Great video, Nathan. There's lots to like about lifepo4, and ever since they've developed "drop-in" units that are largely compatible with standard chargers, it makes the changeover costs much more bearable. Plenty of manufacturers only rate their batteries to 50oC. Weight issue aside, which is significant, I tend to work out cost per day. For those with a permanent fridge or other load used daily, it becomes total cost divided by cycle life covered by warranty. Anything beyond that is a bonus. $1,000 / 36 month warranty = $0.91 per day, which is excellent. At the other end is the casual user, say camping three weeks per year for the same 36 month warranty period, or $1,000 / 63 days = $15.87 per day, which is not much more than double the AGM. No matter how I approach a good quality lifepo4 at a reasonable price, it is really becoming a false economy to stay with AGM for mobile use.

For sure and this goes back to individual suitability and usage. These aren't going to be for everyone, but given the quantity of people upgrading their power systems, they sure can handle a lot more and much higher powered appliances. Hi Nathan, smack-on.. 99%hit the point what we are interested in. I am with you and on the same path.. Full river starter and full river AGM battery fixed with BCDC 1240D charger and ready for the next upgrade. See, same situation.. Pre 2019 the lithium batteries and BMS was not ready as it is now with the itech 120x or Amptron lithium batteries with IP 67 . But some things I need to ask which you may missed to cover or comes in a later video. Battery set up to 1 starter battery, 1 aux battery: Yes Aux batt cHarging with max 40amps from the bcdc: Yes Battery solenoid and bridging switch installed: ? Winching of the starter battery: ?? Aux battery to assist starter battery when flat by the in-cab push button: ? Here comes the crucial point: Lithium aux batt 175A max. 5 sec would be enough to assist a flat starter battery. (Means not solely starting the engine from the Lithium battery) How about :During winch operation to assist the starter battery with the lithium battery? Will it work? For how long? 5 sec or longer? What happen in and with the BMS after overload shut down?. I would ask this questions to ITechWorld, but I am not ready yet to buy now due to absence from Australia and I would need at least 3 to 4 pcs 120X for my van system also. You are our “front runner” and I’m sure your audience would be interested in the answers too. 900.- AUD/pc on special was just finished by ITechWorld and compared a good value for money Looking forward with much interest in your next video and update.. Keep the sunny side up and Best regards from the Winter cold over-here Cheers
@XploringOz2 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate. Some good questions there and there are still things I'm working on in the background for a future video. In summary though, my high powered appliances (winch and 1000W inverter) are currently hooked up to the primary battery. Given that this is still a conventional battery (not lithium) it is not recommended to have these batteries linked together. Therefore, although I have an in cab switch to bridge the batteries to assist/start the vehicle, it would not be recommended to use this as my setup currently stands. Further, the 120X does not have a CCA rating and therefore should not be used to start the vehicle. I will be doing further testing in the future and trying some other options out that would make this system run a little better and hopefully answer more questions. Cheers, Nathan.

Great comprehensive video as usual Nathan, I have fitted a ITECH World 120x in my 200 land cruiser some time ago and found it works great. I however have put it in a battery box in the rear of my wagon with the Redarc DC TO DC charger fitted to the top of the box and solar fitted on the roof. The reason I did not fit it in the engine bay because I had 2 new start batteries up front so I wanted to get my moneys worth out of them. I have had 2x 120 ITEC World batteries fitted in my Traveller caravan for over 3 years now with out any problems what so ever. I do use a Victron 712 monitoring unit in the van and is worth every cent. It is worth noting that the 120x has prismatic cells which is much better for off road use. I have never looked back since using Lithium.

Just a quick heads up on the victron settings for the Itechworld 120AH. The usable capacity is about 96-98AH, not 120AH. So you need to set the capacity to the usable capacity of the battery, not the total capacity, which it cannot deliver.
@XploringOz2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, this is a good point. I've actually run an official capacity test on the 120X and got a usable 99 amps before the BMS shut down. I guess setting it like this will give you a visible 20% reserve power. It would depend on how you want to view the gauge? Set it up this way and the battery will switch off at 20% or set the capacity at 100A and the battery will switch off at 0%. Cheers, Nathan.

