My dad worked for years at a bank and he said that the best way to avoid bad ATMs is to not use them if you suspect the tinyest thing. Normally those are more wobbly, the keyboard and card slot feel out of place, and other things.

If you always use a credit card especially if it’s a major credit card company you’ll be completely fine. Since most of them make it extremely easy to dispute and instantly lock the money from the disputed transaction from having to be paid, and stop charging any interest until it’s solved.

In Singapore all atm number pads come by default with a diffused glass that covers the pad. You need to lift it a bit and insert your hand inside and type the pin. So it hinders cameras, and it's very bulky that you can't slap a decoy pad over unless you physically saw the glass panel out

I've rubbed a big magnet over the stripe on my card because its so rarely used in my country. In fact, the first time I used the stripe was in a gift shop in York, where the cashier literally snatched my card off of me and started hurriedly rubbing the card down the side of the machine multiple times. It didn't work because of the aforementioned magnet abuse, and I'm kind of glad it didn't because they just seemed to be acting really weird and frantic with my card.

The whole time I’ve lived here in the US I have never used the magnetic stripe at all anywhere. Most scanners won’t even let you use a magnetic stripe at all if you have a chip card. Learned that frustratingly when I scratched up and damaged the chip on my card once.

That's a cool gadget! I wonder if the atm would try to eat it though. A lot of them pull the card all the way into an internal chamber and lock on to them. I hope that wouldn't break it in half or anything. The machine might need to see a valid signal first before it "ingests" the card, because if you put the card in the wrong way it often just doesn't go in all the way. I'd like to see someone experiment with that. It would be a nice accessory to carry around to check before you swipe.

I served five years. For credit card debit card fraud and wire fraud. Getting caught was the best thing that happened to me. Now, I have a very good job. Working to protect people. From this type of thing. Even back when I was doing it. We had skimmers. That automatically sent us the data. 4G cellular service. But those units we had then were easily findable Once. The gas pump was opened up. The skimmer was in the inside but it was obvious. Once you opened it up, So, you had limited time...

i've noticed recently that in Spanish ATM machines you can use contactless to withdraw cash. instead of inserting then card you put it next to the contactless reader and then insert the pin. The negates inserting you card into anything.

Black strip stays the same where as the chip randomises so if you do not ever use the magnetic strip at all you could just try and scramble it with a magnet so its unreadable (apart from old ATM's you should not notice a difference)

@@nobodynoone2500 Yahh chip, this is why ATMs should switch to NFC. While chip is way more secure, it can still be cracked. NFC however is even better than chip, than chip is to the stripe. Currently NFC is uncrackable, but barely supported in stores and not at all by ATMs, and not all cards.

those thin card readers are sometimes badly configured and you'll be able to spot them through Bluetooth. The reason is that the card skimmers do not pull out the entire thing to get the skimmed card numbers, they use a Bluetooth app to get it.

The thing is even though it’s not used primarily any more they still make the cards with the magnetic strike regardless if it’s a newer card or not. Mostly criminals will try the chip a few times and when that doesn’t work it allows you to use the magnetic strike they need to change security A lot and fast before it gets worse for us regular citizens. They also create anti skimmer atm I serte to break these type of skimmers and detect if inserted these are the best bet at the moment pertaining to this threat.

At least in my bank, I could set up the limits to contactless payments. So, if the card gets stolen (and they don't have a PIN) then the worst that could happen is probably only a lost lunch. There's still a question of online payments and the magnetic stripe...

Why not just use a secondary online account to move money from? That's what I have. There is no money on the card linked to the main account until I move them over right before payment. Obviously have to be within the same bank, I only have ever had one bank and profile on it, so I don't know if other banks in Sweden or outside Sweden can work the same way. I would never have any money on the card-linked account, that would be a much bigger risk. But I know that for Sweden, there aren't much in the way of cash anymore, so we have nothing to pull out. The only goal of cash is to be able to count it, it has no value on its own, it's just paper. Digital money can be counted automatically, we still have ATMs but cash serve little use. It may be safer, presumably being able to track money automatically makes it safer, but I don't know how it all works and they aren't going to tell you because then you'd be given a set of instructions on how to fool it if you're seeking to do such a thing. Cash is just paper, so unless you can track that money precisely, it serves thieves more than it servers everyone else. I've only ever heard about cash being better..by criminals or wannabe criminals. Like in rap songs, where they may make fun of the "plastic" and that they have "paper". Even though it has no value on its own and if a society suddenly gets rid of the paper part, all that cash is valueless in that society. Just like if they got rid of the plastic part, or both if there is a new third one introduced. To be fair, I've not heard about either side anywhere else. Not a topic that gets a lot of attention, it just exists in the background of everyone's lives.

