I would recommend a couple of tracks from his / their second album, which shows a whole other side of Alice Cooper: 'Shoe Salesman' and 'Laughing At Me'. Also a track from a bit later on (1972), 'Gutter Cat', which shows just how talented a bass player Dennis Dunaway really is.

Hi Linda, Bill here. I had just turned 14 and was starting 8th grade. I bought it for this song, but the Album was a revelation. My God, Lawrence Welk was still on TV every night. Banging tunes and so theatrical. It was not my first album but within the first five.

The definitive line - up of the original Alice Cooper group. Even though Alice's solo work was great from mid - '70's to early '80's, this is the best era. Hope you enjoy the rest of the album, then go back a step to the 1971 album, "Love It To Death". Alice Cooper...my rock god !! "Desperado", according to Alice, is loosely based on Jim but it's an amalgamation of the western movie genre characters. not specifically about Jim. Appreciate the great uploads, Lee. Hope you all get well soon.💖

Alice was another band big in Detroit when I was growing up. You got to check out his video done with WABX radio from 1971. It's on YT, Detroit Tubeworks..WABX exemplified the stoner FM radio station with low key djs & doing classic bathroom break tracks like In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida. My brother took this album to test out stereo amps , turntables & speakers at a shop called PECARS Audio in Detroit around '71..cranked it up & got alot of strange looks from the 'audiophiles' there..lol

Frank Zappa signed the Alice Cooper Group to their first record contract, signing them to his then newly created 'Straight Records' through which they released their first albums, Pretties For You in 1969 and Easy Action in 1970. Frank Zappa told Alice Cooper to come audition for his record label at 7:00. Alice Cooper misunderstood and showed up at 7:00AM, which impressed Frank Zappa enough to sign them to a three album deal.

I first saw them in 1971 at the 5th Street Theatre in Cincinnati. The letters in the marquee were 4" high and the Love It To Death album came out the week before. The total attendance was around 400 people and their manager let me into the pit right in front of the stage. Alice posed for me and I took two rolls of film as they did the entire Love It To Death album as if there were thousands there. I still have the pictures and the negatives.

Desperado is one of my favorite Alice Cooper songs. It is superbly written, beautifully orchestrated, and the guitars are so good, just spot on. The original band was so good. And Dennis Dunaway is so damn good at bass it's ridiculous! And I like how, at the beginning of the last chorus of Be My Lover, Alice sounds like Mae West when he says "Oh". Personally I think Desperado is exactly what it seems to be, it's about a Desperado in the old west, a hired gun who would kill you for $20. Alice has a thing for historical villains. Great reaction Lee! Cheers.

Just a few notes from a long time fan. Under My Wheels and Be My Lover are both still staples of Alice's live shows. I'm Eighteen, Schools Out and Billion Dollar Babies are the only songs that are played live more than Under My Wheels. Desperado is actually about Robert Vaugh's character in the movie The Magnificent Seven, however Alice's vocal performance is an homage to Jim Morrison. Morrison and Alice , as I'm given to understand, were pretty close friends. It's also said that the line "I got up this morning and got myself a beer" from the Doors song Roadhouse Blues is a reference to Alice. By then Alice, like Morrison, had become a pretty hard drinker and always started his day with a beer.

Toward the end of Be My Lover, Alice gives his voice the Mae West treatment (if you're not familiar, look up her famous line "Come on up and see me sometime") - which is just one of countless Easter Eggs he buries in his songs.

I consider Love It To Death and Killer my favorite 2 albums of theirs. Saw them do the songs and act live. As good live as anything on record. Note: at the end of Be My Lover, the last time Alice sings Oh Baby! He gives the Oh a take on the voice of Mae West the sassy but delightful early film star. I sing and play guitar cover songs for free at open mics and community events. These Alice Cooper tracks are on my playlist. I always mention the writers and original artists, I figure my cover is my tribute to them so it's fair use. 73 and still rockin' in Maine.

I knew nothing about Alice Cooper before starting college in the fall of 71. I had a dorm roommate who played the recently released Love It to Death album for me. Coincidentally, the big track was I'm Eighteen and so was I at the time. I was shocked how much I loved it... previously feeling I wouldn't like it by pre-judging the band's look and name alone. A couple of months later came Killer. Now, I was hooked. What surprised me most about AC was the band's excellent musicianship. Even better than LITD. Production at top level. From there came School's Out and Billion Dollar Babies. All 4 of those albums are quite good and each uniquely creative.

"You Drive Me Nervous" is a bit iconic. Before their breakout album, Love It to Death, they released a self-titled album with some interesting stuff on it. Before that was their first album, Pretties For You, with a decidedly experimental edge to it--a good listen, though.

Anyone else notice this is most definitely a remix? I've heard these songs hundreds of times over the years and the mix on this is different from what I've ever heard before. Just an observation. Great memories of listening to this album back in the spring and summer of 72. Sometimes there are back to back songs on albums that you feel go together, and for me Halo Of Flies and Desperado go together. They're my two favorite songs by Alice and I usually listened to this whole album side. Desperado is such a cool song, it has a certain vibe to it that I can't really describe. Killer is probably my favorite Alice album, followed closely by Love It To Death and BIllion Dollar Babies. Our mom hid this album on us in the summer of 72, I think 'Dead Babies' was a bit much for her. :)

If you like Dennis Dunaway's bass, you might love the album School's Out. Gutter Cats Vs. The Jets, and Blue Turk are both kind of bass heavy. For Neal Smiths drumming, check out Billion Dollar Babies, the song, off the album with the same name. The drums came first, then they built the rest of the song around them. Of these three, I think Under My Wheels is my favorite.

Alice (Vince Furnier) was dismissed by elitist music critics initially. I think he was "discovered" by Frank Zappa who saw great potential. His gigs incorporated elements of teenage horror flicks from the 50's-60's. He wanted his fans to get a SHOW, not just a concert. He would hang himself onstage and once almost succeeded. The band was great, straight up Detroit rock. Under My Wheels still kicks ass. He had a serious drinking problem (Budweiser). One year he spent 32K on booze. But he got a handle on it
