Underdog: Anne Brontë And Her Sisters. RSL Books+ Series.

Bringing the overshadowed Brontë sister centre-stage, Sarah Gordon’s play, Underdog: The Other Other Brontë, is a new co-production by Northern Stage, directed by Natalie Ibu and opening at The National Theatre in late March.
After a life-long fascination with Emily Brontë, chronicled in her first book, How To Be A Heroine, Samantha Ellis realised there was more to explore, leading her to write a biography; Take Courage: Anne Brontë and The Art of Life.
Join the two playwrights as they share their explorations of sisters, sisterhood and a remarkable overlooked writer.
Chairing the discussion is Polly Teale, Arts Psychotherapist and former Artistic Director of Shared Experience Theatre Company, whose ground-breaking productions include the award-winning trilogy: Brontë; Jane Eyre and After Mrs Rochester (winner Best Director Evening Standard Awards, and Time Out Best West End Production).
Sarah Gordon is a playwright and screenwriter. In 2020 she won the Nick Darke Award for Underdog, which is now being produced by Northern Stage. Previously Sarah’s theatre work has been longlisted and shortlisted for The Women’s Prize for Playwriting, The Bruntwood Award, Theatre Fest West and the Old Vic 12. She is currently developing several original series.
Samantha Ellis is the author of How to be a Heroine, and Take Courage: Anne Brontë and the Art of Life (both published by Chatto & Windus) and her plays include Cling to me Like Ivy and How to Date a Feminist (published by Nick Hern Books). She is writing her third book for Chatto, about the endangered language Judeo-Iraqi Arabic. She also wrote the introduction to Vintage Books’s edition of Agnes Grey.