NFC is barely supported, it's nowhere near as supported as chip is now. Once it's as abundant as chip, swiping/strips will go away. NFC is barely supported at any shops I go to, and not a single ATM I've encountered supports NFC, just chip.

Contactless payments usually have limits, so if someone robs your card and tries to buy something too expensive, it will require the password. Same if someone tries to put a payment terminal close to your card (I mean, they would need to register the terminal first, which I doubt would be easy 😂).

It’s so weird because where I’m from in America we almost exclusively use chip. At gas stations it’s chip and zip (the postal zip code attached to the address the card is registered to). Where I work the swipe on our terminal is only used if the card’s chip fails. If you have a debit card, it’s chip and pin. Most places I go also accept tap pay. Except at my job where I have to tell at least 1 customer a day to stop tapping their card because we can’t accept tap pay.

If you don't specifically need a magnetic stripe, you should destroy it with a strong magnet. It still leaves the chip intact. And if you really are in need of the said feature, you should make a new account just for that one card where you then transfer the money from other accounts as needed. The account used for mag stripe card should also let you see the logs when it has been accessed. That way you can see if your card is compromised even if the account had no money to steal from to begin with. That is very small price to 100% protect yourself from the skimmer attacks. It really becomes cumbersome only in countries where no other ways exists but even then I think it's worth it.

I really like this suggestion of gated funds. I believe it's best to have a card that you never use for any direct purchases, from which you transfer funds to another card or account. The original card can be immediately locked if there's somehow a breach in security, and using only that card to transfer funds to secondary cards and accounts means you aren't ever attaching your bank account info to anything. I had to cancel one of my cards not that long ago when someone across the other side of the country tried to use it for a big purchase and then going forward, I decided that gating my funds was appropriate.

I don't want to turn this political or anything but people like to talk about how capitalism drives innovation, meanwhile we're all still using "ancient" technology such as this, because it costs money to switch to a new system, so why switch if the old system still (technically) works, plus an older smaller store probably can't afford to waste money like that, so you'll find several places that use a chip or phone payments, mostly big or newly built stores, but it's still not exactly common around here in the south.

