My favorite at the Angeles market is orange sweet potato "Kamote" 55 peso a kilo for a 10 kilo bag. I put full fat, plain yogurt and unsalted butter on them since they are pretty dry plain. I think the beef at the market is grass fed "very tough" 450p a kilo, have to cook it in a slow cooker crockpot submerged in water with bay leaf, thyme and broth cube for 10 hours or so with sweet potatoes. Turns it into tender and moist beef that falls apart I feel great eating this way. Took me a while to learn how to cook here with the local whole foods. Avoiding ultra-processed foods. Also can do low salt adobo for chicken and liver. If I have to eat out Filipino food at the local carinderia is the best IMO.

While I was in Angeles city for three weeks there were two brown outs. One lasted for maybe five hours but the hotels have backup generators so it's not an issue. Now one thing I hated was the burning of garbage. My hotel had wall air conditioners and there were times I had to shut it off cause it was bringing in the smoke into my room. I hate that you see areas of trash on the ground and you wonder don't these people care about how their property looks. I know I won't live in the city ever. But being diabetic it would be hard living here. In the US they make so many things you can buy that has no sugar in it. Here it's limited to find items you can get everywhere in America. Cough drops are in the candy Isle which took me a while to find.

Mixed bag of info. Some info they are giving is somewhat whack and will vary wildly based on boots on the ground shopping around. Seems completely crazy to slam commenters in general as uninformed. Some of us have have been doing this stuff for ages. I've lived here 13+ years and have lived in many places including cities and provinces and of the guys I know I'm the newbie haha. Renting a place and fixing it up isn't the exception here, it's practically the rule and half the guys I know have been doing that for 10+ years. One good tip that Mike implied by giving the "true price" of his place is that you should calculate the "rent" based on rent+improvement cost then divide by how long you will be there. I would also advise visiting the location at multiple times of day and on a Friday night to check sound levels and also ask people about flooding. You don't want to be stuck in a multi year lease where every neighbor has a 24/7 barking dog and rooster farm or that has 6 inches of flood water in your living room 6 times a year.
@Ex-Pensive_Expat3 күн бұрын
Yes calculating the total cost amortized over the term is the way to judge the deal. Less than $100 in my case. I can't speak for Mike but you're apparently not the type of commenter we were talking about. We were discussing those who have never been here or those who say you can't live here on less than $3,000 USD per month. Nothing general about that in anyway. That was the entire point of the conversation. We also discussed the widely varied rental costs, brown outs etc etc depending on where in the Philippines and that is a fact. Nothing Whack about that. Just mainly those who are just plain negative no matter what is said. So probably not talking about you
@AChrisPostal3 күн бұрын
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat All good. I'm fully on your side on the living price stuff. Someone saying you can't live on less than $3k is so wrong I would probably say something nasty about them lol. I could live here on $300 if I really wanted to go native so 1/10th of that. And could live near kingly level for $1600. For whack I was mainly talking about the dental info something to the effect of "highest price anywhere 8k" is decidedly wrong, the most advertised places in AC are near USA (midwest) prices. AC on AVERAGE is not really ~that cheap for dental, yes there are deals if you shop around but you really need to ask what base materials will be used (titanium, tilite, porcelain etc). But, I can empathize that it's hard to give general info here on most topics without it being "wrong" in many areas of the Philippines. I'm living in Subic at the moment but lived in AC for a long time and several other areas. I may be a bit more over-info'd on the dental topic since it's the reason I first arrived here 13 years ago and have work done as recently as 6 months ago. There are cheaper countries for dental for sure but not if you already paid for travel to here. and would have to pay to travel to them because the prices are not different enough.
@Ex-Pensive_Expat3 күн бұрын
@@AChrisPostal The price quote was from a dentist office in AC and two quotes I got in Porac. 15K was the highest from a Dentist who also gave me the 8k Quote. 8K at the office in Porac or 15K at the office he worked at in Clark. Just watched Michael’s video with you so I decided to become unsubscribe I used to live in Bataan In the late 80s and early 90s you know much simple house than that in a place called Lamao Did some Christian mission work there? I miss it like crazy really enjoyed your video. I will have to try to keep in touch in case I’m able to come back. I had heart surgery five years ago had to retire but now I don’t know if I can handle the heat there.
@Ex-Pensive_Expat3 күн бұрын
Personally I feel I am healthier since I moved here. I feel better in ways associated with eating healthier, less processed foods. I buy mostly all from the public market. Bataan is about an hour away. I'm guessing the heat is the same as when you were here. I stay indoors when it's too hot. Same as I did in southern Ca. I do my shopping during the early hours of the day. Then there is also Baguio. Maybe come for a visit in the cooler weather time of the year and see how it goes for you with aircon etc. Let me know if I can help you my friend!!
@andywynn43112 күн бұрын
@ I used the speech recognition to type it is supposed to say I subscribed ! I have so many friends and relatives there so it would not be too hard. I’m still just wondering about the heat and travel. Thank you for responding. we have a lot of family and friends here that are Filipino. It has been great to know. Many are even worked at Filipino store when I was younger every time I got laid off I would help my friend. (also had a heart problem back then) I also can speak quite a bit of Tagalog. I need to get back into it. I’m really rusty.