Very good informative video .. But the one thing you didn't mention and that is warranty periods.. As I've found lithium warranty to be the same and even less in a lot of cases .. I got my Full River and came with a 5 year warranty at the time .. Most lithiums I've seen come with 2 or 3 years .. Meaning if my Full River fails in 4 years ill get a new battery .. Lithium fails in 4 years your up for a new battery .. Very important topic I think .. I love the idea of a new lithium but still can't justify the huge costs .. You also have to factor in the cost of upgrading all your other equipment to be lithium compatible.. Solar charge controllers and dc/dc chargers as well as 240 volt chargers..

Without charging the battery - I get 3-4 days in hot temperatures 30-40 degrees. 4-6 days in milder temperatures 20-30 degrees. 7-9 days in cooler weather under 20. This is from a 100Ah LiFePo battery running a 55 litre Waeco fridge at 2° centigrade, and also charging devices and other smaller batteries. Shading for batteries and fridge makes a big difference, direct sunlight will get that fridge working hard and sucking up the power. But with a 120 watt solar panel, this system will never run out of power and runs permanently in the back of my SUV, there is always a cool drink and plenty of power on hand in the Aussie outback.

Nathan, no one in AUS is talking about min charging temperatures for LI FE PO4 batteries, however charging a battery thats below 0 deg C is dangerous. A great video full of quality info, thanks
@XploringOz2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, yes I would agree this is something that isn't spoken about often. Like you mentioned there are few placed in Australia that would ever get down to these temps, but also keep in mind it would only take a minute or two to get that temperature up again, particularly with under bonnet application. Personally, it isn't something I have taken into consideration given the type and location of driving I do. Cheers, Nathan.

Another good vid Nathan. I have DCS under bonnet, and your assumption on off road temperatures is pretty good. On a 30 degree day, I have seen my battery temp hit 70 for short periods. this is normally on downhill low range. they drop to back to 65 on uphills, assuming that is due to the fan moving more air with the revs up. Ive also noted that temps increase quickly when you stop moving, but on the highway you can drive all day and only see temps maybe 10 degrees above ambient. Thats in a 200, so I would assume they have good airflow at higher speeds.

A Dc to Dc charger is needed for an optimum charge profile, do you know if it is ok to charge a lithium battery thru a simple isolator ? I have recently heard of hybrid lithium that can accept charge direct from an alternator which might be a better choice to replace the current deep cycle. Cheers

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the video. From what I know about isolators, it probably isn't suitable but then again, I haven't seen the voltage and amperage inputs from these units either. There are some other types, including the hybrids you talk of, however they don't have the same price tag as the 120X. Cheers, Nathan,

They dont handle heat that well.. They will stop charging. I tried one under bonnet, and it was OK when it was cold, but slow moving on a hot day, stopped charging all the time.. I ended up sticking it in the back of the car..Also the Red arc will start to back off charging at around 50 degrees I have found. I shifted this to in front of the grill as well..

Hey mate, interesting to hear. I've already done some hot weather testing with this unit with no issues yet. I've had the engine coolant temps up 26 degrees over normal, climbing very sand dunes on a 35 degree day and was continually monitoring without issue. I guess time will tell in regards to how these perform. In relation to the Redarc, have you had any problems with it up the front? I constantly monitor my state of charge through the Victron and when charge is required, I've never seen it drop below 34-36A of charge regardless of temp. Cheers, Nathan.
@jjsadv2 жыл бұрын
@@XploringOz I did have the Redarc on the fuse box, and one time it did stop charging as it got to hot. I immediately shifted it to just behind the grill, no problems after that. When it stopped ambient temps were between 40 and 45 degrees. Redarc was at around 60 degrees, measured with a IR thermometer, so expected. I had a lithium in the front, it would start to managed the current due to temps at around 50 degrees. using power out was OK at these temps, but charging ,the BMS would kick in and reduce it. I have a BT BMS so I can see the cell and BMS temps Even though most of the trips the battery was not at max temp spec, after 3 months the the battery started having charging trouble. It would reboot the BMS constantly, and the SOC meter started acting up. Presumed to be a BMS issue. So it was replaced under warranty. I shifted it to a battery box in the back on the car. I dont know for sure if it were the under bonnet temps that caused these issues, but I decided to eliminate them going forward.