@@vgamesx1 Capitalism drives currency to whoever can exploit the most. Regulated capitalism is better, but it's not a great system. There may be better systems, but you see the slow change within the current system..An entirely new system could take even longer and come with a lot of lower standards of living until it can be introduced. Or you get something like an attempt at a switch, but in the transitional period someone just gets power-hungry and it never happens. I guess the system driven by that power-hungry group could still be better, but it's unlikely as the system they were trying to transition to would've already been an improvement, more likely it will be a system benefiting the power-hungry group. I believe that was what the USSR would've come to, a transition to communism but it never happened and some other system took place by a power-hungry group. In unwritten history, it's probably happened many times. Impossible to choose the correct group to make the transition when you can't read minds. For the U.S. the issue is also that they love the rich and the ability to get rich, by presumably exploiting others like the most richest men have no doubt done to get to where they are. So introducing a system without exploitation would mean you can't get rich like that and that's probably one of the prime ways to get rich under regulated capitalism. If you can actually get around the power-hungry group that would no doubt want to take over in the transitional period to benefit themselves. I assume for the U.S., power-hungry groups are already in charge..So unless you off them, no transition will ever take place. Generational differences still occur and eventually "old men" will be those that were once the young "I hate the rich" people. Now they may be the old "I hate the rich" people and so change can take place because the exploitative generations are dead. But that also takes a long time..Decades. Or it will just continue, because who likes change and those that don't want to be exploitative may not be the ones that want to be politicians and such. Not EVERYONE in a generation will fall under the same "hate the rich" mindset, so those that don't will presumably be the ones that become politicians and the cycle continues. Again, can't vote for the correct group to make the improvements, because you can't read minds and if one person could, no one else can so they can't know that person is speaking the truth about these supposed liars. I don't get why you need so much money in the first place..The whole point of living isn't to work, is it? It does feel like that from how some humans talk about life. I'd think it's about passing time doing stuff you enjoy, so if you don't enjoy working you shouldn't be working. But apparently not. Of course most sane humans understand not everything you enjoy is what you should be allowed to enjoy. Torturing others, for example. I would list others, but no doubt the comment would be removed. Rules like we have now would still take place. Presumably you could make a lot more rules in capitalism, so exploitation isn't a possibility. But how would that happen when the system is run by people that want exploitation, cheapest labor for the cheapest prices. I wonder what sort of system they have in the works for when robots take over most jobs, if power-hungry individuals are in charge, I am guessing everyone else isn't going to be living under a benefiting system. Probably a future civil war waiting to happen. I'm not in the loop about all the anti-politics stuff, so I don't know about that stuff. That seems like a U.S. thing, "No politics" rules. I've asked people when I've been in Discord servers about it and they can't give an answer, because presumably it's based on preference of what sort of politics they don't want. Everything else is counted as unpolitical and is allowed, even if it is political. It's like "incel", from what I've gathered. It's just anyone you dislike or don't want to hear from. The internet has a way of diluting meanings until you end up with meaningless words. Don't like black wallpapers on your kitchen wall? Racism. That sort of dilution. Don't like white wallpapers on your kitchen wall? That's fine, can't be racist against whites, even though it's not even about humans. We're all wallists, black wallpapers suit better for kitchens due to potential spills and also because you may want to see in there and eat. White wallpapers should amplify the brightness in the room and it may be easier to see spills, if you ever end up spilling on the wall while eating. I don't eat in the kitchen, but the same is true for any room you eat in. If the wallpaper tolerates water, maybe white wallpaper is better. See it quickly, get rid of it quickly. Now it's a clean wallpaper again.

@@Herkan97 The best system I've seen is a greater mix of multiple systems where it fits, kinda like in the EU, so you still have your capitalism, but it's slightly better regulated and has stronger consumer protections, then you have some socialism aspects such as universal healthcare which splits the cost between everyone and simply makes it cheaper and more available for everyone, but in the US we tend to half-arse everything. You do make some good points though like "it will just continue, because who likes change and those that don't want to be exploitative may not be the ones that want to be politicians and such" very true, I have zero desire to be a public figure or have people hate me because I want to push for better living conditions, I have little to hold me here and therefore would much rather simply pack up and move than try to fix the place I currently live, but that isn't such an easy choice for many other people. Although the far bigger issue is corruption, even if you DO get actively involved, politician or not, good luck actually changing much of anything, even more so when any large company can just buy teams of lobbyists or lawyers to whittle your rights away, I mean just look at the state of right to repair, Louis Rossmann has been pushing it for 10 years now and has barely moved the needle, for the most part he's just kept attempts to make things even harder to repair at bay and only very recently finally got one win, it certainly makes you feel kinda hopeless to make any meaningful change unless you're rich or somebody with a massive influence like MrBeast.

one thing I do that anyone can do is go beyond 4 digits for the pin and shield. if you are at a scummy ATM, fake push some of the numbers as well

To avoid ATM fraud, I just use PAYG debit cards and top them up when I need to spend money. Takes a few seconds to do before I make a withdrawal, but it's a lot less effort than trying to get your money back later.

gas pump skimmers are now using ESP32 skimmers that are plugged into the chip reader and keypad so it can sniff the data as it is read from the card and input from the keypad. then all you have to do is connect to it by Bluetooth to download the data.

5:07 That excerpt is misleading. While most terminals here in Japan *do have* magnetic strip readers, they also include PIN readers. I haven't had my card read magnetically in years.

6:10 the only thing I notice that could indicate a keypad is fake is the fake one doesn’t have raised symbols on the buttons. The legit ones have the raised buttons as a way for blind people to know what they are pushing.
