Undamming of the Klamath River brings hopes of renewal
Native people campaigned for decades to dismantle dams on the Klamath River. They hope the largest dam removal project in history will help save salmon and restore the river's ailing ecosystem, enabling them to keep their fishing traditions alive.

I was at the Iron gate dam yesterday. They were stocking 400,000 fall chinook fry. Amazing work by the people, tribes and families. So proud!

The collapse of modernity is a beautiful thing. Blessings to those who fight to be in right relation with the land. There's strong medicine in this story if you listen. May we all break the metaphorical dams that hold Rivers back! Gratitude to the Yurok people for being a shining example of Custodianship - what it means to be a human being in relation with the Land. ❤

@@joeschmidt4991They will return. They were trucking them in and around the dams. That isn't sustainable. Same with sturgeon in WI on the Wolf. It is the dams that destroyed the river bottoms depositing sediment; the entire ecological system of it. Salmon can be spawned in stations then reintroduced. Their habitat has to be restored for their survival w/o us.

I completely agree some elders took my wife and her sister in during winter with car trouble until Bigfoot towing could return their car to Yreka ford dealer. I lived in Horse Creek And Hornbrook helped with fish surveys with Karoke below iron gate when I worked at Blue Heron.

Good for the river... Dont complain about your water bill increasing by 150% or more, you asked for it.
@debrapaulino918
@debrapaulino918 Күн бұрын
We will figure it out. Getting rid of all dams is necessary for the future of life. Anyone being opposed because of a rate increase is why progress has been slow. A bill is more important to you people than the survival of a river that supports life. Awful. Wrong priorities. 100-150 yrs ago people didn't know the devastation it would cause. Now you do and don't care.

So you destroyed free clean hydroelectric energy and water reserves? Damns are good for humans. So now what happens during a dry season? No water for anyone? Talk about selfish.
@debrapaulino918
@debrapaulino918 Күн бұрын
People lived w/o dams for thousands of years and knew how. River plains are not meant to be built on. The rivers around the world are a mess. You cannot keep going on a destructive path because you say it's clean hydroelectric and provides water while it simultaneously destroys habitat. If there was no problem with it they wouldn't be taken down. You think it's fuzzy animal loving snowflakes who worship nature? What is wrong with people like you? Instead of weighing in on your immediate disadvantage it will cause, why are you unable to think long term? What is in your head?

It was a many sided issue. With people still split by the decision. But the dams were very old badly designed and contributed to recent large salmon die offs. Those die offs were because of a neurological toxin released by a blue-green algae that blooms in the stagnant warm waters behind the dams. The dams themselves produced no significant amounts of electricity. The original stated intention was flood control. And later they became water diverting structures for agriculture. But the original design flaws were never addressed. The simple fact is that in calorie value the Klamath salmon runs can out produce the Klamath agricultural irrigation farms. In addition to that clean water you can drink is more valuable than toxin laced water you can’t let your day swim in.

@@nelsonyurok Exactly what toxin are you referring to? Algae doesnt produce "toxins", what it does do absorb massive amounts of oxygen in low flow environments.
