I think it was Bram Van Splunteren who interviewed John in 1994. I give him a tremendous amount of respect for how he conducted that interview with respect, professionalism, and integrity. At one point, John said that he had a lot of bad things that he could say about various different people and asked the interviewer if he wanted him to go into detail. The interviewer declined and said that it was okay and there was no need and wouldn’t help anyone. In my opinion, the vast number of interviewers would love that opportunity to hear a bunch of dirt being thrown around to stir up drama and controversy. If John had said a whole bunch of deeply personal, offensive, embarrassing, and hurtful things about Anthony- or anyone else in the band, I sincerely believe that it could have burned any chance of John being welcomed back into the band later on. With the state John was in at that moment of time, he likely believed that there was no chance that he would ever even want to go back. That interviewer might have saved RHCP by not wanting to be like a tabloid reporter and maintaining his integrity; even if the other way might be more financially lucrative.

I first heard UTB when it was released in Australia (early '92), and I loved it straight away. It was so different to the Mother's Milk stuff. Of course, like most other teen guitarists, I desperately wanted to be able to play it, which I did a year or 2 later. The ornaments in the verses were really tricky and took me a long time to learn. Fast forward 10 yrs and I'm a guitar teacher and as of 2024 I still get snotty nosed 13, 14, 15 yr olds... and older and older wanting to learn this song. I never ever tire of teaching it, marvelling at how a 20 yr old Frusciante could write such an interesting composition; 2 key changes, unpredictable song direction...blah blah; also Flea and Chad really holding back in favour of restraint, particularly in an era where their playing was generally very unrestrained. And tbh, the lyrics - the paradox of alienation, loneliness etc. None of Mt students ever realise that the song is about some really heavy themes, due to the major-ness of the piece. It's an absolutely flawless piece of songwriting in my humble; all the more so, because it's written from an artists honest lived experience. ❤❤

John, i can't stand that over rated average piece of work. They're just junkies who can't make sense if Rick Rubin s not telling them who s songs to rip off for them to come with finished product. Talk about being percieved as this i colour off the marks kinda band while in reality they just can't make sense, because they don't want to. And add some grammys and some more grams, and repeat. OHM s the only decent and cohesive record, where they sound like an actual force of nature. but nope, Frusciante s in the middle of phucking things up because fans can't get off his dick and see the reality.