@@jjsadv Hmm, sure is interesting to hear and I'm looking forward to seeing how this performs long term. Although it would be disappointing to see it cause trouble of fail, I'm hoping to be able to prove whether heat is directly correlated with issues/failures. I've recently installed the new iTechWorld 1420CA starter battery to, so it will also be interesting to see how this performs under bonnet, both with the heat concerns and the continuous requirement for high current discharge. I'm really hoping they will last, I wan't to try and keep these big units out of the rear of the vehicle to allow room for other gear 👍

Another rippa vid mate. I'm in the process of doing this and you've provided well researched and presented info. It's clear I'll have to go to a1240d redarc. Not sure I'll put mine under the bonnet though. Cheers Mick

How come the Battery Monitor is set at 120Ah but the usable amps is only 105Ah?
@XploringOz2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, yes it is a 120Ah battery with 96 usable amps, however the Victron Battery monitor takes this into account. The Victron will detect the battery floor and rate/efficiency of discharge. Cheers, Nathan.

Ha Nathan, with you all the way, love my Itech gear, but prior to purchasing the 120X I was advised it is a 105amp hour battery, not 120amp hour. If you look at the spec sheet in this video @ 1629 you'll clearly see Itech do specify at 105 amp hour. The model no. didn't specify the amp rating as I think your presuming. I think this needs clarifying. My 120X has been in since Dec 2021, not long-term but its main benefit I see over our AGM is recovery time, charges so quickly, AGM was slow, on overcast days full recovery was out of the question, but sun up, 120X just gobbles up solar amps so fast, love it to bits.

No mention of cranking amps. Is this irrelevant with lithium batteries?
@XploringOz2 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, yes this is irrelevant for a 'deep cycle' type battery like this one. This is not designed as a cranking battery and therefore isn't provided a CCA rating. iTechWorld do a cranking battery too where the appropriate ratings are provided. Cheers, Nathan.

Good review again Nathan, particularly as you have tackled iTechworld which because of its flood of advertising just turns me off and has me being skeptical of the performance of their products. I will be watching with interest as to how it stands up to reality. I have been looking at another KZbinr Stefan who has been using twin DCS under bonnet and his outcomes are a little confusing as he has change them again after 2 years. Again I'm looking to see how they perform and will be interesting to see how your and his experiences turn out. Whilst he got his at no charge, to purchase the DCS is a greater hit to the hip pocket than your model, so I will definitely be keen to see your outcomes.

Cheers mate. I agree with the advertising, iTechWorld do hit it a little too hard which can turn away potential customers. It will be interesting to see how these different systems hold up over time. I've heard great things about DCS, but it interesting to see he's had to change his over already, that would definitely not be a cost effective solution. Cheers.

@@XploringOz If you look at 'AllOffroad 4x4 Adventures TV' (Stephan Fishers channel) there is a build update for his cruiser where he explains why the batteries were changed, basically DCS had made changes to batteries and offered them to him so he was running the latest batteries DCS had. As best I can tell its actually a 105Ah battery (see the specs), I'm not sure how they get away with this dishonesty..
@Michael_Mears2 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean, now that I've read the web page and the spec sheet. They mention it in the main heading once, but all other references are C20 rate at 105Ah. I'd take it as being 105Ah usable capacity, which could mean 80% DOD to get 4,000 cycles is 84Ah and not 96Ah.
@XploringOz2 жыл бұрын
I've done some testing on this battery since this review and the results would indicate that this battery is a 120A capacity. My capacity test results got a total of 99 usable amps from the battery, this is when the BMS shut the system down at the alleged 20%. 🤷♂️
@TheDavidCollett2 жыл бұрын
@@XploringOz Other manufacturers advertise the actual usable Ah (or even better, Wh). For example I capacity tested my 120Ah (1536Wh) Solarking battery and got 1540Wh before the BMS disconnected it at 10v. Will Prowse does the same with battery after battery on his channel. This may be a decent battery, but it should not be compared to other 120Ah batteries that can *actually* deliver 120Ah!
@XploringOz2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDavidCollett I understand where you are coming from, but this isn’t the industry standard for capacity measurement. Lead acid, calcium, AGM etc all have their “potential” Ah rating, not their usable. My FullRiver AGM is rated at 105A, but only gets 79A usable. Why would we measure lithium batteries any different to what the market has and still is doing for everyone type of battery? It may be what you do and what other YT’s do, but it’s not what the manufacturers do. This is why people like me and Will Prowse do these videos, to compare the actual ratings with the listed specifications.
@TheDavidCollett2 жыл бұрын
@@XploringOz Hi Nathan, I respectfully disagree. The facts are pretty simple, I tested another brand 120Ah battery until it stopped and got 120Ah, you tested the itechworld 120Ah battery and got 100Ah. What am I missing?? I know they state 105Ah usable in the specs, but it is clearly marketed as 120Ah to compete with other 120Ah batteries. That is my issue.
