A number of questions have been raised on what we can do under a floor that is not able to breath or ventilate itself properly.
Here we look at a mechanical ventilation system.

Hey mate, fantastic series, thanks! I’m deep down the rabbit hole of research as we have opened up some of the sagging bedroom floor in our 100year old cavity brick home. We have had professional rising damp repairs above floor level which has made a big difference, however we can see the joists have rotted over time where they meet the masonry. I can see plenty of weep holes and vents outside. Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems that vents weren’t originally placed in the inside cavity only the outside as this area was once considered ‘water tight’ before the original damp course disintegrated. I have seen a video where homeowners have used powered fan ventilation and due to drying out the subfloor excessively, it accelerated the rate that ‘new’ moisture moved up the masonry from the ground, and the salt damage then turned the mortar to dust. Am I best to accept *some* moisture as long as it’s controlled above floor? Would passive vent holes through to the internal cavity be a good compromise? Thanks again. I’m really enjoying this channel :) sorry for the long message!

Hello Missgracie91, Mechanical ventilation is a great option, this is mainly due to the fact that more and more homes & apartments are built to close that it reduces that chances of air flow under the floors or through the roof areas. Timbers rotting in the old homes took a very long home due to the fact the homes timbers were well treated and the trees much older, these days the trees are very young and this creates soft cambium (timber fibre) & it will rot away much faster Please support our channel at www.patreon.com/beowulfbuilders #stayawesome joe joe
