PB Brook Trout on this gorgeous sunny day. Thanks so much for sharing your story and making us all a little safer, including myself today.

The scariest experience I have had while falling through the ice is I was on my large pond with very deep spots and many springs in the marsh and i thought I was plenty safe because I couldn't even break through with my tool I always check even when it was the first of February because of the beavers and the amount of springs in the pond and I have fallen through before while running my trap line. I was going down the stream through the Marsh since there was a beautiful set of car and yote tracks I realized I went to far and was of my property so I didn't feel comfortable setting any traps even close to my property like just incase of disputes and while on my way back I started hearing it cracking but figure I was ok since I was following my own tracks and like is said the ice was plenty thick 4"to 6" so falling through was never even a thought. I got about 100 feet from the beginning of my pond and there was an extremely loud crack and I took one step and boom I went straight through my first fear was almost panic because I didn't want to be sucked under the ice because I thought forsure there must of been a strong current to make thin enough ice in order for me to fall through but all of a sudden I realized I was standing in water up to the middle of my stomach but the extremely scary thing is I was about 2 to 3 feet below the bottom of the ice! There was about 5 feet of air underneath the ice and it was completely hollow since when it froze the water went down tremendously. I am quite experience when it comes through going through the ice just from years of running trap lines but this was a new problem that I've never experienced before and I haven't read or watched anything about this. My phone was of course soaked and shut off and I thought for sure there would be no way of getting back to the top especially without breaking through again even if I did. But fortunately after about 5 to 10 minutes I was able to figure out how to use the big grass humps left from muskrats and limbs of trees from the beavers and was able to make something strong enough to get up high enough to pull myself out I still thank God that the ice was strong enough to pull myself out even though there was no water underneath it. I still think to this day about how lucky I was to be able to get out and how crazy it was that I walked over the same spot twice without falling through and especially about breaking through such thick ice it's absolutely crazy how weak ice is when there's no water underneath it I mean this was a solid five or six inches of ice where I broke through. I thank God that I've done tons of research on cold weather survival and I always keep away to make fire even though I was less than a mile away from my house and only a quarter mile away from my cabin there's no way you can travel that far when it's negative 30° f out and your three quarters of the way soaked just to get to a point where I was safe again on the ice my clothes were completely froze. Because of my research that I've done and my parents and the supplies I brought like I said having a inability to make fire I always keep that in a waterproof container with a few layers of protection so I was able to make a fire and hunker down for an hour or two to dry off enough to make it home. Still scares me to this day remembering the site I was looking at with the whole above my head and looking forward and seeing all the air in between the ice and water basically look like a giant cave I was in and even though the whole was only two or three feet above my head it looked like it was 20 feet above my head with the sun shining down in it

Aaron you are a crazy man!!! Stay safe out there. Watching the video again at the begining you said, "We are confident about the ice out there!" Famous last words. I got myself into a tricky situation last Monday. I hiked down a mountain to access a spot loaded with Coho Salmon. Had a blast hooked maybe 30 fish. Stayed a bit too late. Hiking out I took th wrong ridge and hit a cliff. Had to hike back down and go a different way. In no time I was in pitch BLACKNESS! Trying to scale up on my hands and knees straight up a sharp heavily wooded, slippery, mossy, muddy slope. Luckily I had a head lamp. Dragging four rods and four fish getting snagged on everything, extremely fatigued and on nothing remotely like a trail. I messaged the wife my location since I figured I was in a little bit of trouble. At one point my hat and head lamp got knocked off and went rolling down the mountain. Had to descend and get it. Finally I got to the new growth of the clear cut where I knew I was parked. I had to crash basically through dense new growth. I fell on my face so many times and was so exhausted when I saw the flash of my license plate through the trees I had the greatest sense of relief ever. Why do we risk so much to fish??? Yesterday I was out with the whole family for our first outing on the ice, 2.5 inches of decent ice. It's going to be a great season! Let the Freeze begin!!! I think all your ice safety videos jumping through the ice have come in very handy for you! Thanks for the honest warning from personal experience.

Nice Work, Brew. I’ve retrieved some stuff from that depth before as well & it made me very happy to’ve gotten nearly everything back. I pulled up a 12v marine batt with 20lb braid on a Shimano Calcutta 250C on an All-Star Med Action rod, then recovered 2 rods. I let a few items be, but got the irreplaceable items (dad’s old Abu 5500Cs) within 20 mins. I also scored a drag chain & an anchor that weren’t mine. So, I get it. Nice Work, Pal.

Maybe attach some sort of float, like a plastic bottle, to the sled by connecting it to the corners with rope. When not in use, tuck it off to the side, but if this happens again, the float will rise and it should be easy to hook onto and pull all the gear up with the sled. Just a thought for sketchy ice.

Note to all. I went thru several years ago, 25 ft of water. I was fully clothed for ice conditions. I was wearing a PFD and it saved my life. PFD is a good idea and helps keep you warm. I weighed myself when I got home with my gear on and I was 100 lbs heavier. PFD will save your life!

My dad broke through one fall as well. He went out before daybreak to a spot or as least the spot he was the day before. Wound up breaking through in 17 fow. Lost all his gear and almost his life. The only thing that saved him was his snowmobile suit trapped enough air to help him get out. He would up crawling a quarter mile before he dared to cross back to his truck. He drove home. Was still dark. Mom asked what he forgot. He said a life jacket. Would up with pneumonia. Damn near died of that too. Be careful. No ice is ever completely safe.

If you reading this, there is a 50-50 chance you have tried to power your equipment up... If no, wait another few days before you try! Unpowered electronics can not short... Where most people make their mistake is trying to send power before ALL moisture is removed! Good luck and happy fishing!

This is why you need open water scuba certification, so you can rent some scuba gear and tank at a local shop and get your stuff from the bottom of the lake/river when you lose it. Or go to a local dive shop and pay a local diver a few bucks to get your stuff back. I used my scuba gear to pull a buddy's outboard out of 50 feet of water from a lake in Ontario when it came of his boat while he was driving. Definitely comes in handy.

I once saw two women and a man go through the ice. He helped the women get back on top of the ice but could not save himself or be saved. Almost fifty years later I can still hear the screams. Please be careful.

A few years ago I walked out to the middle of a lake all by myself on sketchy ice. On the way back the ice was cracking all over the place unless I walked real slow. Never again, I told myself, would I walk out alone on a lake that's more than chest deep! Glad you made it out ok, no fish is worth your life!