If there is aircon where you will be then you should do well. It was 25 degrees this morning here in Pampanga, I had to turn the fan off.

@ thank you for your response. No the only thing I didn’t get on that video was the name of the town. I just didn’t hear it properly but now I know that you are near Pampanga. many of my good friends have been from that area. One just passed away a year ago. He was the first Filipino I’ve ever met here in the states he was in karate with me a good brother in the Lord I was just thinking about him this morning if we get back to the Philippines, we will come and visit you. Your house is way better than the apartment I used to rent in Balanga We moved out about 10 days before my daughter was born right after that they had a flood 5 feet high in the apartment There was a river that ran right and back of the property and out houses hanging over the river, so our timing to move out was very good. No one was able to get sick but my wife’s town doesn’t seem to flood. It’s a little higher elevation.

Bottom Line...IF you can find the right landlord to do the deal then can work, but that's a BIG IF.
@albathoughtsofficial3 күн бұрын
Actually, it's not difficult to find a good landlord...you do have to be careful, but what you are offering to the landlord is a win-win...long term, stable passive income, and a tenant that actually cares about and wants to make improvements to the unit....I recently saw a vlog about a lady who did this exact same strategy in Bali! She signed a 10 year lease and not only transformed her old bungalow, but added in a nice swimming pool! All in, she calculated her average monthly rent, including all the improvements worked out to be about $600 per month.
@jspbipro3 күн бұрын
@albathoughtsofficial If you had a long term lease and after all the improvements the landlord decided had to move back how protected would a foreigner be in court?
@albathoughtsofficial3 күн бұрын
@@jspbipro A Foreigner would be well protected as long as their lease agreement was properly reviewed by an attorney. Attorney fees are very reasonable in the Philippines. Also Landlords are prohibited from evicting tenants without lawful or justifiable reasons, even if the property owner seeks to use the property themselves. The other good news is that in the Philippines the contracts and legal system use English, a huge plus. In other non English speaking countries, you would need to get your contract translated, but in case of any legal issue, that foreign court would rely on the original foreign language version of the contract.

The human body has been honed by countless generations of hardship and deprivation to survive darn near anything... except ease and plenty. Those conditions have never existed in any one location long enough for humans to learn how to cope. Anyone who thinks "retirement" means sitting on their butt doing nothing might as well open a vein and get it over with. At least then they won't spend a decade or more making the people around them miserable.

@@Ex-Pensive_Expat When I was young and foolish I believed I was serving humanity by trying to free people from the prisons they constructed for themselves. Then I grew up and realized humanity doesn't want to be served. It resents any attempt to serve it and those who persist are fortunate if the worst that happens to them is martyrdom. So I decided to put my efforts into things I found enjoyable or at least interesting and leave the rest of the world alone.

I never really much spent time in my younger years doing anything more than being generous if a friend truly needed it. Now a days it seems many gain courage from the videos of my experiences. That I feel passionate about. I only make videos when I am feeling inspired. Most of my contents is actually responding to thoughts and questions I get in the comments. I tried a couple of times to do some research on a few topics but didn't feel comfortable about making those type of videos. Only if I feel motivated and inspired to share an experience that may help others, is the only type of videos I make. Ever

@Ghekko-kw3zz3 күн бұрын
@@Ex-Pensive_Expat pre Du30 it was defacto legal, a matter of disturbing the peace. The hash was world class & $1 a gram from Mountain province. The laws were harsh since WW2 but rarely enforced. These days it's ridiculous, 3 strikes for meth before prison vs 1 for weed. 10 years for simple possession. Everyone ends up paying their way out.
