In making reference to this, the man is claiming that Bashar was never noble and never a lion, but rather, has always been an ignoble savage as both his true family name had suggested and his actions throughout his brutal authoritarian rule had proven.

As a Syrian, I appreciate shedding light on this aspect of my country’s suffering. However, it’s important to recognize that the root cause of all this destruction and chaos is the Assad regime, which devastated Syria to serve its own interests and secure its grip on power. Thankfully, that regime has been overthrown, but its catastrophic legacy continues to impact Syrians. Topics like this remind us of the enormous challenges we face in rebuilding our country and eradicating the corruption and criminal activities that thrived under its rule. Our hope as Syrians is that highlighting these issues will contribute to international and local efforts to rebuild and create a better future.

I am British but have been living in Turkey for many years. About seven years ago, while travelling on a bus, I noticed a family sitting opposite me: a mother, a father, and their two little girls, who appeared to be around four and seven years old. The girls were lively and bright, practising their English together. I complimented their efforts, and they responded with laughter and enthusiasm, seizing the opportunity to ask me questions in English to further their practice. Striking up a conversation with their parents, I learned more about their story. They were Syrian refugees, forced to flee their homeland to escape the Assad regime. The father explained with quiet intensity that he had been critical of Assad in the past, a stance that left him no choice but to leave Syria for the safety of his family. Returning, he said, would likely mean death for him and a life of destitution-or worse-for his two daughters. His words, though spoken calmly, carried the weight of profound pain and uncertainty. Over the past month, I’ve found myself thinking about that family often. I wonder where they are now, whether they managed to find stability, and if they’ve been able to return to Syria. More than anything, I hope they are safe, happy, and able to live in peace-a peace they so deeply deserved but were cruelly denied when I met them.
